Thursday April 30, 2009 vs. Carolina RailHawks - D 0-0
Overall, probably the most entertaining 0-0 draw I've ever seen. Aside from the first 15 minutes, the Timbers were by far the better team but just couldn't find a finisher.
Sound familiar?

Can anyone enlighten me as to why Chris Seitz was loaned to the Timbers for 4 days?? Haha that seems like a suspiciously short loan term (I didn't know they could do that...)

Timbers starting GK Steve Cronin tweaked his ankle at practice on Wednesday, and our backup (I think) is straight out of college. The Timbers have another match against Carolina on Saturday, then get a week off. So Salt Lake loaned Seitz for essentially two matches until Cronin's ankle gets better.

May not have seen me, but I was there. Down low in 108 with ohh_yeah, on the aisle by 107. My first ever Timbers match and I'm next to a tourist who asks me, "So what happened to Timber Jim?" and "Does [whatever group he came with] go to all the Timbers games?"Rob's Jacket wrote:PurplePrideTrumpet wrote:Bump for match day!

Timbers outshot Carolina (WTF is a Railhawk?), but they put more shots on target. Seitz was tremendous last night.
Saturday it's the same two teams, same time, same place.

I wasn't there on Thursday because I had to work; but, I'll likely be there on Saturday. I'm probably going to sit somewhere on the west side simply because I like the view from over there.

Re: 2009 Portland Timbers [Results]
Oh OK that makes sense... Chris Seitz was a top 5 pick last year if I do recall so it's no surprise he's doing well. Steve Cronin should do well when he gets well, he was a good keeper last year but just had one of the most atrocious defenses in the world (literally) in front of him.
I hope to make it to a few Timbers games this season (haha its easier to get tickets and WAY cheaper than games up north), and no PPT I won't show up wearing the rave green, I have SOME scruples...

I must have been about three or four rows above you - I was dead center in 108 row J. Won't be able to make Saturday's game (have to study for finals), but should be back for Rochester on the 14th. RCTID!

Steven Cronin... former Santa Clara Bronco (which makes him somewhat shady) but also former college roommate of LaSalle great (and current San Jose Earthquake) Ryan Cochrane. Just another reason why LaSalle is the greatest high school ever.

May 30 and 31 will be an epic weekend. Saturday is the Vancouver match--self-explanatory. Then there's an exhibition with Club America's reserves (CA is one of Mexico's biggest clubs, up there with Chivas) on May 31. A little ultra told me the club expects a sellout and is considering putting in temporary grandstands on the east side.DaTruRochin wrote:

There's also Bayern Munich's reserves on July 2. Valencia was going to be the "big" friendly until they canceled their summer US tour. But...rumor has it another "big" club is coming...

For the Rose City, 2-nil!
For the Rose City, 2-nil!
When the Timbers scored the second goal, right after "You Are My Sunshine," the North End went nuts. I mean, just exploded. I've never seen anything like that, not even at Merlo.
At the tailgate today, one of the guys in the TA I know was introducing me to someone and said, "PPT's first Timbers game was Thursday, but you'd never know it."

Watched the match on usllive.com. Fantastic result and thoroughly deserved. Hopefully Cronin can pick up where Seitz left off.

Re: 2009 Portland Timbers [Results]
I was at the match, and I have to say that it was probably the best reffed match I've seen in this league. The ref was solid until about the 70th min. or so. After that he made a bunch of no-calls and just plain inexplicable calls. I think he got tired. As for the match itself, it was a very good match. The Timbers look as solid as I've seen them. Carolina has a very tough defense and a good offense and yet the Timbers were able to put two away. They had better possession in the mid-field than I've seen in a long time. About the only think that I felt they could improve on was their attack; but, that is coming along nicely. Overall, I am very pleased with what I see.

Re: 2009 Portland Timbers [Results]
I was at the game as well Saturday, hee hee and yes PPT i did wear a jacket with a stripe of rave green (but no team crest or identification), which resulted in a few jovial discussions with your fellow scarf wearing types as I sat in sect 108. The game was definitely entertaining, I'd like to see a bit more creativity/spacing and whatnot, but there were some fine finishes (haha but the Railhawk (wtf?) defense should be running for their effort on that first goal, NOBODY should be that open on a far post cross...). I think what I saw was a team really still learning to play with each other, I think the lack of roster continuity is something that plagues USL play, especially early in the season. Definitely saw individual skill, but chemistry is still in it's rudimentary stages.
Also, Seitz is a flat out stud, he commanded the defense really well and made some fantastic saves, it was fun to see him play... reminds me of watching Marcus Hanneman when I was little, he's gonna be a special player for sure. I hope Cronin can bring, if nothing else, the same command Seitz brought... It made such a difference in defensive organization.
It was definitely a fun time and a nice way to keep my Derby Saturday rolling...

Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see how many players from the USL roster make the MLS team after the transition. I believe that only about 4 USL players are on Sounders FC now: 3 from the former roster as well as Osvaldo coming from a different team. It's taken Sigi Schmidt a long time even to build more trust in LeToux, former USL MVP.
I can't wait to continue this rivalry...

Just checked Talk Timbers. The big boys drew 0-0 last night after outshooting Cleveland 24-8. Sounds suspiciously like the home opener.
Meanwhile the U-23s drew with Victoria 2-2 at home. The scorers were our own Jarad van Schaik and Logan Emory.

I couldn't make it out last night, but I wish I did. Timbers 2-1 on a stoppage time penalty.
Next up: U-23s at PGE tonight and Saturday. The big boys are at Puerto Rico May 22.

Re: 2009 Portland Timbers [Results]
Went out to the U23s last night. Timbers over Spokane 4-0 and it could have been a lot more.
You know those games when the Pilot women are playing an opponent that is clearly overmatched, like Northern Arizona the first time around? That's what this felt like. The offense was working all night long and the defense and keeper were rarely challenged.
There were about 15 or so from the TA there and we came up with some funny stuff to yell. One of the Spokane girlfriends tried to fire back at ohhh_yeah. FAIL.
On a Pilot note, Miguel Guante was signed and in the lineup last night rehabbing an injury.
There might have only been about 300 there, but some of the first team Timbers came out, as well as some other celebrities like Kelsey and other Pilots.

Re: 2009 Portland Timbers [Results]
Well, it looks like the offense finally got going tonight. Forget only 4 goals. Tonight the U23s beat Yakima 8-2.
I'm telling all of you: get out to a U23s match if there's one near you. They have games left at PGE Park, Kiggins Bowl in Vancouver, Lincoln Park Stadium, Tigard HS, and Lincoln HS. The $5 ticket puts it right next to Pilot soccer as one of the best deals in town.
The best part is, these guys just attack constantly. Warren Ukah, who is here trying out for the big Timbers, just stands out so clearly and is so exciting to watch. He could start for the big club next week if they were allowed to call players up.
On a Pilot note, Austin got the nod in goal, Jarad and Logan played the full 90, Miguel Guante was subbed out in the second half, and Frankie was a second half sub who set up one of the goals beautifully.
Just another fun, relaxing game on a nice night.

Re: 2009 Portland Timbers [Results]
A fantastic weekend for the boys in Puerto Rico. Friday they drew 1-1, and Sunday a 2-1 win!
The current version of the Timbers has now won its 100th game.
The U-23s won this weekend in Tacoma, and though they just missed qualifying for the US Open Cup they lead the PDL Northwest Division.
Big weekend coming up: Saturday, the U-23s play at Kiggins Bowl in Vancouver (WA) at 3:30 and the big club has a home game with Vancouver at 7. Then there's the friendly with Club America's reserve team Sunday at 5.
