Re: 2020-21 Schedule
Talking to a staffer last week, I was told the first WCC game will likely be an early evening game on New Year's Eve...a Thursday.
I just hope the Pilots are on the road...

If there's any day that shouldn't have an early start it's new years Eve. If anything it's the perfect day for a later than usual start.

As many know, Coach Eric Reveno's idea of allowing all NCAA athletes the day off on Election Day, November 3, is getting a great deal of traction throughout the country...
Reveno's interview begins at the 24:30 mark and ends at 45:15.

Eastern Washington got a 2-for-1 with Washington State starting this year in Cheney.
In this environment with budgets stretched to the maximum, you'd think it would be a given for the Pilots to get at least one of Oregon or Oregon State back on the schedule with a similar deal....if it wasn't for the Pilots being a 300-ish ranked team for the past four years.

Re: 2020-21 Schedule
Interesting perspective on the 16 game WCC schedule and more from LMU Lions Roar:
http://lmulionsroar.com/?p=4567&utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=wcc-releases-conference-schedule
Despite our disparaging of GU over last year's non-conference schedule, it would appear they are making up for it this coming season...here's what we know:
USC (Phil Knight Invitational - BYU vs. Oregon is apparently the other half of this double-header on November 17th in the Moda Center)
Texas Tech (Phoenix)
Tennessee (Jimmy V Classic)
At Texas
Arizona
Washington
Orlando Invitational (3 games --- field includes Michigan State, Auburn, Saint Louis, Xavier, Belmont, Boise State, Siena)
GU will also play "lesser" teams before WCC play begins (and after ), but wow, that's a helluva nice schedule.

Re: 2020-21 Schedule
Re lionsroar's analysis, I think the deciding factor for giving UP the GU home game is GU fan attendance opportunity. More GU fans in the NW than in LA. And UP has plenty of available seats.

That sounds right...up7587 wrote:Re lionsroar's analysis, I think the deciding factor for giving UP the GU home game is GU fan attendance opportunity. More GU fans in the NW than in LA. And UP has plenty of available seats.
There may be a number of GU fans/alums in the LA area, but GU will be at PU and USD during the season, and the game at UP is always raucous, and as up7587 intimated, tickets are relatively easy to get.
With both BYU and GU playing in Portland on November 17 against much higher-caliber opponents, there may not be quite the clamor to see each team play UP as there might have been, but the GU game will still be close to a sellout, especially if GU is #1, and the BYU game will still have the usual high number of annoying fans in blue and white...
I learned early-on that BYU and GU both have a large following of fans that are not alums...GU because they are winners, and BYU because of their religious following.

Sure, they're not the Tar Heels (they are Eagles), but they did win the MEAC championship last season by going 13-3 in league play and return most of their roster.
Sorry, still haven't heard more about UP's schedule beyond what has already been posted...

Re: 2020-21 Schedule
Apparently, the decision as to which team plays where during the WCC season is not that subjective…and has nothing to do with which school can attract the most fans for the GU game.up7587 wrote:Re lionsroar's analysis, I think the deciding factor for giving UP the GU home game is GU fan attendance opportunity. From recent comments by LMU Athletic Director, Craig Pintens, the reason GU will play at UP is because the WCC has predetermined that under the 16 game schedule, the #1 ranked team in the WCC will play the #10 ranked team on the road…and of course UP is #10.
The WCC formula for ranking each team in the conference consists of three elements and is heavily weighted toward the 2018-19 and 2019-20 NET rankings. The formula also includes this past season’s WCC Tournament seedings, and the very subjective, but lightly weighted, spring survey in which the 10 head coaches guess which team will finish where in the standings.
Interesting too, was Pinten’s comment that LMU will lose approximately 30% of its men’s basketball revenue by not hosting GU this coming season…and it is probably no coincidence that LMU supports returning to the 18-game schedule.

Re: 2020-21 Schedule
Not only does today, July 10, mark exactly 4 months since the Pilots last won a basketball game...it was the Women beating USD for the WCC Championship on March 10 (the men last won a game on January 4), but it also means there are exactly 4 more months until the first official game of the basketball season on November 10...maybe.
From a recent poll of 250 men’s D1 basketball head coaches by writer Jeff Goodman:
- 42 percent “Still try and play season normal.”
- 32 percent “Move to Jan., play both league & non-league games.
- 24 percent “Move to Jan. and only play league games.
- 2 percent “Cancel the Season.”
And word is some college basketball programs are attempting to get out of early non-conference games in states that are currently experiencing high cases of coronavirus.
We already know the Ivy League has canceled all athletic competition until 2021 and that football conferences are strongly considering canceling all games that are not league games, but it's anyone's guess at this point what will happen unless 100% of the people able to wear a mask, wear one, and everyone gives themselves plenty of distance from others.
It takes only one positive COVID-19 test on a team to totally disrupt the schedule...

Re: 2020-21 Schedule
The JUCOs (NJCAA) are voting on this hoops proposal today:
• Practice allowed starting Jan. 11.
• Competition allowed starting Jan. 22.
• Max of 22 games
• All regular season/region/ district championships completed by April 10, 2021.
• Championships start April 19, 2021.
Could it be the model for the NCAA?

Tell you what, they've got snus banned up here at the ballparks. As soon as that's lifted, then I'll start feeling better about the prospects of hoops in 2021. Until then I think it's gonna be tough even to get it going for January.

I think there's about a 1/3 chance of getting it going in January. If I had to bet, we're not going to see college hoops until October 2021.

As I recall, snus is now banned in all the minor leagues and for anyone coming into MLB starting in 2017...regardless, under the COVID-19 rules, there will be no spitting allowed...and that might be kind of tough to swallow, for some.Dean Murdoch wrote:Tell you what, they've got snus banned up here at the ballparks. I too am skeptical there will be basketball unless everyone finally wakes up to mask wearing and tactically distancing...if that happens now, I'm optimistic we'll see at least a partial season.Snus Junction wrote:I wish it mattered because I dont see basketball in 2020-2021. If Covid was as bad as reported, Norwegian Cruise Lines wouldnt be up 18% today. Always follow the money.
Covid is real, just not as bad as being reported.
I love this forum, the people in this forum and never ever want to bring politics here because this is a great place for us to all come and congregate/hide from the rest of world/share passion. Its tough for me to keep my mouth shut though as I watch our country being fear-mongered to death by greedy elitests. The whole thing has been way overblown, used as a political ploy to derail tbe Trump train and will miraculously disappear after the election.
Im a country bumpkin but am tied into some of the most intelligent people in the state who have researched facts and ALL of them report the same findings...Skewed reporting/BS.

What is being reported, as of 2:23pm on July 15, is that 3.48M people have been infected and 138,000 have died in the United States. According to Kevin, those numbers are "skewed reporting/BS."Kevin wrote:Covid is real, just not as bad as being reported.

I'm curious to know what the actual unskewed, non-BS numbers are. Which of the 138,000 so-called COVID deaths are fake news? Maybe Chase Adams' grandmother is actually still alive?

I did hear some proposals for NCAA tournament expansion (96 or 128) that I think would be interesting if a conference-only schedule is decided upon.

Re: 2020-21 Schedule
The West Coast Conference Presidents' Council announced Thursday morning that the fall sports competition start date for all 10 institutions has been delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The new WCC start date for fall competition will be Thursday, September 24.
This decision includes the traditional fall seasons in men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball.
For now, the men's and women's basketball seasons, scheduled to begin Nov. 10, and considered winter sports by the NCAA, are not impacted by this decision.

Ok, we’ll keep it relevant.
After holding no press conferences on the pandemic since April, our pumpkin headed President cautions us that
“it will get worse before it gets better”
in his newfound concern for the health of Americans.Since this is the basketball forum, Looks like the prospects for a basketball season just got worse. He’s the commmander in Chief, so it’s official.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-53494766
In his defence, he added “or it will disappear”
Thank goodness.
