Around the WCC
Last night was opening night in the WCC and there were a few surprises...
USF, a 25-point winner over BYU in a closed scrimmage, ran out of gas in Ft. Collins and was outscored 21-10 in the fourth quarter and lost by 52-47.
EWU made the short trip to Pullman and lost a heartbreaker to WSU, 83-82 in OT after being up by 12 at halftime.
Cal blew out SMC in Berkeley, 90-58, SCU looked strong in its 73-60 win over Riverside, PU beat Fullerton 59-57, and LMU lost on the road to UNLV, 73-57.
UOP, a team that should do very well this season, beat Stanislaus by 40 points.

UP was the only WCC winner tonight as Pepperdine fell to UC Irvine, Pacific lost at Washington, and WSU lost by 29 at Stanford.

Re: Around the WCC
Gonzaga got scorched by Stanford 89 to 58, with an opening quarter score of 26 to 4. The #1 Mid-major ranking may be more reputation than substance. Tess Heal, former SCU Bronco, does not appear to have started for Stanford but came off the bench for 20 minutes and 6 points.
WSU beat Idaho 71 to 60.

Re: Around the WCC
What makes that interesting is that Stanford came into the season unranked, and is now only ranked 24 after the win.
The Cardinal are shooting 59% from beyond the arc for the season.

Call it "homerism" or wishful thinking but I'd like to believe that with the Pilot's defense, it would be a rare night to have some team make 59% from behind the arc. That is an astonishing %.

Disappointing that Cal only shot 44% from behind the arc.
Gonzaga truly draws well though, with over 5,000 for the game.

Re: Around the WCC
The College insider top 25 mid major poll has UP rising out of the receiving votes category to number 19.
Surprisingly, the zags are still number 1 after their thumping by Stanford. The Cal result isn’t part of it.

Re: Around the WCC
Apparently Gonzaga is dealing with several injuries. I assume they’ll be full strength by the time we play them.

Re: Around the WCC
Okay, #3 USC beat SCU, 81-50, but the Broncos held their own except in the paint in comparison to USC beating their previous two opponents, Northridge and Cal Poly, by a combined, 214-74.
I am told UOP is going to be very good this year, and tonight they beat Long Beach St., 81-65.
