Trip to Australia in May

Here's a snippet:
The trip to Australia, that will take place in late May, will include four games, three in Sydney and another in Cairns.
...
"In terms of recruiting, it helps as here in the United States as players want to be a part of program that will give them opportunities such as a foreign tour," Reveno said. "In Australia, we will continue to develop contact with key players in Australia basketball that could potentially help us attract players in the future."
Reveno, who is the reigning WCC Coach of the Year, is no stranger to recruiting international players as the current Portland roster features four international athletes.
More so than recruiting, the trip will provide a rare opportunity for the team to bond on and off the court during the summer. "It is a great opportunity to have 10 days of practice prior to going to Australia," Reveno said. "To have this experience in May when we normally are not allowed to work with our team is fantastic."

HA---so, we're following in St. Marys' footsteps with recruiting down under then! That's cool. Finding the next Mills is no easy task. I wish we could look for the next Leandrinho Barbosa in South America though...

Re: Trip to Australia in May
wcc schools have looked to australia for recruits for a while. a patty mills is hard to find but there are always other very talented guys.
as far as south american recruits, from what i believe they get into pro ball earlier. so that would take them out of ncaa competition.

On the women's side, Sollars has had plenty of Australian players over the years.

Going back a few years... wasn't Grant "Wild Thing" Tracy Australian? He played in the early 90s.

Oh, also... I know that Jason Brough (UP's SID) will be travelling with the team so we're likely to get some very good coverage of the trip down there.
Nice!

Re: Trip to Australia in May
Grant Tracy was from Redmond, Washington. He started slow, as a frosh, then improved greatly to become all WCC and a 1000 point plus career player.

Ah... OK! Thanks for the info. Not sure why I thought he was Australian... maybe he went down there to play professionally for a while? I remember Rick Brainard (another former Pilot) went down to Australia to play after college and ended up coming back to play in the Chiles Center with his Australian team for an exhibition game before the season one year.

Rick Brainard was another of my favorite Pilots. What a list to compile. Art Easterly, Dan Hunt, Jim Dortch, Bill Garner, Jose Slaughter, Darwin Cook, Jim Altenhofen, etc, etc.

Yes, but, if I was a coach, I'd rather travel to South America.
