Off-Season Player Updates
Thought I'd start a new thread for this topic.
As already discussed elsewhere and been assumed ever since Malcolm went through the Senior Night ceremony with a year of eligibility remaining, he is officially in the transfer portal.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Malcolm, since Franklin did the same thing, and ended up not playing anywhere.
Verbal commits also shows Hugh Hogland in the portal as of 3/10/20, going to UCD as already discussed.
Verbal commits does not show Cody Collingsworth in the portal yet.

Re: Off-Season Player Updates
With the news that Coach Porter is staying, now the focus turns to players. We know Isaiah and Lamar are out of eligibility, Malcolm, Hugh and Cody are leaving. Will any other players enter the portal?
I count eight players on the roster who might contribute next year: Seniors JoJo, Quincy, D and Jacob; Juniors Theo, Taki and Josh; Sophomore Chase. I do not know if Miles Turner or Wyatt Watson can contribute or if they are practice players. We have one freshman committed to a NLI, Zac Triplett from Australia. We can hope he'll contribute as much as our Australian women did this year.
So here are some questions:
Can Diabate become more efficient in the low post?
How much more growth in skills development does Theo have?
Can JoJo (32%), Taki (39%) and Jacob (41%) get more consistent from 3P range? They are the only current viable options. We'll see about Zac's game.
What can Josh Phillips provide coming off his redshirt year? We need his beef.
What can Chase improve after a year of experience as a true freshman? How can he compensate for his height limitations?

Did you always kind of wonder who those young ladies in cheerleader outfits standing in the student section were?
Yeah, me too, and frankly I thought it was a little strange...and maybe it is, but they are now a club and having fun!

Thanks, I often wondered about them, great story of spirit and friendships. The unanswered question: where did they get their uniforms?DoubleDipper wrote:Did you always kind of wonder who those young ladies in cheerleader outfits standing in the student section were?

I hope they are given a place out of the stands. Personally, I'd remove a section of courtside seats in front of the student section and put them there, to lead student cheers.
In the conference, some schools have traditional cheer squads with signs and lifts, some have cheerleaders who dance, and some have dance teams who cheer, like UP. I've never seen the point of the lifts (maybe because GU and BYU do it), but having more students cheering and encouraging others to cheer is a good thing.

Re: Off-Season Player Updates
The Pilots now have 5 open scholarships as Theo Akwuba has entered his name in the Transfer Portal...
Sorry to see him go...he's wonderful young man, who with the right coaching, will develop into a really good player, but he's got to do more than just dunks and blocks if he's to fully develop.

Re: Off-Season Player Updates
Chase Adams has released the following statement as a result of his grandmother testing positive for COVID-19 and being hospitalized in critical condition and on a ventilator in Chicago.

I guess Jacob will be a "sit one, play one" guy somewhere?
What's that, six scholarships open now? Good lord.

Yeah, that or transfer to a D2 school somewhere in Southern California near his home and his girlfriend.Dean Murdoch wrote:I guess Jacob will be a "sit one, play one" guy somewhere?
Yup, there are now six open scholarships, and four big men have left the team in the last two months: Collinsworth, Hogland, Akwuba, and now Tryon.Dean Murdoch wrote:What's that, six scholarships open now? Good lord.
It would seem that fans of Pilots basketball are not the only ones who are upset that Porter is returning next season.

All about out of bigs. Was part of the discussion with Porter staying that he can hold the team together for next year?

D2, really?
That is a heck of a good D2 player if he ends up there.

You're correct, I think he's the best player UP has lost so far...Dean Murdoch wrote:That is a heck of a good D2 player if he ends up there.
I suppose he could end up playing for his girlfriend's dad, but that could be awkward, and I don't know the WCC's rules on transferring within the conference under the new rules.

His father came down with a cough, and though he hasn’t been tested for COVID-19, he is quarantined in a room by himself. The rest of the family, who may have been exposed to the virus, are not allowed to go outside. They spend their day wearing masks and gloves and keeping their distance from one another.
“It’s like a movie around here,” Adams said.
Worse, Adams’ grandfather, Ralph Walker, died Sunday of heart failure. He lives about 10 minutes from the Adams’ home.

Re: Off-Season Player Updates
This seems less important after seeing what Chase's family is going through but I'll post it anyway.
https://pamplinmedia.com/pt/12-sports/460561-374531-porter-on-pilots-struggles-i-know-its-not-a-permanent-situation-
The article says "up to five scholarships available" but I believe 13 scholarships minus seven (six returners & Triplett) equal six current open slots? So either a math error on someone's part (maybe me) or there's a commit we don't yet know about.

Re: Off-Season Player Updates
Your math is correct. Even though the article mentions Collinsworth, he apparently never requested that his name be entered in the transfer portal (he simply left UP and enrolled at a JUCO), and all the websites that track such things still show him on the Pilots' roster.Dean Murdoch wrote:The article says "up to five scholarships available" but I believe 13 scholarships minus seven (six returners & Triplett) equal six current open slots? Seniors:
1)Diabate
2)Walker
3)Ferebee
Junior:
4)Fahrensohn (RS)
Sophomores
5)Phillips (RS)
6)Adams
Freshman
7)Triplett
I'm not going to speculate who else might leave, but it's certainly a possibility...

Re: Off-Season Player Updates
A couple of says ago, but an update nonetheless...
The events of this past Sunday have tested the Adams’ family. As Chase’s mother screamed about her father being gone, his little sister also became distressed. Chase’s dad, Tony, who was previously isolated in his room after exhibiting a dry cough, came out to see what was happening. He was worried the news was about his mother in the hospital. When he heard Walker had died, he collapsed on the stairs as he found out the news.
https://www.upbeacon.com/article/2020/04/chase-adams-covid-19-portland-pilots-basketball-coronavirusThe same day that Walker died, the Adams’ family received a call from the hospital about Juanita, with the doctors telling them that her organs were failing and that it was unlikely that she would make it through the night. But to the Adams’ family’s surprise, she made it through and is still battling as of Tuesday.

If this virus crisis hasn't hit us all personally in some way yet, it likely will.
Chase has now lost his grandfather and grandmother in the last five days...and he still mourns the loss of his older brother six years ago from a seizure.
