GU Hires New XC Coach

They have the nerve to think that they can challenge Portland!
It's great that they hired a full time coach and it sounds like he's had some tremendous success as a HS coach... would be nice to see some other WCC teams invest in their XC programs a bit.
But I think it's a huge stretch to think that they could catch up to UP any time soon. I mean... we don't even have our "A" team run at the WCC's and we darn near sweep it every year. If our top guys ran at the conference meet, we would finish 1-7 pretty much every time, something we nearly do with our "B" team anyway.
I mean... 27 years in a row now, right? And for the past couple of year's we've been top 10 nationally ranked, and we finished second in the west regional last year for crying out loud... it will be a long road for any WCC team to climb to ever reach that level.
Sometimes it's nice to remember just how damn good we are at XC!

Re: GU Hires New XC Coach
A nice hire by GU; it will be interesting to see how his coaching ability transfers from HS to college, when you have to add in recruiting and the higher level of academics & competition. I dont have a problem with them placing second behind us every year!
I hope that GU (or any other WCC team) can start to compete with us on a regular basis. Competition is a good thing, and should only make us better... The men go for their 30th consecutive WCC title next year!!!!

Re: GU Hires New XC Coach
Holy smokes! Tyson is a legend in Spokane and his dominance while heading up the Mead HS program was ridiculous. He sent Oregon some of their best distance runners back in the 90s. He will work hard to make that program pretty dang competitive within the next fews years, I think.

Re: GU Hires New XC Coach
This is one hell of a coups for the GU program!!! the talent pool of the GSL and distance running has always been very deep and very good. I remember running in high school, even the lower levels of that league were SOLID in XC.... With his name, hopefully he can get some kids to stay at home and give UP some good opponents to push both programs to their next respective levels...
