To the surprise of very few (maybe only that it was midseason), Jay John got the sack today:

Assistant Kevin Mouton will take over for now. Looks like De Carolis didn't want to wait until the end of the year.

Amazing to have so many West Coast coaches pushed out mid season. Wow.

Will De Carolis go after Bennett at SMC?! I think he would be a great match for the Beavs...

Bennett would certainly make more sense than Gary Payton, Jerry Tarkanian, or a dozen other names being tossed around the OregonLive board now Rolling Eyes Bennett has done a great job with the SMC program and OSU ought to at least make a serious effort to get him.

I see Mouton's first act was to kick C.J. Giles off the team.

I saw an interview with Mouton. He was talking hard nosed.

The team WILL learn to set picks, etc, or they won't play.....

I think they will go after a big name - one with a national reputation and respect. At least that seems to be what De Carolis is saying. Is Bennett a coach with such a reputation?

He may well be the perfect coach for the Beavs, but De Carolis sounds pretty determined to land a big time coach. The D1 head coaching experience is a plus for Bennett. A coach with previous college head coaching experience seems to be a must, according to what the athletic director has been saying.

Should be interesting to follow the search and hire. Cool

It will be interesting... and I read somewhere on the SMC board that Bennett has come right out and said that he is not interested in the OSU job. I was not able to find the direct quote... but I can see how moving to OSU from SMC, at least in the short term, is not a step up.

I would assume that OSU will go after a coach in a similar way to what Wazzu did, with Dick (and son Tony) Bennett... that was a great situation for the Cougs, and look how quickly they turned things around.

I would think that OSU would go after a coach who would be there for a couple years, right the ship, and have the heir apparent all lined up. (Maybe like an Eddie Sutton/USF type situation, but on a longer term basis with the next coach lined up?).

This will indeed be interesting to see who they get, after so openly saying they want a big name coach...

Well, if you are talking money, the OSU job should be a pretty big step up.
Competing in the PAC 10 will require a higher salary for both coaches and assistants, recruiting budget, endorsement possibilities, etc.

OSU could put a bigger package together, and they are going to have to to get a top coach with a proven track record.

Nice article by John Canzano about head-hunting firms and coaching searches:

Calls out the Pump brothers big-time, and deservedly so. One way or another, the NCAA is going to have to look into those guys.

If OSU doesn't at least make a serious push for Bennett, they're making a huge mistake. Saint Mary's had two wins the season before he arrived. I think he'd be a great fit for Corvallis.
