Re: Pilots @ Seattle U 2/5 7:10 PM
Is there a game today???
Seriously, this is an important game just to re-group after an emotional loss. Seeing the look on Luke's face after the game, he obviously knew that we let that one slip away. It's over. We learned from it, and now we need to go play the rest of our schedule.
I'm a believer now more than ever that our wins come from our defense and rebounding. The zags were able to make their run because we had some defensive lapses where they got easy buckets, and a couple of offensive rebounds for them. When we play tough D and rebound, we're able to get out in transition and get open looks or get to the bucket. Let's get back to that tonight and throttle the Chieft.....err, Redhawks

You have to remember the Redhawks have put up a fight against us the last couple years, having a second half lead both times. Two years ago they led with under 7 minutes left, were tied with 3:30 to go, and were in it until the end. Last year they had the lead with about 13 minutes left before we went on a 15-2 run to go ahead for good. Keep in mind those games were both in Portland, where we've won 35 of 40. Away from the Chiles Center we're just 4-6 this year, albeit against good competition. So while I'm hoping for a comfortable win, I wouldn't be shocked to see a close game.

Completely agree. But I'm hoping for an intensely focused defensive effort that will help us build a steady lead and demoralize SU.

Well this year they don't have Charles Garcia.... (Thanks unscrupulous agents!)
But seriously, I would never sleep on this game, after 2 emotional contests this has "trap game" written all over it. That said, I expect the seniors to take control and exert their frustrations on the court.

The Pilots are hoping to bounce back from Thursday's 67-64 home loss to rival Gonzaga that snapped Portland's 19-game winning streak at the Chiles Center. "We've got to turn the page on this one, as tough as that may be, and go get after it in Seattle," Sikma said. "We've got to get back to work and get our mojo going again."
Sikma had 14 points and 16 rebounds in Thursday's loss to the Bulldogs, giving him six double-doubles in the last eight games and 11 on the seasons ... Stohl scored 16 points against Gonzaga and moved up to ninth place among Portland's all-time scorers with 1,274 career points, passing Floyd Banks (1,262) and Quentin Braxton (1,266). Stohl needs eight points to overtake Paul Gloden for eighth place, and is 11 points away from passing Matt Houle for seventh on the list.

Ha! Stretch Braxton and Tiny Banks were the stars during my years on the Bluff. And Paul Gloden was the star of the first Pilot teams I can remember watching. Yeesh, that was a long time ago.... I am sure Jared is creating a lot of memories for current students and young fans.

Wow, that was a while back. That makes all of the old timer stories about UP that I hear seem like recent history. One of my favorite old-timer stories was told to me by Pat H., CSC, who said that many years ago a certain bar in the Portland area refused to serve a UP student because he was African American, so, he and all of his UP buddies decided to take their business to the Twilight Room. The rest is history! Many many years of business and ceiling signings by almost every student at UP as a Senior tradition now... Big business mistake!!!

Portland Travels to Seattle for Final Non-Conference Game
Portland (16-7, 4-4 WCC) at Seattle (8-14)
February 5, 2011 • 7:00 PM • Seattle, Wash. (KeyArena)
TV: FSN Northwest
Radio: 800 AM (KPDQ)
Live Audio: PortlandPilots.com
Series: SEA leads 73-29
Last Meeting: POR 98, SEA 81 (11/17/09 at Portland)
This Week in Pilots Hoops…
The Portland Pilots (16-7, 4-4 WCC) look to bounce back after suffering their first loss this season at the Chiles Center, a 67-64 defeat to the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday. Portland will make the short trip north to the Emerald City and face the Seattle University Redhawks (8-14) on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Pilots dealt the Redhawks a 98-81 defeat last season at the Chiles Center.
Game Coverage
The game will be televised live on FSN Northwest with Tom Glasgow, Francis Williams and Jen Mueller on the call. All Portland basketball games are aired live on the radio on 800 AM (KPDQ) with a 30-minute pregame show. Bill Johnson and Jason Brough will provide the commentary on Saturday.
Portland Briefly...
• The Pilots had their 19-game Chiles Center winning streak snapped on Thursday with a 67-64 loss to Gonzaga. Portland led 17-4 early on before the Bulldogs took a 10-point lead midway through the second period. The Pilots closed to within two points in the final minutes, but Gonzaga made free throws to secure the win.
• Senior F Luke Sikma had 14 points and 16 rebounds for his league-leading 11th double-double of the season. Senior G Jared Stohl and junior G Nemanja Mitrovic added 16 points each.
• Senior C Kramer Knutson made his 112th career start on Thursday to tie Dionn Holton (1995-98) for the all-time school record.
• Freshman PG Tim Douglas scored 26 points against then-No. 24 Saint Mary’s last Saturday and added 14 points and six assists against San Diego to earn WCC Co-Player of the Week honors. Douglas is just the fifth freshman in WCC history to earn the honor twice in one season.
• Portland is rated No. 56 nationally in the latest NCAA RPI released on Jan. 31.
• UP is No. 12 in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25.
• The Pilots are No. 3 nationally in team 3-point percentage (.428).
• Stohl moved into ninth place on UP’s career top 10 scoring list (1,274 points).
• Sikma ranks 10th nationally in rebounds (10.9).
• Mitrovic is No. 2 nationally in three-point percentage (.485) and Stohl is No. 11 (.455).
• Stohl (70) and Mitrovic (66) have combined to make 136 three-pointers, the second highest total of any teammates in the nation behind BYU’s Jimmer Fredette and Jackson Emery (137).
• Portland’s 56 wins over the last three years are the most of any three-year stretch since the Pilots joined Division I for the 1958-59 season.
• Portland is coming off of back-to-back postseason appearances and tied a school record with 21 wins last year. Head coach Eric Reveno welcomes eight newcomers to the roster, including seven true freshmen.
About Seattle
• The Redhawks are an independent at the Division I level and former member of the WCC, formerly known as the West Coast Athletic Conference (WCAC).
• Seattle U is returning from a four-game road trip which concluded with an 81-64 loss at Loyola Marymount on Monday.
• Aaron Broussard paces Seattle with 15.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, while freshman Sterling Carter adds 13.2 points.
• The Redhawks have quality wins over Oregon State (83-80) and at Virginia (59-53).
• Seattle has also defeated Idaho and has lost to the following common Pilot opponents: San Francisco (97-76), UC Davis (80-58), Portland State (83-76) and Pepperdine (84-64).
• The Redhawks like to play a fast pace, but shoot under 40 percent from the field and just 28 percent from the three-point line. Seattle does force nearly 18 turnovers per game.
• Head coach Cameron Dollar, a former UCLA point guard and assistant coach at Washington, is in his second year at the helm.
• Seattle U finished last season with a 17-14 overall record, but lost leading scorer Charles Garcia to the professional ranks.
• Seattle leads the all-time series with Portland by a 79-23 margin, although the Pilots have won nine of the last ten meetings.

I will be on, Matty, RJ, Indiana,Geez,Nut, Stoney , PPT,etc..... roll call starting at 6:45 west coast time...(why don't you people on the west coast or at least Oregon and WA just move your clocks ahead???) I'll provide plenty o OFFENSIVE behavior,,,but I promise I don't taunt the opposition , just cheer the Pilots on to victory. I'm in agreement about it being a sleeper "trap" game ala Idaho game last year after our first national ranking in 50 years .

Very sloppy from both teams, with 20+ turnovers each. Lots of forced passes over the top that had little or no chance of connecting. Of course, that must have been the plan, because there were a lot of others that worked. 17 wins in the book, with 6 games to go until the tournament.

U.g.l.y. But a win on the road is a win...
Hopefully we got all of the turnovers out of us... we cannot do that again next week.
Glad to see the freshman get some minutes, including Thieleke...

It is cool that Luke Sikma is 3 rebounds away from being UP's all time leader. We're witnessing Pilot history with the senior years of Sikma and Stohl.
