Pilot's beat St. Mary's
I am so jacked up that I have to come off the ceiling to my spot on the couch to coment. I don't know the exact score but to me it doesn't matter (2 pt win or 18 is a win), yeah Ha.... That Sikma dunk at the end was a great way to finish!!!

Great game Pilots. I know St. Mary's is still adjusting to life without Patty but they are still a very very good team. I'm really impressed.
Congrats

What a game. That may have been the most important (and best) game I've watched in my 7 years on or around the bluff.
How about that. Second place! Let me say that again. SECOND PLACE!!!!!

Wow. WOW. WOW! I am speechless!
The Pilots just played amazing tonight--and solid. I cant wait to re-watch from the DVR!

Re: Pilot's beat St. Mary's
On the post-game radio interview, Coach Wolf said the team was waiting in the hall for Derek to finish his TV interview, then went off to celebrate. That to me sums up what a real team these guys have become.
Could you make a coach of the year argument for anyone besides Rev?
What great efforts by everyone tonight. I just don't know what else to say.

Haha. When I told the wife and daughter (who rarely attend) that I was going to watch the DVR when we got home, they just looked at me!

Very good crowd tonight, did anyone hear the attendance? Good support from the students. The band was great, as usual.
And, I thought the refs did a nice job tonight, pretty much letting the players play. They allowed the guys to mix it up a little on rebounds, and didn't make a lot of ticky-tack calls.

The game story on the Pilot site said around 3300. Give the SMC fans credit--they mostly seemed to stay the whole game, unlike fans of some Pac-10 schools up north I could mention...
And a great turnout by the students, who also stayed to rush the floor. Looks like the free hot wings were the difference.

Re: Pilot's beat St. Mary's
Okay, now I have something specific.
Why the big deal about Samhan?
He's strong, and has a jump shot, but his footwork is nothing spectacular and he's not that fast. Of course, it helped that he got in foul trouble tonight. Kind of a letdown, like seeing John Bryant in person at the SCU game.

Now I'm going to sit down and watch it all over again on ch. 37.
This time with my feet up, a Pliny in my hand, and a smile on my face.
If you don't catch it tonight, it'll be on again Sunday at 7:00 PM.

Guess I'll have to watch it the old fashioned way, since last I checked the CSN section of On Demand has plenty of Duck shows, but only one Pilot game (against...the Ducks).

He has such a nice touch, I don't know why he doesn't get more shots. I noticed he had an extended conversation with Coach Rev during the handshaking. Wonder what that was about?

Probably 'cause Omar was at some Pete newell camps, where Rev coached.

Re: Pilot's beat St. Mary's
I just watched the game, again... random things that stuck out:
Alright, no let down... let's take it to the Zags on Thursday!
- Only 5 Pilot turnovers.
- Nik & Jared, solid. I mean really... a combined 45 points, 8-13 from 3 (Jared 6-7; and the footage of him at practice shooting 3's with 2 balls, 1 in each hand... ).
- Luke Sikma's line: 3-4 FG, 4-4 FT, 8 boards, 4 assists. And his block on Simpson and dunk in the final minute were spectacular.
- The students really brought it tonight. Keep it up! Chiles Center is a GREAT hoops venue when it's rocking.
- Kramer Knutson. 3-4 FG, and just stellar defense. I think we are going to see BIG things from Kramer.

Re: Pilot's beat St. Mary's
We already DID see great things from Kramer. I though his Defense was spectacular tonight.
And it seems like team defense has gone to a new level. Those guys really DO "get" it. Rev really sold them on the concept. - Great stuff.
Jared shooting two balls at once was sick. They showed him doing it twice, and they said he was 4/10 in practice.

Agreed. Team defense was outstanding.
I didnt mean to slight Kramer's accomplishments... I just think we are going to see a lot more in the future.

Did I read the paper right.....FIRST win in 27 years over a ranked team?? Can someone who recorded the game put highlights of Jared shooting the threes in each hand up? I'd like to see that!!

Re: Pilot's beat St. Mary's
Huge win! That is so exciting to hear, looks like pretty much everyone had a solid game. One thing I noticed early in the game was the Pilots were being outrebounded badly, but by the end were only -1. And only 5 TOs, awesome. Congrats to the guys, and I think they've got a great shot at beating Gonzaga Thursday!

Re: Pilot's beat St. Mary's
Navigator,
I wish I could. I know he's your fav. The color comentator (I thought both he and play by play guy were fair and equal balanced) started saying that Jared Stohl he's one of the best "unknown" shooters on the west coast. By the end of the game he was proclaiming that Jared Stohl is one of the best "unknown" shooters in the country. Of course us Pilot fans are so spoiled that were accustomed to his shooting. I luv that little hitch type step and dribble that he's developed when the opponents come flying at him after Nik and T.J. pass off to him. It's great to see them flying past, him readjusting then "got it". He's really improved that move this year against tough D-1 competion.
The Pilot's made the ESPNU college basketball highlights. Which Andy Katz (Gonzaga's Shrill and Few buddy) and the ESPU crew usually reserve only for the Zaggetes. St. Mary's allways get's a raw deal from them too. Hmm....they have one of the best most electrifying guards in the the country and it's happened all season to them. It will be nice to see Mill's back soon even though with him in there they will most likely beat the Pilot's. I guess Mill's has pretty much put Pargo's( and his weakness's exposed) chance of being drafted in first round, maybe not drafted in the 2nd round either .
Great game for the Pilot's, I just hope T.J. can recover in time. He was really a workhorse bringing the ball up last night. I think Eric got a case of the freshman "jitters" and they may have Nik bring the ball up sometimes so he can calm down. Thus, getting in the flow of the game before he's called upon to set the offence. But, I love Eric being in there he's got more to offer the team as T.J.'s backup considering the alternative .

"I guess Mills has pretty much put Pargo's( and his weakness's exposed) chance of being drafted in first round, maybe not drafted in the 2nd round either."--MesaPilot1.
I'm not sure if I would go that far. In my opinion, Mills is probably going to end up going in the first round still and Pargo in the second. Mills is a tremendous player, however, Pargo has had some success (though some inconsistency) against a much tougher schedule. Call me crazy, but, it's kind of hard to wholeheartedly celebrate a win against a ranked team that's not at full strength. Mills was playing like the MVP of the WCC before the injury occurred, and for people who weren't impressed by the front court players of SMC...well, that's because Mills made them all better.
IMO the WCC is so evenly balanced among the top few teams that injuries will do a big part in deciding who does well. USD isn't the same without Brandon Johnson. SMC isn't the same without Mills. We went through most of our losses without a role player in Ethan. The last two wins were impressive, however, I'm greedy and want more. I want to see it against a team that's at full strength. If you take away the player who was called the "best pointguard in America" by one ESPN commentator one week ago (Mills), the victory over that team has an asterik next to it. The drop off from Mills to his backup at SMC is pretty huge IMO.
All the same, we're starting to play in a special way at home. We're definitely the underdog against Gonzaga though. We can't start that game as poorly as we started against SMC (with Raivio saving us offensively) and expect to win. Gonzaga is much more opportunistic than St. Mary's right now.

A quick check this morning and anybody making 3 3's a game.....Jared is #3 in the nation in %. There wasn't as many, that mark seems to have shrunk a bit. The guy from Notre Dame is 4 a game at 45%, Mc something. Old age setting in as I can't reel off the names anymore.

Re: Pilot's beat St. Mary's
The two good players I think the Pilot's need to concentrate on are Daye and Gray. Bouldin has been "hot" lately but I believe the way Nik has been playing that's pretty much a push if not an advantage to Portland between those two. Daye and Gray are two of the most physically talented Basketball player's they have had in a number of years if not ever. If one of or both those player's go off on the Pilots Thursday will be a long, long.long night. Otherwise I like the Pilot's chance's with the Home Court ,etc....
That's great about Stohl's stat's and he's really improving with some improvision at this level. The Pilot's don't have to set double screens and he can just "rub off " Kramer,Robin, Luke or Jasonn to get a shot off.
