Re: 2020 Recruiting
An internet basketball forum is linked below in which it is suggested that Cochrane may have been headed to Duke prior to their hiring a new coach and the coach pulling an offer? If true, this might explain the great delay in Cochrane's commitment to the U from the time she entered the transfer portal in early April.
Of note is the discussion of Cochrane's performance against the USA National Team, apparently U17, in which there is a suggestion that Cochrane outplayed the USA center. Hmmn?
Regardless, this is further indication that the Pilots have landed a high quality recruit, if that was not already apparent. Cochrane's defense was stressed by coach Meek in his comments. Will be fun to see her on the court.

Re: 2020 Recruiting
So, just as a hypothetical, if a freshman basketball player was scheduled to redshirt this year but plays, would she qualify for the pandemic ‘free’ extra year of eligibility allowed for the fall sports?
I know it was discussed at the last NACB meeting some weeks ago, but I don’t know it it made it through the ncaa.
With what will certainly be a curtailed season, it seems logical.
Asking for a friend.

Tell your "friend," no!
However, if this coming season is also cut short due to the virus, then the answer is likely yes.
Remember, basketball may traditionally begin in the fall, but it is considered a winter sport!!

Re: 2020 Recruiting
Nice informative note regarding Emme Shearer, who presumably is now on campus.

Are the Aussie ladies and our New Zealander on campus enjoying campus life and eager for the season to begin . . .?

Looks like my friend won’t have to redshirt after all.

A great little profile piece. Though I just shared a laugh with the reporter over messages, giving him the heads up that at the start where he says how Aussie the program is and looks at the flag, its the NZ flag not the Aussie one

I laughed immediately at this as well! My apologies for our vexillological ignorance. Not too many of us Americans know the differences in placement, number, shape, and color of the stars.
It's probably a miracle most of us can pick out our own flag from Malaysia or Liberia.

Re: 2020 Recruiting
Portland is the only D1 women's basketball program in either Oregon or Washington with no players in the transfer portal to date. Maybe that will change. The reasons: perhaps stubbornness of our players, cohesion of our team and enjoyment of the experience overall, the uncertainty of transfer and finally perhaps the relative youth of the players returning. Good for the ladies. Looking forward to next year's squad and the incoming additions, including importantly our redshirts.
Go Pilots.

The confident and personable Melika Samia appears on a podcast, and relates her goals on coming to Portland, which include starting as a freshman.

Re: 2020 Recruiting
As some will recall, the McCliment-Call twins were Mike Meek's first recruits not connected to the Cheryl Sorenson the era.
After just one year at UP Tyler transferred to Stephen F. Austin while Jacksen remained at UP but was no longer a member of the basketball team.
Now, Tyler is transferring to the University of Idaho for her graduate/covid year and Jacksen will graduate from UP next month, freeing up the WBB scholarship assigned to her these past four years.

In the new world of players apparently being free to come and go as they please, Tyler Mccliment Call did not sign with Idaho, which she describes as her "last stop" in the linked article, but instead signed with those notorius poachers the Montana Grizzlies. She will join ex PSU star Esmeralda Morales there. BTW, Idaho is McCliment-Call's home state.

Unless she too has changed schools again, I believe Morales is still headed to Montana St.wrv wrote:In the new world of players apparently being free to come and go as they please, Tyler Mccliment Call did not sign with Idaho, which she describes as her "last stop" in the linked article, but instead signed with those notorius poachers the Montana Grizzlies.
