Just happened to notice this line in the UP website notes for the CSUN game:
UP will be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of its first national title with a reunion during the Pilots’ game against San Diego State at Merlo Field on Oct. 7.
Anyone know anything? Seems to me 2002 was a pretty good year for UP Soccer. Very Happy

They've been announcing the reunion during home games for the last several weeks. I'm hoping that most of the players from that year's team will be there.

(If this year's team has any more injuries, perhaps they can sneak some alums into the lineup. Very Happy Do you think the Aztecs would notice if one of our players had a striking resemblance to Christine?)

Embarassed Thanks. My old ears rarely understand anything that comes from the LOUD (and unreadable) speakers at Merlo. If I were to sit in the middle, below or across from the press box, it would be fine, but as I stand to the side of the opponents goal during the games, I only hear noise when announcements are made.

Kids, take care of your hearing, someday you may need it.....

ATTENTION PILOT NATION - TRAFFIC ALERT!

Just a heads-up. The Portland Marathon is this Sunday, October 7th, and the route takes up most of Willamette Blvd. between the St. John's Bridge and Interstate Avenue. It passes right by UP and Merlo Field. Although Marathon folks are saying that most of the action will be over by late morning, with a game start time of 1:00pm Pilots fans would be well advised to consider alternate routes to reach UP to ensure they don't miss any of the opening ceremonies.

Drive down Portsmouth instead of down Willamette.

In past years it has not been a problem. The post race celebration downtown starts at 11:30 and the awards ceremonies are at 1:00. Unless there is a problem that causes a delay, most participants will be beyond UP by noon.

That being said, an alternate route is a prudent idea.

Current weather forecast on my phone says it is going to be 79 on Sunday. When is the last time we were still wearing shorts to games this far into the season?

San Diego State's record so far this year. They're currently #6 in the Adjusted RPI rankings. It's going to be a battle and, I'm guessing, a defensive battle:

8/22/2012 SanDiegoState 1 StFrancis 0

San Diego State defeated Boise State today 1-0, with a goal relatively late in the second half. It looks like the game was close, with Boise State maybe having slightly the better of the play but being unable to put a shot on goal. Notwithstanding the win, SDS currently sits at #7 in the Adjusted RPI (which is down a slot from yesterday).

Will probably discuss the game later, but wanted to say what a treat it was to see the 2002 ladies at halftime.

At the beginning of the introductions they introduced the winner of the just concluded Portland Marathon, Colleen Little. "Who," I asked someone, "Oh, it's COLLEEN SALISBURY," someone said.

Inspired by the memory of Clive, Colleen loves to run...from the Oregonian:
Runners in the Portland Marathon have names written on their race bibs. Most go with their given name, but a few opt for a nickname, such as “Boss Man,” or “Geezer.”

Colleen Little of Lake Oswego went for inspiration, as she had “Clive” written on her bib. The late Clive Charles, the man who once coached Little in women’s soccer at the University of Portland, drove her to victory in the marathon Sunday morning in downtown Portland.

Little, 29, was overcome with emotion as she crossed the finish line in a time of 2 hours, 51 minutes, 35 seconds.
Little played for Charles in 2002 when the Pilots won their first national championship. A year later, Charles passed away, on Little’s birthday.

“Every time I compete, I compete in remembrance of him,” Little said. “He taught all of us to be good athletes, but also to be amazing people. His suffering pushes me toward everything I do.”

Little was kicking off a busy day with the marathon. After winning and cooling down, Little headed for the University of Portland, where the school honored the 2002 national championship team during Sunday’s game against San Diego State. Little, whose maiden name was Salisbury, also played on the Pilots’ 2005 national title team.

SDSU are good. Fast to the ball, good movement off the ball and after 20 minutes when they were up 2-0 it looked like they were going to slaughter the Pilots.

But this team of our ours has heart. Amanda F was tripped in the box and the ref actually gave it, which is a surprise in hindsight because his decisions were almost totally unpredictable. "Robust" challenges saw no call, and inoccuous bumps resulted in fouls. Anyway, AF scored with a very confident PK sending the GK the wrong way. Then not long after that Taylor epitomizes the energizer bunny as she does and jumped up at the far post on a corner and volleyed the ball in. Very tasty goal!

Game on. In the second half Pilots had a couple of good chances one-on-one with the GK but unfortunately neither Emily S or Noelle LaP could finish them. SDSU won the game with an unchallenged header at a corner. Disappointing but it was a close game and way better than it looked earlier in the day.

Rumors that Micaela is done for the season with a knee injury. Hope it's not so but fear the worst. Admired the spirit shown today but hard to imagine a good outcome for the rest of the year without her. Too much to ask of the number of players left healthy, especially if Ellen P is not back.

Beautiful afternoon for a ball game. I thought the Pilots played very well after the first 20 minutes during which they seemed tentative. "Totally unpredictable" is an understatement for the officiating. I don't know what the rule is for stopping the clock for injuries, but twice he neglected to do it when it seemed like he should have. The second time one of the linesmen got his attention about it and he put time back on the clock.

I like the starting lineup with Kendall at left mid with Hayley and Taylor to play outside back. Hayley deserves to be in the game, and the team needs both Kendall and Taylor for 90 minutes. This arrangement puts all the most experienced and strongest defenders on the field. It also helps the attack as Kendall can stay upfield and torment the other team's back line. I also like how the Pilots went with 3 backs late in the game and added Emily as an attacker to go for the tying goal. Seeing the 2002 championship team on the field again was a blast.
