That was the first time I've been impressed with J Bailey. I liked his fire and fight last night. We could really use productive minutes out of him, even if only to give the other guys a rest. Good to see him play well! I'd love to see him work his way into the rotation - you can't have too many big bodies to run out there if they're all playing well!Woodless! wrote:The Bailey brothers played outstanding last night.

Lots of energy in the building last night! How about that old guy who thought he won the BINGO game running down to the scorer's table. He sure is quick.

Did you see the 3 people he knocked over on the way down?!
I hear there was a bait-and-switch, too... they chose the winner via drawing. Who won the trip, btw?

Can you believe it? What kind of Bingo game is that? The whole idea is to be the FIRST to fill out your card. Drawings are for the lottery.

Re: Sata Clara, January 5/Pepperdine January 7
That was a glorified raffle. I enjoyed it though. Dude in front of me had about 8 cards
Maybe next time, make it slightly tougher. I think I had 4 spaces un-checked on my card and I doubt there was a single card without a bingo.
Spaces like 'Band Plays Fight Song,' 'Media Timeout' and 'Pilots Get a Rebound' are pretty silly.

I'm not denying that Tim was hit. He certainly was. But, if you watched the replay very carefully, then you would notice that it took him a minute to register the whole "I just got hit in the face!" idea.
Also, it was a very good thing that this game was on TV, or I do not know that the refs would have had a monitor to consult 3-4 times.

Cason would not have received a technical without footage to review...

How was the crowd? Conflict keep me from going, and watching the CSN broadcast on DVR, the EACC looked pretty empty. One end zone looked to have one guy there. Announced attendance was around 1,400. Realistic?blacksheep wrote:Lots of energy in the building last night!

Re: Sata Clara, January 5/Pepperdine January 7
I wouldn't say it was a huge crowd, but considering the students where gone and the Blazers were playing the Lakers, it was good.
I'm not buying their attendance numbers. I don't think anyone who comes in through the Pilot Club entrance is even counted. They have never checked my ticket.
Also, there was a good crowd at the pasta pregame. If I could just get a glass of beer or wine, all would be right with the world.

I think the attendance numbers are just the number of tickets sold. That would include all the season ticket holders, even if they don't show up.

Five Players Reach Double Figures in 84-74 Win Over Santa Clara
PORTLAND, Ore. --- Sophomore forward Ryan Nicholas scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Portland Pilots to an 84-74 victory over the Santa Clara Broncos Thursday night before 1,446 at the Chiles Center. Portland had five players reach double figures as the team snapped a seven-game losing streak with the win.
In addition to Nicholas’ second double-double of the year, sophomore Tim Douglas added 11 points and a career-high eight assists. Senior Nemanja Mitrovic also finished with 11 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Freshman guard David Carr finished with a season-best 11 points and freshman Thomas van der Mars had 10 points and seven rebounds in just 15 minutes of action.
It was a balanced attack by the Pilots as eight of the nine players to see the court scored. Redshirt freshman forward John Bailey had the best game of his career with seven points, five rebounds and a blocked shot in 10 minutes.
Portland (4-11, 1-1 WCC) jumped out to an early double-digit lead after a pair of Nicholas free throws made it 22-11. The Pilots would extend the lead to as much as 18 points late in the period. A dunk by John Bailey with 15 seconds left before the halftime buzzer ignited the crowd and gave Portland a 44-27 halftime lead.
The lead would grow to as much as 21 points with 6:52 remaining in the game as Nicholas capped a 9-2 run with a pair of free throws and a lay-up. The Broncos (8-6, 0-1) would rally to pull within seven on a three-pointer by Brandon Clark with 25 seconds remaining, but the Pilots would hold on for the win.
Portland finished the game at 51 percent shooting, including a 17-for-29 in the first half. The Pilots held Santa Clara to 39 percent shooting and just 7-for-29 in the first period. Portland also gained a 44-27 rebounding margin and dished out a season-high 17 assists.
Niyi Harrison led the Broncos with 19 points off the bench, while Clark added 16. Sophomore guard Evan Roquemore finished with 15 points. Junior Kevin Foster, the WCC’s leading scorer at 18.7 points per game entering the contest, finished with 12 points on 4-of-14 shooting.
The Pilots will return to the Chiles Center on Saturday to host the Pepperdine Waves at 5 p.m. It will be Military Appreciation night and all active and retired members of the military will receive free admission and discounted tickets for family members. Tickets are still available through all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com, or through the Pilot Box Office (M-F, 11 am – 5 pm). Tickets can also be purchased at the door 90 minutes prior to tip-off. The game will also be televised live on Comcast SportsNet Northwest and on the radio on True Talk 800 AM.

Dude, you need to tell us when you're going to miss a game. Some young guy was in your seat and at least 1,400 fans were asking, "where's 7567?"up7587 wrote:Conflict keep me from going, and watching the CSN broadcast on DVR, the EACC looked pretty empty.

I really like JB! He's tough and strong (as shown last night when he pulled one SCU player over his back), but most of all he has good, quick hands and can score in close. He may lack the stamina and athleticism of KB, but for 15 minutes a game he can be a solid player. Last night both Baileys slammed dunked!Woodless! wrote:The Bailey brothers played outstanding last night.
KB is a quiet threat. Earlier in the season he thought he could take the team on his back as he did in high school; now he's a TEAM player, looking for the open man and not attempting the (usually) impossible. He still doesn't move around the court much, and plays are not designed through him, BUT both Baileys are FRESHMEN!!!!!

I like that KB held the ball and didn't try to charge the hoop in the second half. He showed good clock management skills.

I thought the team as a whole played unselfishly last night (17 assists!). There were many times a guy would drive, draw a defender, then find an open man for an ever better shot. There was also more patience instead of just throwing up the first halfway decent shot. I also liked how they were running a little last night.

Had play continued, I can see this line of reasoning, but there was no additional time off the clock after the score. If there had been, SCU couldn't have called a time out with UP in possession.
It's just like taking points back off the board on a charging foul that gets reviewed.
Coach Keating didn't bitch because he knew he got away with the points.
New rule: The possession should have ended with the offensive foul. If the possession resulted in points the points get taken off the board.
Can't remember how the possession ended? Well, you have a replay monitor, don't you?

PPT, thanks for staying up half the night to put an exclamation point on this controversy. Fortunately we won, and fortunately, for a few, there was no Las Vegas line on the game.PurplePrideTrumpet wrote: New rule: The possession should have ended with the offensive foul. Wow.
UP's last field goal except for David Carr's tre was with 9:33 left in the game and the Pilots still win the game!
Great defensive effort. The sequence with 13 minutes left where we blocked 3 shots, stole the ball, and went down the court and drew the foul was inspirational.

I'm definitely going to watch the replay at 11pm on CSNNW. Also, did you know they replayed the Santa Clara game a couple hours before showing the Pepperdine game live? Good exposure.

Re: Sata Clara, January 5/Pepperdine January 7
No need to look at the stats; it was another team effort. Not quite the ball movement we saw against SCU, but face it, PU's defense was a lot tougher.
You can tell we're in a recession, instead of 10 3's to get free chips and guac, it's now 7 -- and the guys did it!
KB got a little crazy at times tonight, but made up for it with clutch 3's and at least one block.
And JB! What great control of the ball off the fast-break, then a terrific pass to Nem for the lay-up.
David Carr played his best all around game of the season; a couple of threes and some very athletic ball control under some pressure toward the end.
Ryno, still the stud.
Thomas, not quite Kareem, but those were a couple of nice baby hooks; one from the right, and one from the left.

A great win to build some momentum... the team really seems to be playing better and recovering from the brutal OOC gauntlet...
Rev certainly shortened up the bench this weekend, primarily playing 8 players. Tanner Riley and Waterford saw only a few minutes...Good to see Rev deciding on a rotation.

Re: Sata Clara, January 5/Pepperdine January 7
If you look at just the stats you'd overlook Cason tonight. I thought he had a great game. Played lots of minutes and stayed out of the foul trouble he'd had trouble with this season. He got a couple blocks and disrupted the middle when he was in. He took up so much space Pepperdine's big men had trouble getting around him for open shots. He's coming along nicely.
The big moment for me was with 10 minutes to go. Pepperdine had cut it to 11, the shot clock was running out, and Nem hits a cold-blooded three way behind the line. That was when I thought we had this.
