Alexis Gannis WCC co-player of the week
You go girl. Great Job.
SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- Portland sophomore forward Alexis Gannis, who shot 83.3 percent from the field and averaged 18.0 points and 12.0 rebounds to help UP defeat San Francisco and Santa Clara at home, was named the West Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week, announced on Monday. It’s the first player of the week honor this season for Gannis and the second of her career.
She shares the award with Louella Tomlinson of Saint Mary’s.
During Thursday’s 53-50 win over USF at the Chiles Center, Gannis scored 20 points and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds, becoming the first Pilot to record that many boards since Rachel Warren in 2006. The native of Phoenix, Ariz., took over in the closing minutes against the Dons to score Portland’s final 11 points of the game. She missed just two shots, going 7-for-9 from the field, while hitting six free throws. The double-double is her team-high fifth of the season.
On Saturday, Gannis missed just one shot (8-for-9) from the floor en route to 16 points during UP’s 73-65 win over the Santa Clara Broncos. She grabbed seven boards to help the Pilots win their fourth straight game. Gannis also averaged 2.5 steals per game during the weekend.
Portland sits at 15-7 on the season and finished the first swing through the WCC with a 4-3 league mark, good for a tie for third place. This weekend, the Pilots welcome Northwest rival and first-place Gonzaga to the Chiles Center for a 2:00 p.m. game on Saturday. The Bulldogs entered the national rankings this week for the first time since 2005, coming in at No. 24 in the Associated Press Poll.
