LMU has been something of a surprise this year. At 10-9 they have the fourth-best overall record in the WCC, and 7 of those losses have been by 6 or fewer. They did beat USC and Notre Dame on the road. Max Good appears to be turning things around after what was a rough 2008-09 for them.

That said, this is a game the Pilots should win. They have some good guards, but so do we. Their big men are not quite as experienced as ours, and I like the way Robin has started the conference season. Defending the three will also be a key as LMU is a decent 3-point shooting team. There aren't any teams you can take lightly in the WCC but I think the Pilots have seen how hard they need to work after starting this conference season with three tough games.

Aw Shucks, I'm just trying to slip in to town (No mattywhizz , not slip it in) watch two wins, enjoy the game and leave without having to see anybody mistakingly walking around the beautiful city of Portland wearing Bulldog memorabilia.

But I'm wondering why Rev, The AD, and the University President did not get me the seats I requested next to the director of referee's" Big game Dave",lol. Oh well, next year, I bet he will be attending the Bulldog game.
I think that's the game I am aiming for in my fourth year on the board (My senior year, lol).

I'll be the guy just trying to keep Basketballhead off of the soccer field....not really.

MAN AM I JACKED UP TO HEAR WHO REV'S NEW COMMITTMENT IS FROM HIS TWITTER TWEET. Maybe it's one of those JUCO's he was scouting this fall when they were in SO-CAL for the Anaheim Classic........I can't wait.......... Yahoo!

Hope to meet more of you guys this year,

Wow, those are impressive road wins. 2 seasons ago ND had one of the longer home win streaks in the nation in South Bend. Once again we need to bring our A-game. Another game with 79% free throw shooting and a low number of turnovers would be nice...

All I can say is if I make my planned weekend trip down a few days early, I better be treated to a stronger showing than I saw up at Hec Ed... I'd like to see Jared break the all time 3 record THIS weekend... that's right, I'm expecting 10 one game and 9 the other! (I can dream right??)

LMU @ Portland, Jan. 21--MesaPilot night @ Chiles Empty Hello Pilots

Post by IronLions Wed Jan 20, 2010 10:22 am

It will be interesting to see which Lions team shown up. As you expect with a young team we have been very inconsistent. The Lions are coming off a win vs. Santa Clara but also two difficult losses to Pepperdine and USF-both games we should have won. Drew Viney our leading scorer has some sort of foot injury and will miss 2-3 weeks. Vernon Teel WCC co-player of the month in November has been on a two game skid and had a nice visit to the dog house. VT is a big strong guard and I expect him to shake his funk and get back into playing good team ball. We have way more depth this year and expect to see guards Seton Hall transfer Larry Davis and freshman Given Kalipinde out there. Our talented freshman center Edgar Garibay is out due to a torn ACL and red shirt freshman Ashley Hamilton has stepped up. He is very athletic and can hit his free throws if fouled. Big bodied freshman Alex Osborn should also get some time. He had very good minutes at the being of the year, but has been on the bench more recently. Tim Diedrich a soph has stepped in to take some minutes.

All in all we are playing good ball but we have a problem with our defense…especially guarding the three which could spell big trouble for us with your terrific shooters. Actually, it was the Waves hot shooting (60% from 3) that got back in the game which we were leading by as many as 17 points. I’m really hoping we step up to guard the outside…since the practice started Coach Good has often referenced the Pilots. “If we give that much room and spaces against Portland were dead” something along those lines with some expletives mixed in.

Look forward to the game…and best of luck.

Go Lions!

THANK YOU IRONLIONS!

You are always so informative , and from what I've followed of the Lions right on with the scouting report. It seems like in a good way the players and some of the powers that be have a belief in Coach Good. He is quite a good ol' cusser, lol. It is great for the whole league that is hoping to stop the coaching turnover from top to bottom.

Heres hoping for a good game, and a good crowd (students) to support the play.

Oregonian article on Smeulders:

Portland basketball: Robin Smeulders reaps benefits as opponents focus on Pilots' three-point threats

By Jim Beseda, The Oregonian

January 20, 2010, 4:47PM

Portland forward Robin Smeulders often shrugs and smiles when talking about his surge of inside scoring through the first two weeks of the West Coast Conference season.

He won't allow himself to get very excited about his offense -- he has 72 points in three league games -- because the Pilots (10-7, 1-2 WCC) are tied for fifth place heading into Thursday's game against Loyola Marymount at the Chiles Center.

The Pilots have noticed that opponents are focused on what T.J. Campbell, Nik Raivio and Jared Stohl might do from beyond the three-point line and are not preoccupied with anything Smeulders and the other UP big men might do close to the basket.

Now, whenever the ball goes inside to Smeulders, he's finding that he typically has only one defender to beat because teams are reluctant to send help and leave one of the Pilots' three-point threats unguarded.

If Smeulders continues to see one-on-one coverage against the Lions (10-9, 1-2) in tonight's game, the 6-foot-10, 230-pound senior from Braunschweig, Germany, hopes to keep wrecking havoc with his offense.

"I'm just trying to make plays," Smeulders said. "If that means I end up getting 10 assists or 20 rebounds and zero points, as long as we win, it doesn't matter. Lately, though, I've been scoring a lot."

He led all scorers with 24 points in the Pilots' 81-78 loss to Gonzaga in the WCC opener two weeks ago, scored 19 points in last week's 63-54 victory at San Diego, and then broke loose for a career-high 29 points in Saturday's 77-72 loss at Saint Mary's.

"I didn't change anything in my game or anything," Smeulders said. "The team didn't change anything. Things have just been working a lot better for me. The guards have been getting the ball to me more and I've been finishing."

Pilots coach Eric Reveno's basic offensive philosophy is to take whatever the defense gives, and he has said repeatedly that he doesn't care where his team's points come from as long as his players recognize what's available and execute accordingly.

Lately, that has translated into getting the ball to Smeulders.

"You really can't discount the fact that teams are choosing not to help on Robin at all," Reveno said. "Idaho helped and paid the price by Jared Stohl making 10 of 15 three-pointers. I don't know how many assists our post players had that game, but a lot of that was inside-out stuff.

"Other teams have all watched that tape and coaches don't want to look foolish. Nobody wants one of the best three-point shooters in the conference (Stohl) or T.J. Campbell or anybody else going off shooting threes, because everybody knows we can do that. So, they're saying, 'Let's see if they can beat us inside.' "

Smeulders has stepped up to the challenge, pushing his season scoring average to 13.9 points, which is second on the team behind Raivio (14.1) and head of Campbell (12.5) and Stohl (9.4).

"Teams are really trying to deny our outside shooters the ball," Smeulders said. "Down low, it's really one-on-one, so the other big men and I have been trying to take advantage of that.

"Of course, I'm not going to force it, where I'm getting 20 points on 50 shots or anything like that. But if it's there, I'm going to try and score."

In three WCC games, Smeulders is shooting 70.3 percent (26 of 37) from the field and 71.4 percent (20 of 28) from the free-throw line. He also has 21 rebounds, two blocked shots, a steal and an assist during that stretch.

At the same time, the Pilots have seen their three-point attempts drop from 20.1 a game to 14.3, and their shooting percentage from three-point range has slipped from 39.9 percent (112 of 281) in 14 nonconference games to 32.6 percent (14 of 43) in league play.

"It's only three games, but this is how the league figured out to play us last year," Reveno said. "I'm not really concerned. I think that we've got to keep working to execute our offense and get our shooters shots, because the harder we make it for teams to take that away, the more it will open up other things if they really do commit to it."

It has been a nice surprise to have Robin producing inside. Maybe its just me but he also seems to be getting a quicker release on some shots when he needs them.

Just more ammo for the Pilot's offensive game, can you imagine when Nik gets on a roll too, or Luke gets some ribby put-back's on misses or 10 foot Sikma specials. Wouldn't it be nice if a few of the guys got on a roll TOGETHER someday soon in Spokane. I digress,Portland the city that never stop's clouding over, lol, I luv it.

Everyone stepped up today with Nick down. Luke had a great game, hope it continues. Nem also impressed me with his play. He seems to be getting a little bit of confidence, which could be very helpful next year. (Or if it takes Nick a while to get back, this year.) And Jared's defense has taken a big step forward this year.

We also seemed to have better spacing on offense today. Even when they were keeping things close in the first half it seemed to be from 3s just not falling, not playing bad.

Nem and Luke had great games tonight, and Jared was solid in the starting role.

The key tonight was defense. Absolutely dominant team defense on the Lions--forcing turnovers, blocking shots, and only allowing 11 LMU field goals all night. We held LMU to 3 points in the final 10:38.

I really thought that tonight was going to be the tougher game of the weekend... but Pepp is looking good. Starting out 3-0 in conference, and only losing by 8 at Gonzaga. We must bring the same defensive intensity Saturday night!

GO PILOTS!

Stat of the night, unless you count Luuuuuuuke's entire line (19 points, 11 boards, 4 assists, 3 steals, 3 blocks) as one stat.

I'm speechless, and so happy to return from a month-long hiatus!

(And, for the first time, grateful that I plunked down $8.)
