Concordia @ Pilots 10/27
It may be JUST an exhibition game, and the score and statistics won’t count, but it IS a Pilots basketball game!
(The game is this SATURDAY at 7, NOT Sunday as originally scheduled).
Concordia, also playing its first game of the season, is lead by Vancouver’s Adam Herman, who last year in his collegiate debut scored 26 points against the Pilots in the Pilots’ 81-72 win. Herman went on to average close to 20 ppg for the year…so he’s a legitimate threat.
Many will recognize Concordia’s point guard, Tony Holton. Tony was a familiar face around the Chiles Center for a number of years and took over Concordia’s PG spot half way into his freshman year last season. His assist to turnover rate is outstanding and he’s scored in double digits on a number of occasions.
Except for being an exhibition win, you may not want to recall last year’s game for a number of reasons, but our 3/20 three point shooting and 20 turnovers were an unfortunate indication of the season ahead.
The big difference in our lineup this year is at the PG….our point guard last year was Tim Douglas; Derrick Rogers did not score in 8 minutes of play as his backup…Douglas scored 15 as I recall.
UP’s highlight last year against Concordia was Barker’s 18 points, and the combined 35 rebounds by Barker, van der Mars, and Nicholas….now that’s a lot of missed shots!
Oh, we’ll probably win, but can we avoid another sloppy game?

Re: Concordia @ Pilots 10/27
Some basic things I'd like to see from tomorrow's game:
1. No more than 15 turnovers
2. 70% or better at the line
3. Scoring from the PG position
4. A reliable 3-point threat
What is everyone else looking for?

I’d like to see much the same as you, I think, but with a lot of emphasis on the PG position.NoPoNeighbor wrote:Some basic things I'd like to see from tomorrow's game:

I can't say I've been that impressed with Derrick's play in practice, and I think he too is disappointed to this point. It's his job to lose, so he just has to play with confidence and NOT TRY TO DO TOO MUCH. So far, that is what I've been seeing….everyone is trying to do too much instead of settling into a rhythm.
I'd also like to see some clamp-down defense on Concordia's Herman, just to show we can do it.
Three point shooting from Riley and Carr.
Finally, it will be nice to see the team get in some sort of rhythm before Rev starts making multiple substitutions....just so the players (and fans) know it can be done!

You can make it to the T-Room and back in 15 minutes if Mrs. Geez is driving....or I bet you can visit one of the rooms in Villa!Geezaldinho wrote:NoPoNeighbor wrote:

Will the Alumni House be open for business? OTOH, unless OK has blown out ND by half-time, I don't think I'll be arriving early anyway.

I don't recall seeing this in previous years. Our men's basketball team was introduced to the soccer crowd at last night's game against PU.....good PR; I hope others took notice.

Now to see how they fair against better competition next week. I'm sure the coaches have lots of teaching moments to use from this game.

To cover some of the points raised here:
We'll know more about the PG situation when Rodgers comes back. Based on how he played in the scrimmage I still think he's the first choice.
Did not realize there were only 13 TOs. Seemed like there were more but that's a good start.
Riley and Carr had some good shots from outside and that's a good sign.
Barker looked good, especially in the second half after he got a few minutes under his belt. It'll be a big plus to have him back.
Kevin Bailey looked even more athletic than he was last year. He'll be fun to watch. Thieleke made some good plays as well.
Overall I saw a lot of good things tonight and the team identified some areas to work on.

Re: Concordia @ Pilots 10/27
A good TEAM effort this evening, it was much better than last year’s opener and all the freshmen got some minutes.
Turnovers (13) were really not an issue as they came from players who should not have the same problem during the season. Ahern will probably redshirt, and Nicholas and van der Mars will be solid.
Three point shooting (5-13) was fine….too bad Thieleke has yet to develop an outside shot when being pressured.
The Pilots obviously dominated inside against inferior competition tonight so it wasn’t a true test, but it was great to see Barker back on the court….I’m sure van der Mars was VERY happy to have a little time to recuperate during a game. John Bailey looks so much better this year except for his shooting….give him time (I hope).
Carr played 31 minutes at PG, and was much improved, but we’ll just have to see how he does against stiffer competition. I think Derrick will take over again when he heals, and will be the stronger defender and ball handler….but can he score? After Carr and Rodgers we really don’t have anyone at PG (yet). Ahern shows wonderful leadership, but based upon this evening, he (and Ehlers) will need to sit a year. The NCAA game is still too fast for Reinfelds, he’s not being groomed as a PG, and he’s still got a long way to go on defense….but he’s an ox and can really go to the rim. I think he’ll eventually be too good to keep out of the lineup…..the staff just has to figure out his role.
Area that needs the most work after one exhibition game --- DEFENSE!
Next week’s competition will be strong, and Rev will have to give his starters some extra minutes to jell as a unit….I think they’ll do fine.

Without having attended the game (so, just based on the box score...), I have two questions... 1) We heard that Rodgers was injured and Mossman has left the team. But indeed, what about Cason? 2) Looks like we didn't get the ball in the hands of the centers very much. 3 attempts for VDM, 4 for Barker. There was good production from the guards and from Nicholas, but why didn't we get the ball down low to the big guys more?

Dorian Cason was dressed, but never entered the game. Don't know if he was ailing, or in the doghouse.

Re: Concordia @ Pilots 10/27
1) Dorian is slowly working himself back into playing condition after a bout of bronchitis and a concussion sustained in practice. If he continues to progress he'll play in the next game. As Dorian is considered Ryan's primary backup, his minutes may be limited in any case.NoPoNeighbor wrote:Without having attended the game (so, just based on the box score...), I have two questions... 1) We heard that Rodgers was injured and Mossman has left the team. 2) Most of the points scored by the centers were put-backs from offensive boards. It is/was definitely a wing/guard oriented offense with very few passes to the post. The centers did a wonderful job of rebounding and making the outlet pass so the offense could be run up-tempo. I guess to answer your question directly, the reason we didn't get the ball down low is because our size and speed advantage in the backcourt meant we didn't have to.

Yes, and they actually did some cheers. I liked it. Pretty good numbers in the student section too.
