Re: Kentucky Playing at the Rose Garden in November!
I was not aware we had the lowest budget of all WCC schools. Any insight into what our athletic budget is and how much below our peers we are?

Not only that, having Rev be able to go into recruits homes and say, we maybe a small program, but we will go out and play the big boys any time anywhere is a fantastic selling point.
Agreed! This is huge!

Re: Kentucky Playing at the Rose Garden in November!
Thanks, Geez, for that time-suck of a link. An hour or so later:
Total Athletic Expenses
LMU - 17,709,586
USD - 17,353,701
PEP - 13,747,736
USF - 12,908,108
GU - 12,903,435
SCU - 12,745,031
SMC - 12,080,234
UP - 10,216,961
Men's Basketball Expenses
GU - 3,053,437
USD - 2,354,414
USF - 2,258,049
LMU - 2,140,989
SMC - 1,967,983
PEP - 1,861,123
SCU - 1,728,259
UP - 1,691,831
WCC Total Expenses - All Sports (2008-2009)
109,664,792
WCC Total Expenses - Men's Basketball (2008-2009)
26,222,213
WCC Total Expenses - All Sports (2003-2004)
57,617,708
WCC Total Expenses - Men's Basketball (2003-2004)
8,232,526
Pretty staggering numbers... that means in the past five years, the WCC schools have nearly doubled the amount they spend on athletics and the amount of money they spend on men's basketball has more than tripled.
Interesting that UP lags so far behind (1,863,273) behind the school in 7th place (SMC), which is more than the difference between SMC and PEP, which is in third place.
LMU's spending is so high because they have so many more sports (M&W water polo, W swimming, softball, M&W rowing). Of course, a lot of other WCC schools have a lot of extra sports too, so I'm not sure why LMU's expenses are so high.
San Diego spends over a million just on football, so that explains their high spending a bit, but their only extra sports are M&W rowing and women's swimming and diving, so I think ultimately they just spend considerably more on all their sports.
All in all, UP finishing 3rd in the Commissioner's Cup is quite impressive considering how much less our total athletic expenses are than the other WCC schools.

Re: Kentucky Playing at the Rose Garden in November!
I added the MBB expense as a percent of total expense. LMU is lowest, and an outlier because they spend some much somewhere else. Three schools are clustered around 13.5%, three schools are around 17%, including UP with the third highest percentage. Then there's GU, which spends almost a quarter of their budget on MBB. The conference average spending on MBB not counting GU is almost exactly $2M. GU spends 50% more on MBB than they would if they spent the conference average.Stonehouse wrote:Thanks, Geez, for that time-suck of a link. An hour or so later:

My dad went to med school at UK. My attempt to trash talk with him ended with him saying "Even if the entire KY team goes to the pros this year the Pilots will never beat KY!" Gah.
