Did someone say today is first day spring signing period?
Glad to see Pressley coming aboard. But any others? Doesn't appear that Garrett Jackson will become a Pilot. According to ESPN a recruit Pilots pursued before the early signing period, Josh Hearlihy, 6'7" forward, is no longer wanted by Utah though he signed with them in November--Coack K there is seeking to release him from the LOI after advising the young man that he was not wanted. Interesting. Concerning.

Re: Did someone say today is first day spring signing period?
I saw that about Hearlihy and looking at the Utah message boards it looks like Utah may have found a prospect they liked better, or at least that's what i would hope. I'm not sure if Rev and staff would still be interested unless they were comfortable with the current pg situation, which i don't think is the case or if he were so good that they couldn't pass him up.

I see our old friend , Keith Shamburger, who dropped us two years ago for San Jose State, is looking for more fertile areas. He is suppose to be a PG. What a turn coat.

Thanks for keeping us informed, Rev:
CoachReveno
We have 2 open scholarships for 2012-2013. We have 1 committed and feel close on the other. 1st one should sign in 2 days, due to logistics.

Re: Did someone say today is first day spring signing period?
The tweet implies that it is unlikely there will be other departures or that Rev, like many college programs and coaches, will pull a scholarship, even if certain student athletes are underperforming. I read that Utah did not renew scholarships for 6 players, on top of pulling a scholarship to a player that signed an LOI in November; and one wonders whether San Fransisco has adopted a similar policy.
The difference in handling these problems suggests something about Rev's essential decency and about his approach to his job, his life.
I am not sure how you value those kind of ethics.

Well said, wrv. We all love to win, or hate to lose, but we are never losers when we maintain high moral and ethical standards.wrv wrote:The difference in handling these problems suggests something about Rev's essential decency and about his approach to his job, his life.

BTW, from what I hear from an acquaintance who is an AAU coach in SOCAL, Josh Hearlihy always considered UP his second choice (apparently he had offers from at least Utah, UP, Wyoming, USD, and SCU) and is now considering moving north from North Hollywood, but how far north?
He also mentioned Josh did not play the second half of his senior year. I know some who grow very quickly develop knee problems, but I have not checked if this is the reason for Josh missing playing time.
Josh is definitely a wing, but he's skilled, smart, and a good student. If this is the way Rev goes, it means he's got some comfort level at the PG position that others don't share.

The ESPN quote on Hearlihy:
So, why would a kid sign an LOI early, if the school keeps shopping and rejects him when they find a better prospect?
For what it's worth, the Utah coach is getting ripped on at least one Utah board: Block U
Utah head basketball coach Larry Krystkowiak has asked signee Josh Hearlihy (North Hollywood, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) to opt out of his scholarship and look elsewhere, according to the L.A. Times.
"I was very excited about going to Utah when I signed my Letter of Intent in November," Hearlihy said in a statement released by Harvard-Westlake. "However, the coaching staff has reconsidered their commitment to me and has asked to be released from their obligation. I turned down scholarship offers and stopped exploring other options when I signed."
"Given the situation at Utah, I'm concerned about putting myself in an environment where I'm not wanted. It is still my dream to play college basketball and I will continue to work hard every day to make that dream a reality."
Hearlihy originally chose the Utes over Portland and Santa Clara in September.
So, why would a kid sign an LOI early, if the school keeps shopping and rejects him when they find a better prospect?

Why would a reputable NCAA institution offer a scholarship to a "kid" and then continue to shop as though it had no moral and legal obligation to the kid and had the scholarships available to seek more players? Maybe competition reveals character . . .
I think it is better that Mr. Hearlihy has been informed so early on that he is unwanted, but there should be a regulation limiting this behavior by academic institutions, privileged members of the august body of NCAA schools, where "kids" ostensibly go to get educated and learn something about how to deal with the vagaries of life. In fairness to Utah, though I strain to suggest this, we may not know the full story, at least I hope we don't.

The idea that shamwow turned his back on UP might be umm... Overstated.

Yea, sometimes I tend to understate, but our lack of interest in "Shambowwow" was supposed to be reflected in:

Well, some from Hollywood are still heading to Utah.........
From the Salt Lake Tribune today:

Point guard Brandon Taylor signed a National Letter of Intent on Wednesday to play for the University of Utah. A native of West Hollywood, Calif., the 5-foot-10 Taylor led Pacific Hills High School to a state championship this season.

Re: Did someone say today is first day spring signing period?
Here's an extract of a Yahoo Sports article about Josh Hearlihy, and an interesting speculation:
You can read the entire article at:http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/highschool-prep-rally/utah-basketball-pulls-scholarship-california-player-growth-related-185529935.htmlNow, with spring signing day upon the nation, there are few remaining opportunities for Hearlihy to find another Division I opening, and even less time to find that spot. As a result, the most likely future for Hearlihy may come at a prep school, where the teen would spend a year biding time to re-enter the Division I recruiting cycle. That's a harsh reality for a promising forward who seemed to have a bright Pac-12 future ahead of him just months earlier. No matter how it ends, the way Utah handled the situation certainly leaves a sour taste in plenty of mouths.

Re: Did someone say today is first day spring signing period?
So Rev's tweet yesterday about the two scholarships, one being a verbal commitment and close on the other has me thinking a lot. I did a little research and have come up with some names. My thought process was as follows:
As been stated many times a true pg is a huge need. So i only searched for guards that had some interest from UP previously. From there I cut the list down a little, the names I've come up with are:
Jalen Ward 5'11" Kent, WA
Jordan Belton 5'11" Hollister, CA
Isaiah Taylor 5'10" Albany, CA
Amadi Udenyi 5'10 Concord, CA
A few notes: each has some sort of youtube video i believe. I also don't think it would be impossible for the staff to nab a foreign player, they have a nack for getting some hidden gems late in the signing period. Also, Isaiah Taylor is Dorian's old teammate I believe. Again, this is all speculation, and probably has little to no actually value, but it's always fun to speculate right?

Re: Did someone say today is first day spring signing period?
I saw Amadi Udenyi play earlier in the year at De La Salle in Concord, and liked what I saw enough to drop Rev an email about him using some "Orange Express" recruiting comments:
As DTLegend said, "it probably has little to no actual value, but it's always fun to speculate right?"Amadi Udenyi is a smart and tough PG prospect who needs to work on his mid-range game, can sink the trey, can dish with consistency and can shut down the opponent’s best back court player. He should transition easily into a program which runs the back door offense since he’s been successfully leading his team in that very scheme. But he also wants to go where they get out and run when they get the chances.
Anyone know of a school which fits that mold?
This is what his AAU coach Phil Handy had to say about Amadi and his recruitment:
He is an extremely hard working kid on and off the court. He fully understands his potential and puts in a lot of time trying to improve daily. I see him as a mid-low major D1 talent. He is getting looks from American, Columbia, Pepperdine, Portland, USF, Princeton, Yale, Navy and a few other west coast schools. I believe he could play in the Pac-12!

Re: Did someone say today is first day spring signing period?
I watched a few DLS games this year and saw Amadi play.
Very strong and quick, plays with very good control, and shoots well.
DLS palys a very successful and disciplined scheme which does not always showplace some players skills.
This is the school and coach Ethan Niedermeyer ( UP), John Macarthur (Santa Clara) and Beua Levesque (St Mary's) played for.
Also, two current players on Cal Berkeley, and in recent years players on UC Santa Barbara, Princenton, Cal, UC Davis.

Well, there he goes again, making us get excited -- Rev's Tweet this morning:
(I'm sure the Stanford grad meant to say "accept", but it's not easy to tweet on the run at 6 in the morning!)Telling myself I wouldn,t even except a complimentary upgrade on flight to Dallas because it will make me soft for flight to Spain

Re: Did someone say today is first day spring signing period?
I read that Mark Few is flying to Poland to secure an LOI from a center--it's posted on the Don's board. If Few can fly to Poland to secure an LOI, our coach can well fly to Spain to do the same.
This appears to be Rev's second documented--via tweets-- trip to Spain, thus the likelihood of securing an LOI might be higher with each successive trip.
I am interested to know whether his connection with the Canarias Basketball Academy will play a part. If so, obviously we would be signing two players in two years from there: nice connection for Rev and the Pilots.
