Weekend split
They didn't look that good at all against LMU Thursday, with too many turnovers and bad shots.
Today they lost a big lead against Pepperdine, mostly because of trouble with the Waves' press, but stayed tough at the end to win by two. There are some moments when individuals are playing well; they just need to put it together as a team.

Re: Weekend split
They didn't do any better with the ball today, even though they won.
30(!) turnovers.
the only thing I see saved them was that Pep had 22.

Bad Coaching by Jim Sollars
Bad coaching is killing this team. Why is this guy still the head coach. Could it be because he's willing to coach for pennies (cheap labor) if you ask me. I can tell those players aren't having a good time. To many turnovers, 30 in one game would not be exceptable if I was the coach. A player with 5-7 turnovers each game just blows me away. All that coach those is sit on his A$$ on that bench drinking gatorade, looking confused and not interested.
Those girls are not being motivated and that's just not right. If they were being correctly coached and motivated the team would believe in what they were doing and especially fight for victory in every play. Then and only then would the mistake be eliminated or corrected.
UP.....it's time to make a coaching change!

Re: Weekend split
Not to worry. Word is retirement will come shortly.
I have to say, I think he's a great guy and he has done some great things with teams in the past--most of the banners in the Chiles Center were put up there by the women. But the last of the really good teams was about 10 years ago. Since then it's been up and mostly down.
BTW, you sound familiar to me, almost like I know you (just kidding--the alumni in the band have similar views to yours).

Re: Weekend split
Coach Sollars is retiring at the end of the season... that has already been announced.
Any word on the replacement? It seems to be awfully quiet on that front...
I dont think that it is any coincidence that the Pilots were at the top of the WCC and nationally ranked when we had Assistant Coach Graves... after he left and took over the Head Coach job at Gonzaga, they got real good real fast...

Re: Weekend split
That they did. Look at the UP staff now--seems there's one or two new assistants each year. Hard to dismiss that as a factor, especially when assistants have some recruiting duties.

Re: Weekend split
Anybody else notice that Kathy Adelman has been at several UP games?

Re: Weekend split
Yes, she was there with her whole family on Thursday and they brought their fast food dinner. I've never seen her at a game since she graduated and now she's there at least two games in a row (I didn't make Saturday's game). It does give one pause.

Hmmm....
A recent Tribune article on Kathy Adelman Naro: Tribune
She certainly would be a candidate, I would think...

Well, she has been to a few games over the years...
She is a full time coach.

Re: Weekend split
Kathy Adelman would be a very interesting selection. Former player, plus she has the both the passion and bloodline to succeed. That is if she would be interested in the position. The fact she admitted to being very dark and depressed - now that concerns me a little. I am no doctor but childbirth, hormonal changes, postpartum depression and coaching all together sounds sort of serious.
I just want to say I think Jim Sollars is an honorable man. I also think he was a terrific coach -- in the 1990s. Because of everything he's done for University of Portland, he should be commended. He is just not the right man for this team right now. Coach Adelman just might be the right lady for the job right now.

Re: Weekend split
Before we get ahead of ourselves here, we may want to realize that there are Jesuit kids out there on some of these visiting teams' rosters, i.e. Lauren Wilkins with LMU... Perhaps she likes to watch/visit with some of her former players, eh?

Re: Weekend split
I didn't mean to imply that she had never been to a game, just that I'd never seen her at a game and I've been to a lot of games over the years.
The fact that she is a full time coach and the mother of 3 young daughters is what makes her appearance at multiple games this season interesting. After her own practice she brings her whole family and supper to watch more basketball. It would be understandable if the team were in the hunt for the league crown or had some Jesuit alumni on the squad or if her girls were old enough to actually be interested in basketball. None of these is the case. Despite the Pilots struggles this season the team deserves more support and 5 more supporters in the stands is a good thing. I hope the Naro's have joined our band of regular supporters, I just have my doubts.

womens basketball
Those banners you see hanging in the Chiles that are forwomens basketball were all earned as far I know during Kelly Graves time asst. coach. He went from UP to St Marys where he won a WCC Championship . Then to Gonzaga where he has won more than one.
As I have said more than once the Pilots need a new womens coach. It doesn't take a Pat Summit to tell you that, just watch a few games.
