Re: Other Scores - Week 8
Oops, I think you're using the NC-Soccer composite schedule that has teams' 2009 URPI rankings. You need to go to another of NC-Soccer's pages to bring up a composite schedule with the current 2010 URPI rankings. Still, they're all important games.
Re: Other Scores - Week 8
Oops! The link says 2010 but obviously those rankings are not current. I fixed it in my original post. Thanks!
Re: Other Scores - Week 8
I'm listening to the ND-UConn game on the web.
0-0 in the 68th
It's very entertaining. The Ucann keeper is having a career day. I can't imagine the 0-0 score will hold, though. Henderson is getting TONS of chances in the box

Jinxed it. Henderson outfought players and scored from close in.

Haha
Uconn ties it up with 2:00 left in regulation.
it's a new game. well, except that they have been running around for an hour and a half...

End of first overtime. The completely objective UConn announcers claim the Huskies outplayed the pugilist Celts.
the phrase "flashes of brilliance" was used.
(they outshot ND 3-1 in the first overtime.)

Final:
ND 1 : 1 UConn
a good result for UP, as a contender for a #1 slot had its RPI drop by .02

Cal 3, UW 2.
Cal was up 2-1 at 89:00, but UW tied it at 89:18, only to have Cal score at 89:56.

Re: Other Scores - Week 8
In the results that make you smile category...
Oregon State beat USC tonight 1-0 and are running their string to 10-1-1
Their ARPI isn't so good at 55, but a couple more wins might get them close to tournament range. We need a host partner.
UCLA is next.
Go Beav's!!!

Re: Other Scores - Week 8
The RPI gods have favored us a bit the last couple of days
teams we have played that have won Thursday or Friday include
Gonzaga (Though they beat Pepperdine, who we play next)
TAMU
Penn State
OK State
SMU
Syracuse (though they beat Rutgers)
CAL (though they beat Washington)
Stanford
All these help our RPI.
teams that lost?
Portland State
Wisconsin
Oregon
Northridge
and of course, the aforementioned UW and Rutgers
Penn state and Wisconsin play tomorrow. I don't think it matters who wins.
Biggest disappointment?
UW.
we need a host partner.

Re: Other Scores - Week 8
Here's a thought about which of our opponents we want to win when two of them are playing each other. We get the highest bonus points for having had a good result (win or tie) against a team ranked 1-40 in the URPI. We get the next highest points for a good result against a team ranked 41-80. So, we want the result that is most likely to maximize the Pilots' bonus points.

Loyola Marymount lost to Gonzaga (and us) this weekend and fell out of the top 40, costing us bonus points. Yesterday, we had 7 wins against top-40 teams, more than anyone else and on track to end up with more than anyone else. Now, unless LM or SD can get back into the top 40, UNC will end likely up with as many top-40 wins as us.
UPSF previously posted that we might as well root for UNC because they are almost certain to get a #1 seed anyway. Here's why I'd still like to see someone take UNC down a notch. But I don't know if it is realistic. In standard tournament bracketing, the overall #1 and overall #2 teams are bracketed so that they cannot meet until the finals. O ye historians, is NCAA soccer committed to that rule, or not? I'd rather we didn't meet Stanford until the finals. So I would hope to end up with higher ARPI than UNC, which won't happen unless they lose at least once more. I assume the ACC tourney counts toward RPI, right? Since they only meet top teams in that tourney, their RPI will just keep climbing unless they lose or tie, preferably more than once. And I suppose advancing on PKs in their tourney is a tie for RPI purposes? Does anyone know?
A good case in point from today, on how RPI is skewed too much in favor of simply scheduling tough teams, and not enough in favor of beating them: the Beavers creamed UCLA today, 3-0. Beavers are 11-1-1, Bruins are 9-5-1. Which is the better team? Beavers are #37, Bruins are #14.
