To be clear, you mean Dorian Cason, not David Carr.
I haven't heard anything other than 'suspended indefinitely,' which is intentionally as vague as it gets.

Whenever the word "indefinitely" is used in that phrase it can not be good, whatever it is. He could very well be done at the University when that language is used.

Nah, it just means that whatever he did or didn't do falls under FIRPA ( family rights privacy act). It could be anything starting with missing study halls or poor grades. He might have to hit the books. I doubt we are talking Heytvelt here...

Thanks, Geez, good explanation. I didn't quite know how to make a statement and still comply with FIRPA.Geezaldinho wrote:goldhelmet wrote:

The Feds and the NCAA do not allow "official" disclosure of the type of information everyone is asking for...that is why you are not seeing answers to your questions. 'Nuff said.

Re: Anybody know what the story is with DC?
I'm well aware of the privacy laws , and this may end up being a temporary
situation. But my experience following collegiate teams has been that many or most of these situations do not involve suspension. The head coach, when asked simply says that the player has a "personal situation" or "some things he needs to take care of" or simply a "I cannot comment on the situation and why he is not playing". The media immediately knows it is a privacy law issue and doesn't pursue it. Or, the player is suspended for a game or some specific # of games or time period. "Suspended indefinitely", is more often the phrase when it is something more serious - not every time, but more often than not.
Also, I think it's strictly a FERPA compliance issue, not an NCAA compliance issue, although the NCAA rule book is so enormous I could very well be incorrect on this point.

Re: Anybody know what the story is with DC?
Played golf with a young lady yesterday who had been at a party near UP this last weekend. She commented that it was a fun party, but kind of sad too because it was also a going away party for some UP students who would be leaving school at the end of the term.
Without my prompting, she mentioned that she thought one of those leaving was a basketball player called Dorian….I did NOT pursue the conversation.
Many of us have been hearing for several weeks now that Dorian will indeed leave school next week, but until we hear it officially, it’s just rumor.
Hmm, come to think of it, we may want to check the Portland State website for possible updates to the Vikings roster.

Assuming he does leave after finals - how does that work in terms of scholarships? Does that open up a 2013 one?

Yes, it does......and maybe now is a good time for everyone on PN to make their Christmas wishes known regarding an addition to the roster.DeanMurdoch wrote:Assuming he does leave after finals - how does that work in terms of scholarships? Does that open up a 2013 one?

Yes, depending on whether you think it has already been spoken for.

Does Ahern inherit that scholarship for the rest of this year?DeanMurdoch wrote:Assuming he does leave after finals - how does that work in terms of scholarships? Does that open up a 2013 one?

Would sure be nice to find a successor to Nicholas...the big man depth two seasons down the road is currently looking a little thin...

If this "rumor" is true, that makes two transfers in two years. I'm not liking the trend here.
My Christmas wish is DC rejoins the team for the 2nd semester.and maybe now is a good time for everyone on PN to make their Christmas wishes known regarding an addition to the roster.

David could get a scholarship at a D-2 or D-3 school, but I believe he'll remain a walk-on while at UP....but you just never know how a player will progress. Sherrod Watson is an excellent example of a recruited walk-on who developed into a starter and scholarship recipient....so it can happen,

not even possible, i think.
you can't split up or share scholarships in Basketball and football. they are allocated to one player for one year.

Re: Anybody know what the story is with DC?
Wonder whether it is splitting a scholarship if a player leaves school altogether? If the player doesn't remain in school there is nothing to split . . . or so the argument goes.
You may now feel free to inundate this thread with NCAA regulations proving your point . . .or so I would hope.
Merry Xmas to all Pilot fans.

You bring up a good point.pilotram wrote:He must be really good to get a D3 athletic scholarship.
As most know, D-3 schools do not have the same access to athletic scholarship money as D-1 schools, but D-3 schools often offer non-athletic financial aid packages rather than athletically based support….even though the aid is for athletics.
As there are fewer guidelines for scholarships in D-3 schools compared to D-1, these institutions have more choice in how they allocate their funds and why. What may be illegal in D-1 regarding non-athletic scholarship money to athletes, it’s perfectly legal to give athletes scholarship money from non-athletic scholarship pots in D-3.
If in doubt, call your D-3 lawyer.

Technically yes. I think the issue in the past has been D3 athletes who barely graduated HS somehow landing thousands in academic scholarships. I've heard there's a school down in Salem where this happens from time to time.pilotram wrote:it’s perfectly legal to give athletes scholarship money from non-athletic scholarship pots in D-3.

Well if Cason is really leaving, which would be a shame for sure, we would really need to find another power forward who can rebound.

Re: Anybody know what the story is with DC?
On campus this morning, and spoke to a professor who spoke with DC yesterday.
P: "How are you doing...are you staying in shape...are you ready to get back with the team?"
DC: "No, not really."
P: "Oh, you're not ready to rejoin the team?"
DC: "Nope, I'm heading to California next Tuesday."
P: "Well, have a good trip and enjoy your Christmas."
DC: "Thanks"
Don't know if "heading to California" is permanent, but I doubt he'll be rejoining the team anytime soon.

It also looks like we are going to need to add another recliner to the PN 2K Club soon...

Nah, just make the new limit 3K when you get there. Saves money for beer instead of a recliner.
