Re: BYU to WCC in 2010-11
Perhaps like most conference affiliations, this one is about money; I would like to believe the WCC is not all about money, but then I may be naive on that. BYU is focused on its football program and revenue, not on its affililation with the WCC. It appears too that BYU will affiliate with the WAC in non-WCC sports. Our affiliation with BYU may change as quickly as it began, given the reasons for BYU to do this. I am not certain whether that is a bad thing?
The point of prior posts, that the we are bringing in a giant compared to us, and obviously one focused on its football program, makes for an uneasy alliance. I wonder how recepitive the WCC is to adding Seattle and Denver now-- because they are natural fits, with some identity/self image similarities.
The headline from the Salt Lake City Tribune reflects BYU's focus, the WCC a footnote of sorts:
http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/cougars/50197201-88/byu-football-conference-west.html.csp
I think we may need to hear more about the revenue sharing arrangement to determine if it is beneficial. I think we also need to consider how long BYU is likely to be a member--and on that there are many possibilities.
They will be competitive and that part will be fun.
Another note from the Tribune commenting on the affiliation:
http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/cougars/50198463-88/conference-west-basketball-byu.html.csp

Re: BYU to WCC in 2010-11
If the B12-2 comes calling, BYU is gone. As Gary Patterson said, if you think going independent is the way to the BCS, you're kidding yourself. Won't take long for BYU to realize that they aren't Notre Dame.wrv wrote:

Re: BYU to WCC in 2010-11
Jon Wilner LINK has some thoughts on this:
* It’s tough imagine a better fortnight for West Coast Conference or its third-year commissioner, Jamie Zaninovich. All he did, with some outside-the-box thinking, was transform his conference.
He’s the clear leader in the Hotline’s highly unofficial “2010 Western Region Commissioner’s Challenge,” with a slim edge on Larry Scott (we still don’t know how lucrative the Pac-12’s TV deal will be) … a sizable lead over Karl Benson (did the best he could with what he had to offer) … and a huge advantage on Craig Thompson (more below).
* What’s next for the WCC? Will it expand to become a 10 team league … and find a travel partner for BYU?
You don’t expand just to expand — the right fit has to be available. Is Seattle, Pacific or Denver, the right fit?
The WCC has been exploring its expansion options for more than a year and didn’t see reason to invite any of those teams, so why jump now?
Remember, every team you add means two more conference games, which means two fewer non-conference games.
That’s OK if the additions are two conference dates with BYU, because that helps your RPI. But you don’t want to add two conference games against a RPI 150+ team and thereby lose the opportunity to play two non-conference games against, say, RPI 50-100 teams.
* By the way: The fact that the WCC had explored expansion over the past 12-18 months is one of the key reasons it was able to corral the Cougars.
The league office had mock schedules for a nine- and 10-team league at the ready. When BYU became available, Zaninovich was able to present models to the BYU administration to convince them of the viability of joining the WCC.

So what about the BYU programs that the WCC does not sponsor (i.e. gymnastics, swimming, and track and field)? Where will those teams end up?

Hmmm, I suppose we are going to have to sketch out a new WCC logo... the state of Utah will be hard to get in the current version...

No but seriously, i wouldn't be upset if they retouched the existing logo, I mean it's alright, but other than the stars/coast design it's kinda blah....

There's a guy in Portland who did the Pac 10/12 logo. Or if you really want to make a splash there's this group in Hattiesburg Mississippi who just did a logo for a new MLS team...

Hahahhaha, I wasn't going to make a crack about that... but... I mean if you have a chance to have your logo designed by the same guys who did the Memphis Grizzlies and Tampa Bay Lighnting, you jump at the chance...

Turns out that we have BYU-TV on Comcast here in Portland/SW Wash. Channel 234. Looks like another opportunity to see Pilots on the tube (er, flat screen, I guess).

Yeah, my best friend and I have watched some pretty entertaining stuff on there over the years. That's how we discovered that BYU's men's soccer team competes in the PDL, not the NCAA.

Thks for the programming update...Another night I have to restrain myself in front of the ol 51" Plasma...Its a tough life but someone has to do it , right?? I still will miss the bad seats, popcorn, and live "Pep" band experience of the Chiles or the Marriot Center though....
BYU plays no athletic contest's on Sunday, believe me we dealt with it here in Mesa (2nd largest LDS temple in the World here, and no Geez & DTR we don't still practice multiple wives or angle length dresses except on Sunday here in Mesa......hmm)

Re: BYU to WCC in 2010-11
I'm not so sure that another team is in the offing, though I think Denver makes sense as a travel partner and as a new TV market.
Before BYU, the conference had decided to delay expanding, I think because the economy tanked and the didn't want to extend themselves in that climate without an added revenue plan. BYu was ano brainer, because it is sure to add revenue to the conference.
Things have changed a bit, but the economy is still tanked. I think they might try waiting a couple years at least.
The WCC presidents are a very cautious bunch.

Yeah, the comish needs to get a slow-down young Stanford pup device planted in his head sometimes from the wily veterans...the UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTS.....Thank goodness for wisdom and experience......a great check and balance to young pups like Rev., Z, and Mesas fav,, sic, AD at UP when their fine education is getting way ahead of common sense, lol. Its kinda neat to watch all the action, just sometimes wonder if some of these"golden boys" learn from their mistakes our if their golden boy educations and their egos try pass it off......"somebody else f'd up not me the golden boy from Stanford, or Notre Dame.
Congrats you legend

The Mountain West takes another hit, as TCU announced it is moving to the Big East.

MWC is hosed. They'd be in great shape if everyone had stayed, and they added BSU.

The MWC is transforming into the WAC. It's losing BYU, Utah and TCU. It is gaining Boise St, Nevada, and Fresno St. The WAC is turning into . . . ???

For football, Big West for all other sports. The rest of the conference is UC/Cal St schools with tight budgets so the travel will not be easy on them.RiseUP wrote:And now Hawaii is joining the MWC now...

Don't look now, but, as of today BYU is currently #1 in RPI in men's basketball:

I don't expect it to continue as the Big East schedule plays out...and the big boys of Louisville, UConn, Syracuse, Notre Dame, and Georgetown battle it out. But, still...
