Pilots vs Michigan St. Nov. 27th, 2:30p Chiles Center (ESPN)
The Pilots complete their PKI experience with a match-up against the MSU Spartans and Coach Tom Izzo. The Spartans are 4-2, losing by one to the Zags on an aircraft carrier, beating Kentucky in OT, beating Villanova by 2, losing to Alabama in Rd 1 of the PKI, and beating Oregon by 4. They are a balanced team with four players averaging between 11 and 15 ppg. Their big guy is 6'9" 240# Mady Sissoko, a JR from Mali. Joey Hauser is a 6'9" SR F who is their best 3P shooter at 46%.
MSU is a strong rebounding team; they got 11 ORebs against Oregon. Pilots will need to work to minimize second chance points.
Let's hope Moses is good to go.

The Pilots have caught the attention of longtime Spartans coach Tom Izzo.
"They run their stuff so well and they should have beat (North) Carolina and then beat a team that we barely beat; beat 'em bad and we're dragging a little bit right now," he said in a radio interview.

Once again, MSU, like Villanova, is missing two key guys. No mention of UP missing two key players, including its starting point guard.Sound Voltex wrote:The Pilots have caught the attention of longtime Spartans coach Tom Izzo.

There is no way the UP staff or players would make excuses, but there sure seems to be a lot of whining elsewhere...

They could just sorta copy us and just start chucking threes like that one game during the Porter era where both teams scored 100 points.

At some point I might come around to how good they played this entire weekend, but this one hurts right now.

Michigan State wins on a missed shot at the buzzer and the 7 point Izzo foul rule. Can anybody point to another time that has happened?
Now I’m concerned about Izzo patting Tyler on the chest during the handshake and saying something like “ come play for us” .

This One Hurts. Great Game Pilots.
Losing happens but I wish the teams had decided the game. Calling fouls is always somewhat subjective but during a 3 minute stretch in second half - with Pilot momentum - the game was taken over by one official. Even with that ball and chain, we had a chance. Love this team! Kudos all around with our bench giving up nothing and Coach substituting so we always have a great mix on the floor.
Love Gorisito and Applewhite’s game and Vucinich’s rebounding. Can’t forget Sjolund all around. And all starters.
Played your hearts out guys and we love you for it!

Re: Pilots vs Michigan St. Nov. 27th, 2:30p Chiles Center (ESPN)
I've heard this time and time again and so have the coaches who game plan during the closing seconds. If I were a coach I would certainly instruct my players to foul and prevent a basket at the buzzer, trusting that the refs would not make the call. So, in that scenario, aren't the refs dictating the coaching decisions and ultimately the outcome of the game?
I think the refs have a job to do, whether it changes the outcome of the game or not. In addition, reviews of fouls or non-fouls in the last two minutes of a game should be the norm.

up7587 wrote:DoubleDipper wrote:What do YOU think? Was TRob fouled on that final shot with seconds to go in the game?
Yes, but you can't let it come to a last second shot. The refs don't want to "decide the game" at the buzzer. Now deciding the game early in the 2nd half, they're OK with that.
Michigan State got 17 Second Chance points to the Pilots' 7. To me that is the biggest area the Pilots need to improve, limiting offensive rebounds and 2nd chance points. That 7-point possession included 2 second chance points.
We also need to get Mike Meadows back in the line-up as a 4th consistent double digit scorer. Jack Perry is doing good work, but he scored less than 6 ppg in this tournament as the starting PG. His 3P percentage is 39%, and he is not a threat to drive to the rim. 18 of his 20 shots this year are from 3P range.

My take away is this team finally has some playable depth at the post and guard positions. After the Seattle game, it felt like they were destined to repeat last year’s script of playing 6 guys and wearing down against teams that had legitimate bigs. This weekend showed me that Applewhite and Gorosito are legitimate ballers. St. Pierre/Vucinic/Nduka is a post rotation that can hang with just about any team in the country. Hopefully Meadows comes back soon and then the boys will get another chance against a power 5 team when they play at Oregon on 12/17. This is going to be a fun year!

The ESPN guys also noted that one of our noticeable weaknesses was allowing Michigan State to score easily on out of bounds plays. I think they adjusted a bit in the second half, but probably something that should be still improved on.
