Re: 2021-2022 Schedule/Season
I think we should bear in mind that "last night's drubbing" was against a D1 team. It is something of a statement about the state of women's basketball here on the bluff.
Fowler and Andrews continue to shine, but there is great talent on this team. Cochrane appears to be a game changer. Burnham is going to impact games. And more . . .
An exciting time for fans of the women's team.

Re: 2021-2022 Schedule/Season
The coming out of Lucy Cochrane continues with a double double and 5 blocked shots. Emme Shearer looks great. Leading scorer tonight. Pilots do not beat Weber State without them. The team's success depends on them in combo with our returning stalwarts Fowwler and Andrews. Looking forward to the coach's daughter season debut
Next one against Stanford will be nearly impossible to win, but this team will make some noise this year.

It was almost painful to watch because of the officiating and numerous reviews at the monitor, but #25 Texas beat #3 Stanford in Palo Alto by being more scrappy on both sides of the ball in the 4th quarter to outscore them 26-16, and win 61-56.wrv wrote:Next one against Stanford will be nearly impossible to win, but this team will make some noise this year.

The defending National Champion Cardinal dropped to #7 in the nation after losing to Texas, and tonight Stanford will have to contend with the Pilots at 7pm in Palo Alto and on the Pac-12 network.wrv wrote:Next one against Stanford will be nearly impossible to win, but this team will make some noise this year.
It is just a quick stop on team's trip to Hawaii for games on Friday and Sunday against Hawaii and Prairie View A&M.
Wonder if any of the Aussie or New Zealand parents will be there?

Re: 2021-2022 Schedule/Season
After a shaky 4 - 18 start, getting to with 10 point of Stanford with 2 minutes to go in the third quarter was a credit to the team, especially as at no time did Stanford go away from their main rotations, only subbing in their bench depth after UP did with a couple minutes left.
The girls will learn alot from the game, both from tightening up passing and silly turnovers against quality teams, as well as the positives of staying focused and continual grit and effort to be able to pull back into games.

Sometimes the Pilots attempt to play so fast they turn the ball over, and tonight turnovers were a big part of their loss to Stanford. Gritty, pressing defense and a fast offense is UP's style and they are good at it...but tonight they were up against the defending National Champion Cardinal.Adam wrote:The girls will learn alot from the game, both from tightening up passing and silly turnovers against quality teams, as well as the positives of staying focused and continual grit and effort to be able to pull back into games.
No one expected the Pilots to win, and they didn’t, but they shot 49% from the field and were 10-12 from the stipe, but Stanford outscored them 22-2 on second chance points and the Pilots' 32 turnovers led to 30 points for the Cardinal.
Stanford also shot 49%, but always seemed to have the ball and took 20 more shots than did the Pilots.
Haylee, Alex, and Lucy played pretty well (although Haylee had 8 turnovers), and Maisie played 30 minutes off the bench with 12 points, but Stanford was just too good in their 77-55 victory.
Next up, Hawaii at 9pm PST on Friday in Honolulu.

Re: 2021-2022 Schedule/Season
Just a few more random thoughts about the Stanford game after watching the replay on tape:
The game was closer than the score would indicate. The Pilot were within 10 in the 3rd before Stanford's elite players stepped up their game and wore down their smaller opponent.
UP now has four redshirting players, including the two walk-ons, and all four were with the team...I am hoping that means they will all be rewarded for their work by accompanying the team to Hawaii.
UP's road uniforms appear to be the same great look sported by the men at ASU...nice!
Despite the score, UP played well. The women should have confidence in what they are being taught by the staff and what they are doing on the court. Picked to come in 5th in the WCC, they looked better than that against the Cardinal. Coach Meek has the team going in the right direction.

New word to me too. I initially thought it a typo. But then I am not familiar with aussie slang/dialect, maybe "now that's a knife."

Yeah, tied at the end of the 3rd quarter, the Pilots outscored Hawaii 31-17 in the 4th enroute to a rousing 91-77 win.Geezaldinho wrote:Skookum win
Not unexpected when you play in the Stan Sheriff Center, it was a physical game but the Pilots did not back down.
All five starters were in double-figures: Fowler 20/9 rebounds; Cochrane 17; Andrews 16/11 assists; Mulheim 14; Shearer 11.
The Pilots had an impressive 27 assists on the night, setting a program record for most assists in a game against a Division I opponent.
Leading scorer for the game was Amy Atwell from South Perth, Australia with 30 points.

Re: 2021-2022 Schedule/Season
#7 Stanford was in Spokane today for their first road game of the season and Gonzaga came out like gangbusters, taking a 23-13 lead after the first quarter, but the Cardinal chipped away to finally notch a 66-62 victory, handing the Bulldogs their first loss of the season.
Down 4 players because of injury, #9 Oregon, UP's opponent December 4, was soundly beaten by #1 South Carolina, 80-63, today in the Bahamas. The #1 Gamecocks will face #2 UConn tomorrow.

The Pilots eased off the throttle in the 4th quarter with the starters acting as cheer leaders and coasted to a 80-54 finish over Prairie View A&M in Honolulu...
And maybe best of all, McKelle Meek and MJ Bruno made their first appearances of the season after coming back from injury with MJ getting her first point as a collegian.
