Grand Canyon
Was it mentioned anywhere that Grand Canyon is joining the WCC for the 25-26 season?

Considering Grand Canyon's size, athletic budget, their "fit" with the rest of the WCC schools, and especially the DEPARTURE OF GONZAGA, it is my guess GCU will be reconsidering its move...
Just a hunch!

Good. IMO, they're as bad a fit for the WCC as BYU was (and BYU was a terrible fit). If Stu Jackson wants to get back to an even ten schools, go get Denver or Cal Baptist.

GCU didn’t show up at the WCC cabinet meeting this week.
“ Jackson was unavailable for comment on Friday morning. I’m told the commissioner is spending his day trying to keep GCU and formulate a WCC counteroffer. It could include a reduction of the entry fee to the WCC and the pursuit of a basketball scheduling alliance with the Pac-12, per sources.”

Cripes, Stu, just let them go and hit them with a big exit fee on the way out.

In joining the Mountain West Conference, GCU has formally declined an invitation from the West Coast Conference that would have seen the Lopes become WCC members on July 1, 2025.

at least the conference gets to keep GCU's $16m entrance fee

I have not seen reports that the 16million was actually paid. Agreed on yes, but paid? Perhaps someone can confirm either way. Regardless, the 16million may well be the subject of litigation with the WCC arguing contract enforcement and GCU arguing to rescind the contract because they never agreed to join a conference materially changed with the loss of the Zags. Without the contract it's pretty much speculation. Lots of cash to be throwing around even for GCU.

Re: Grand Canyon
I’m not sure GCU was a good fit for the conference anyway.
Other than the size of the media market, there wasn’t anything that made them attractive to the WCC.
It’s a sign of the new conference landscape that they pushed so hard to get in the conference and then jumped.

As bad a fit as BYU was, GCU would have been far worse in my opinion...DoubleDipper wrote:Considering Grand Canyon's size, athletic budget, their "fit" with the rest of the WCC schools, and especially the DEPARTURE OF GONZAGA, it is my guess GCU will be reconsidering its move...
Yes, the Phoenix market would have been great, and in the current sports world $,$$$,$$$,$$$ is king, but as a former player, I think I echo the thoughts of many in asking the league commissioners to begin focusing on the experience, welfare, and education of the student-athletes.
I can remember my days as a kid playing in sports camps and leagues and seeing how there were way too many adults interfering with our simple enjoyment of playing...and now those adults are exploiting student-athletes, and in some cases, ruining the pure enjoyment of sports.

Re: Grand Canyon
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – West Coast Conference Commissioner Stu Jackson has issued the following statement on conference membership.
“We have been notified by Grand Canyon University of its decision to withdraw as a member of the West Coast Conference. We are disappointed with its decision to seek conference membership elsewhere just months after completing its membership agreement with the WCC that would have enhanced its national profile. The WCC views GCU’s decision as a missed opportunity to be part of one of the premier conferences in men’s basketball. The WCC is a perennial multi-bid league with a rich history that includes multiple national champions, six Final Four appearances and countless deep runs in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. The WCC Presidents’ Council will continue to evaluate the current landscape of Division I athletics, move forward ambitiously in examining expansion and alliance opportunities that position the WCC for NCAA success; pursue meaningful scheduling opportunities for all members; and generate national exposure for the Conference through expansive broadcast visibility to which it has become accustomed.”
