As if there were any doubt:

Portland’s three representatives are the most of any school in the country

CHICAGO, Ill. – Three University of Portland women’s soccer players will represent the United States at the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, which takes place Nov. 19 – Dec. 7 in Chile. Michelle Enyeart, Keelin Winters and Elli Reed were officially named to the team on Monday, when head coach Tony DiCicco announced his 20-player travel roster.

The Pilots will navigate the 2008 playoffs without the trio, joining 16 other collegiate institutions that are losing players to the U-20 roster. Portland is the only school with three representatives on the roster, while North Carolina is the only other program sending more than one player to Chile.

Every game of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup will be shown on ESPN360.com and fans will be able follow the U.S. matches on ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker.

“I have tremendous respect for this group of players,” said DiCicco. “They have sacrificed a lot to play for our national team, including missing out on part of their college seasons. But this group has achieved a level of team chemistry and inner support structure that is unique and special. It is a privilege to coach them and as individual players, they possess outstanding soccer pedigree. Our team strength is our unity and a different cast of stars emerges each game.”

The U.S. will open against France on Nov. 19 before facing Argentina on Nov. 22, with both games taking place at the Estadio Nelson Oyarzun in Chillan. The team will then travel to Estadio German Becker in Temuco to conclude group play on Nov. 26 against China.
Enyeart leads the U.S. attack with 10 goals in 2008, while Winters was named the team captain throughout qualifying. Reed’s versatility allows her to play either the midfield or defender positions for the squad.

Splitting time between the Pilots and the Under-20s, the three players have helped Portland to a 15-1-0 record and No. 3 national ranking. The team is currently riding a 14-match win streak with two regular season contests remaining.

Enyeart has appeared in 11 matches and is third on the Pilots’ roster with 17 points (5g, 7a). Winters has started 10 matches, played a variety of positions and has recorded two goals and one assist while helping Portland’s defense to 12 shutouts. Reed has played both defense and in the midfield and has five goals and four assists.

Portland will play its regular season home finale on Sunday against rival Santa Clara. That match will be televised live nationally on ESPNU at 1:30 p.m.

I can't help but be a bit depressed about this in a selfish way. It's an awesome opportunity for all three of them and I'm not upset that they're going, but I truly believe that we would be the favorites to win the title with them.

Without them? We've got a chance still, but the road will be just that much tougher.

Next year though? Wow... next year is going to be special.

Stoney just beat me to it, so I deleted my thread to join his.

The Amigas are in. UNC and Penn State have two players in. the rest of the schools have 1 each.

There are only 2 players from the PAC10, Sidney LeRoux from UCLA and Alex Morgan from CAL. after all the fuss with Stanford players hopping on and off the team, they were either cut or didn't deem it worth their while to play for their country.

Though some are lamenting our players not being here for the tournament, I commend them and think that in the long run it will be good for the National team and for Portland.

And I don't think you write off this year. the defense is still solid, and even if you just count the production of the remaining players, we match up with anybody on offense.

Interesting that Tony named 20 players to the roster. FIFA states in the organizing rules for the tournament that 21 players are to be named.

3 must be keepers.

There goes Hailee! (Might as well make it an even four players from Portland.)

I agree with you Geezer this is, in the long run a good thing for the players, the U20 National Team and the Pilots. (It's good for the Pilots because the players will be internationally seasoned veterans and likely tremendously confident and better than ever come next year.)

However, I am bitter about a couple things:

(1) There should be be a 2 player max rule. We are the only team giving up three players. It just is patently unfair come playoff time to lose three of your best players.
(2) It seems just about every year we are losing players to national team commitments. I realize when you bring in high caliber players you run this risk. But then you add in injuries, which are inevitible to all teams, and you just don't ever seem to be whole or fully loaded.

The last time we seemed whole was in 2005. Championship Year! Add four years: 2009. If we stay healthy and have good chemistry, we are going to be a steamroller next season.

Add four years: 2013. Is that our next can't miss shot after 2009?

I guess I needed to vent that off my chest. (I know, I have whined about it all year.) Sad

I think the other thing we need to recognize this helps with, notwithstanding that we lose some players almost every year, is recruiting. I am willing to bet that the Pilots being the only team with three players -- especially three who, if healthy, are likely to be starters -- is huge in the recruiting wars for players who have Women's National Team aspirations.

Plus, take a look at the picture to the left! Was it worth it? You bet!

GO PILOTS!

I like to think about this as a net loss kind of situation. At the beginning of the season I don't think we had the Megan R. that we have today. She has played off the rust from two years off and is really rolling. If she gets her full shot touch back in time for the playeroffs, I would trade her for one of the three. Elli is mostly a back line player for us now and I think we have that covered. Sophie has shown us she can get Michelle's job done up front, although she is not quite as fast, she certainly is reliable in the forward position.

The only place that is a little new to me is Michelle O at holding mid. We will miss Keelin's fight and superior air game.

So in my mind the departure of the three is not as bad as it looks on paper for our starting 11 but it certainly makes the team less deep than say a UCLA for example. If we can stay healthy I like our chances to make the finals. Once the two finalists have been decided anything can happen and usually does.

Thanks guys for the different perspectives. It helps.

Don't get me wrong, once the playoffs begin, anyone can sweep six straight, and we have a way better chance than most.

We will be seeded, hopefully a #1, but at least a #2, if we win out.

I realize the Pilot coaching staff will have whoever is out on the field prepared and ready for battle. We will always have at least a shot at the title because of our elite culture and excellent talent and experience base.

And more than any season I can remember, we have been preparing for the playoffs since the first match of the season. Everyone in Pilotville knows the situation.

I will be pumped for each and every match we qualify to play in, and will live and die with this playoff team until we either are eliminated or start going nuts as in UPSF's avatar.

Go Pilots.........the whisper WILL become a roar in November, and finally I will be rid of the Three Amiga and Rachael Rapinoe demons that have disturbed my Pilots focus this season. Those worries will happily be gone forever as I ride every high and low with the team I love, in any form, until the 2008 season lights have been extinguished.

Better to have great players who deserve global exposure who miss some games than to have no one worthy of being invited. Go, U20s! Go, Pilots! Think of it this way: Pilots can win TWO championships this year.
