2010-11 Schedule Released! Empty 2010-11 Schedule Released!

Post by PilotNut Tue Aug 17, 2010 6:00 pm

I dont even know how to say what an awesome schedule this is! Congrats to Coach Rev and the Athletic Department on a great (and very challenging) schedule this year... but a growing program needs to play a schedule like this if we are going to make big strides and build a program.

Hosting a tourney in Chiles?! How great is that?! and not to mention home games (in Chiles Center) vs. UCSB, St. Louis, Boise St, Nevada, Utah... WOW! Shocked All this plus a home game vs. Kentucky in the Rose Garden! Cool

This schedule shows the commitment to continue to build a championship caliber program on the bluff... and really, how many other mid majors could and/or would schedule like this? We may take some lumps in the Win column, but our RPI will be strong, and it will help get our young guys ready for WCC play and the coming years. This schedule has to be a big recruiting tool, too... for Coach Rev to be able to show this schedule to a recruit has to be very powerful!

Quality Home Games, Including Five ESPN Contests, Highlight Men’s Hoops Schedule

PORTLAND, Ore. --- The University of Portland men’s basketball team will play 11 games against teams that advanced to postseason play last year, seven of which coming at home, while five regular season games will be televised nationally on the ESPN family of networks, the school announced with the official release of the 2010-11 schedule on Tuesday. Portland’s complete television schedule will be released at a later date.

In addition to the already released Nov. 19 game versus Elite Eight participant Kentucky at the Rose Garden, Portland will welcome UC-Santa Barbara (NCAA First Round), Nevada (NIT Second Round) and Saint Louis (CBI Finalist) as part of the non-conference home schedule.

Portland will also host the Athletes in Action Classic at the Chiles Center to open the regular season the weekend of Nov. 12-14. Participating teams include UW-Milwaukee, UC-Davis and Florida Atlantic. It is the first hosted regular season tournament at the Chiles Center in program history.

The non-conference home slate is completed with games against Boise State and Utah over the Holiday break.

“We are very excited about the quality of our non-conference schedule,” Portland head coach Eric Reveno said. “We have always tried to play a top home schedule for our fans to enjoy and at the same time we know that we need to play a challenging schedule to prepare us for the West Coast Conference. I think this schedule accomplishes both those goals “.”

Non-conference road games include three games in Seattle, highlighted by a Dec. 6 matchup with NCAA Sweet 16 participant Washington. The Pilots are also the featured opponent in the 2010 Cougar Hardware Classic at KeyArena against Washington State on Nov. 23 and return to KeyArena to face Seattle University on Feb. 5.

The remaining non-conference road games are at Idaho (Nov. 20), Montana (Dec. 3), Denver (Dec. 11) and Portland State (Dec. 18).

The Pilots open West Coast Conference play at perennial NCAA contender Gonzaga on Saturday, Jan. 8. Portland will return to the Chiles Center to host 2010 CIT participant Loyola Marymount on Thursday Jan. 13 on ESPN2. 2010 NCAA Sweet 16 upstart Saint Mary’s will visit Portland on Saturday, Jan. 29 on ESPNU.

Portland’s annual home game versus Gonzaga will be on Thursday, Feb. 3 on ESPN2, while the Pilots’ final regular season televised game will be against San Francisco on Thursday, Feb. 17 on ESPNU.

The WCC Tournament will return to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on March 4-7 with both semifinals and the championship game on the ESPN family of networks.

Portland is coming off of a banner year in which it tied a school Division I record with 21 wins and was invited to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) for the second consecutive season. The Pilots return six players to this year’s team, including All-WCC honorable mention seniors Jared Stohl and Luke Sikma. Stohl led the nation in three-point field goal percentage last year (.478), while Sikma is the league’s top returner in field goal percentage (.563) and rebounding (7.5). Three-year starting center Kramer Knutson is also back to help lead a team which will feature seven freshmen and a sophomore junior college transfer.

Season tickets are on-sale now through the Pilot Box Office at (503) 943-7525. Prices range from $124 to $280. Single game tickets for the Kentucky game are on-sale now through ComcastTix.com, while tickets for the Gonzaga game will go on-sale Monday, Jan. 4 at 11a.m. All other single game tickets go on-sale on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. through all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com, over the phone at (800) 745-3000 or in-person at the Pilot Box Office. Would be nice if the big Oregon schools would grow a pair and play us again. But a pretty tasty schedule either way.

I just wrote it all down on my calendar. Athletics did a great job working the Pilot games in the Chiles Center tournament around the first and second rounds of the women's soccer playoffs. You can catch both, no problems.

(Well, you'll have to walk a little more briskly to the T-Room and back, but exercise is good...)

I like the mix in this schedule this year. It looks like a good schedule for the type of team we have this year. No killer Anaheim Clasic this year with the 2nd place team in the NCAA tourney, West Virgina, and the other top 20 teams. Yet some tough tests in the tourney and early season easy, difficult, and "killer" games to hopefully prepare for another good WCC regular season.

We will sure find out how much the new guys can contribute to the team this year in addition to Jarred,Luke,Kramer, and Jason plus Nem with this early OOC Rolling Eyes

The Ducks released their schedule: http://www.goducks.com/SportSelect.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=500&SPID=235&SPSID=4294

They play Duke at the Rose Garden November 27. Can't actually play the Pilots, but can't be outdone by them either I suppose... Laughing

Matt Knight arena opens January 13 against USC. Their non-conference opponents are:
North Dakota State
Denver
UCSB
San Jose State
Texas Southern
Duke (@ RG)
Missouri
Portland State*
Willamette (Road trip for Rob's Jacket?)
Jacksonville State
@Virginia
Idaho

That's one true road game. You put that next to the schedule the Pilots put together and I give Rev and Larry Williams a lot of credit for taking on some challenging opponents.

*Oh, but they'll play Portland State. Wanna bet on whether they'll come up to return that game?

I'm sure they had to do a 2 for 1 deal with Duke to get that game, probably Virginia, too.

BTW, did I miss the point at which the Geez became an official "Pilot Nation Legend"? Was there a celebration?

Got 'em right where we want 'em.

Willamette was actually the first team to ever play the Ducks at Mac Court, so it's cool that we're playing there in its last year.
