Injury Watch '08! Empty Injury Watch '08!

Post by ninjapizza Tue Mar 11, 2008 6:33 pm

Time to revive the Pilots talk.

I seem to jinx teams sometimes by talking about how great they are. So now I'm going for the reverse jinx- Let's do it up like CNN and let's talk about drama and injuries!

Who's down?
Who's recovering now?
Who's got the sniffles?

Spring is almost upon us, people, let's get panicking!

Really, does Garrett suffer from hay fever? I used to get it every year, and a good friend who was at the Naturopathic College recommended something to me. I started taking it and have been hay fever free for three years. I normally don't trust anyone but an MD, but I do trust her and it worked. So, if you're serious, I'll pass on her recommendation to Garrett. Spring hay fever is the pits. Very Happy

I think that Coach Smith might have bit his tongue while eating a pretzel at the last hoops game... i saw him grimace a little.

here's a match description from a Canadian newspaper yesterday

Sinclair caused problems for the United States right from the start, creating good chances in the 7th and 8th minutes. She then put Canada up 1-0 in the 9th minute courtesy the Schmidt cross. Canada continued to apply pressure in the first half and Filigno headed in the second goal. Schmidt made the cross, but suffered an injury on the U.S. tackle.

Let's hope it's not serious.

Sounds like Sophie's playing somewhere in the offense. So, who's got the real smarts, the UP coaching brain trust or the CWNT brain trust?

NP - Saw the team, and I mean the WHOLE team, training outside a few weeks ago. (All except the Rapinoes, I should say. And geezer, I truly don't understand how they can be in Europe one day and back in Portland in a blink. But they most certainly were. Every single one one of them. Michelle, Sophie, Elli, Keelin...every returning player except the Fighting Rapinoes! Maybe 2nd semester has something to do with it?)

About a week later I saw Megan Rapinoe running with the team one day, and running on her own the next. I was shocked, as I believe it had only been about 5 months since her last knee surgery. She had no brace on her knee and ran as well as anyone. I did notice she has lost a lot of weight and looks a tad pale. Maybe an optical illusion, but she looks to have grown about 3 inches! She said that she and Rachael will both be ready come August.

And I wouldn't worry about Megan Sweeney. She looks healthy and very strong. And great speed. Just watching her made me realize why she had such a great freshman year at outside back. She's tough and quick.

Should have a few spring exhibition games coming up soon.

I know. It is amazing, but actually is about right on track. Just think of Greg Oden practicing with the Blazers, and he had a much more major knee surgery.

If they were "normal" non-athletes, they would probably be back to their day-to-day lives with no adverse effects. But the trick is building back all of the muscles around the weak and injured spots and to regain the muscle-memory and the explosiveness that they once had.

If my memory serves me correct, Megan was playing a bit at national team training camps at about this time last year when she was still trying to make the WC roster. And that was only five or six months or so after her original surgery.

Anyway, either way it's definitely encouraging and I hope that she will take it easy and get fully recovered. Because I still believe that a healthy Megan Rapinoe is probably the best player in the country.

I attended the Oregon 5A-6A girls’ high school basketball tournament, held at Chiles a week and ½ ago. While walking laps on the track at halftime or between games, I passed our ladies doing the ladder agility drill (feet into all the openings). I didn’t realize it was them until I got close and recognized them. I have seen basketball players and football players doing that drill, but our ladies were far more impressive. So quickly through it, and backwards too! This included BOTH Megans.

And at the conclusion of the last game of the day, I noticed Kendra and Janelle with trash bags and gloves. Then I looked further off and noticed that both soccer teams, the ladies and the gents, were on clean-up duty in the stands.

The Office of Events offers "Clean Up Duty" to various campus groups that want to get paid for it. I remember doing it a time or two for various causes... If I recall correctly, the pay wasnt half bad... (at least as it seemed as a poor college student).
