Post by Stonehouse Fri Aug 29, 2008 8:12 am

So... any doubters out there that the new website is WAY better than the old one? They'll now be posting video highlights as much as possible:

http://www.portlandpilots.com/news/2008/8/24/WSOC_0824080516.aspx?path=wsoc

Follow the link and click the video highlights link at the top. Pretty darn cool, huh? If nothing else, it'll definitely be worth going back to that details tab on the schedule page pretty often so you can always see the photo galleries and video highlights.

Fantastic! but we could show we are secure enough to show ALL the scores.....

I wanted to see just how they did it.

I like how it showed how the keeper decided to head the ball on the pass back to her. I didn't catch that during the game. It looks to me like her defender was trying a clearing pass, though. I doubt any ref would have called a penalty on that blooper.

Geezer, she didn't head it, she batted it down with her hand because it was moving away from her and she couldn't quite catch up to it. And I don't know a referee in the world who would have called that a back pass had Cody Miles actually caught the ball. It was a deflected ball from a Portland cross that happened to fall in front of the keeper, and given another opportunity (or shoot, give her 50 more opportunities) the defender wouldn't be able to play that same ball precisely in front of Cody like she did. Referees typically qualify a back pass by asking themselves two question: "did it appear intentional?" and if answer to that isn't a definitive "no," then it's "could/would the field player be able to play that same ball again 5 times in a row?" It's not illegal for a goalkeeper to come out and pick up a ball that's deflected off one of their own players, or that is mishandled into their path; it's all about intention--they can't pick up a ball that was deliberately played to them by one of their own players. The exception to that rule of course being unless the ball is played back to the keeper via a header. That can be picked up.

I just went back and looked at it. it's pretty hard to tell from that angle, but I guess you are right.

I totally agree on you interpretation of a pass back,

Heading back to the keeper being OK includes chesting it, etc. - Right?

Yeah, pretty much anything that isn't a deliberate pass back with the foot/leg is kosher

No referee should call a penalty on that--it should be an indirect free kick. Wink

But as we say in umpiring, that would be taking the "dirty" end of the stick.

I believe that you mean the video quality is very good, as well as the videography.

Now I know what my parents meant when they said they couldn't understand what I was talking about when I was in my twenties.

"Hey man, it's cool, Rochin. Lets split from this dive and xxxxxx xxxxxx get loaded!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man, that stuff's goooood man.........you got any chips or anything, man?" Wink

Just jokin' Roch. Keep being who you are! That's how you become who you will be! ----> (HUH?)

Oh, Rochin. My quote was meant in a Cheech and Chong type vein, which was popular when I was roaming the streets. I didn't mean to imply your post was anything like that.

I blew it and probably insulted you. (Would never want to do that. You're one of my faves on this board. It wouldn't be the same without you. Really.)

What I meant to imply was that I must be getting old because I didn't understand all your verbiage.

And I think you have it together so much more than I ever did at your age. I was a mess. (And you can see what I turned into...) Video Highlights of Oregon Game Electric-guitar-054

I think I've dug myself a very big hole...nothing new for me.

Haha yeah I suppose my vernacular is a wee bit different... No harm no foul FANatic, just taken a bit off guard. And for the record I think C&C-like activities would seriously cut into my enjoyment of microbrews... and I can't have that drunken

"Dude: OMG! The videos are hella bomb." At least that's what my two teens would say as praise. What I like about the first goal was how Megan ran the defender down and slide-tackled the ball to Foxhoeven for the open shot. That's aggressiveness and going all-out for an advantaqge.

As Pilots build their reputation as a perennial powerhouse, the video and game photos and all the features of the improved Web site are necessities to inform people about the quality of the team, the program and the school. It's very wise use of digital communications, IMHO. And there should be no lack of great video content.
