Pilots @ San Diego Thursday @ 8 pm on TV
The Pilots first WCC game of 2013 will be on various CSN networks, including CSNNW, this Thursday at 8 pm against San Diego.
It is no surprise the Pilots are the underdogs in this and all remaining road games this year. Pomeroy has them losing 65-60 (72% probability) and RealTimeRPI favors USD 72-61 (74.3%).
Both have 7-8 records (both are 5-8 against D-1 teams), but the Toreros are a much better shooting team, and Ken Rancifer and Johnny Dee love sinking the 3 point shot. The small but dangerous Dee is averaging over 14 per game, and Rancifer averages over 10.
Sophomore Christopher Anderson is running the point (and averaging 10 points) making it possible for sophomore Dee to get more open looks. I think we can expect KB to be Dee’s defender.
Senior Chris Manresa at 6’9” 245, fills a big space under the hoop, but has been hampered a bit by injury. He averages 10 points and just under 7 rebounds per game.....he will be a handful.
USD’s freshman Dutchman and Canarius alum, 6’9” 225 Jito Kok, must be quite a leaper and swatter as he’s got 19 blocks in 17 minutes per game……here’s hoping UP’s Dutchman and Canarius alum can avoid him….it could be a great trash-talking rivalry.

Re: Pilots @ San Diego Thursday @ 8 pm on TV
From the USD Athletic Department (edited):
The USD Toreros, 7-8, open up the New Year and their West Coast Conference slate with a Thursday evening contest against the Portland Pilots, 7-8. Game time is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
SERIES RECORD: This is the 71st meeting between USD and Portland with the Toreros owning a 43-27 series edge... USD has won the last two, including a 78-75 overtime win in the last meeting on Feb. 16, 2012 at the JCP... Dennis Kramer scored 6 of his career-high 22 points in the extra period - he also pulled down 11 rebounds... USD guard Christopher Anderson also totaled a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 13 assists... Portland closed out the regulation period on a 22-5 run to send the contest to overtime. San Diego earned an 82-63 win in Portland last January 19th... The Toreros tied a USD school record for three-pointers made with 14 (19 attempts) and set a new mark in three-point accuracy (73.7%)... Ken Rancifer led five Toreros in double figure scoring with 15 points... Prior to last season's two Torero wins, the Portland Pilots had won five straight in the series.
TORERO TIDBITS: The Toreros snapped their three-game skid with a 66-63 home win over Morgan State... In scoring a game-high 24 points, sophomore guard Johnny Dee reached 22 or more points for the 12th time in his career (46 games)... He leads this year's team with 11 games in double-digit scoring, including a season-high 27 points (vs. Siena)... Senior forward Chris Manresa posted his second straight double-double with the exact totals of 10 points and career-high 13 rebounds in win over Morgan State... Over his past four games he is averaging 12.2 points and 10.2 rebounds highlighted by his 18 point effort against Oregon State... Senior forward Ken Rancifer saw his string of five straight double-digit outings come to an end with his 4 point effort against Morgan State... Rancifer and Christopher Anderson follow Dee in double-digit scoring outings with 8 each... For the season Dee leads the team in scoring at 15.2 points per game... He is followed by Manresa (9.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg), Rancifer (9.9 ppg) and Anderson (9.3 ppg, 6.2 apg, 2.6 steals)... Anderson ranks 2nd in the WCC in both assists and steals.

Re: Pilots @ San Diego Thursday @ 8 pm on TV
By now, most of you know the Pilots were delayed 6 hours at PDX yesterday on their way to San Diego by a mechanical problem on one of my former employer’s jets. Those are the times we need a rich alum show up with their private jet.
I’m thinking this delay could be a positive sign…..something to shake up the routine a little!
As always though, the coaching staff treated it with outward humor and made good use of the time….from Coach Reveno:

Hmm, and by my calculations you no longer qualify for "Young Alum" status for all those discounts....I think you may just have to get a second job at a sports bar!dholcombe wrote:Internet feed. I don't have those fancy channels.

Nah, much easier to get a stool at your local pub that has a brass plaque with your name on it like I have.
It does take a little commercial 'investment' though...

Win tonight and I forget about Montana State.
Hell, follow that up with a win against Pepperdine and I might just forget about the UTPAtrocity.

Maybe there was a silver lining to that "UTPAtrocity"... maybe the team learned that they have to bring it every night, every game... they have to prepare mentally and physically every time, even against the teams you are favored to beat. Also to not get too high after a win, and always turn to prepare for the next challenge.
Maybe that loss will prevent another down the road....

The Montana State loss was supposed to be the wake-up call. But anyways...any word on Oskars?

Man, between that and expiration of the Social Security tax discount... Maybe if you stop spending so much money I can stop paying social security for you? Are there any make work programs? Perhaps I could convince the government to give me money to open a new sports bar as part of another round of economic stimulus once everyone sees their paychecks shrink to 2010 levels.

We're shooting ourselves in the foot on offense, yet again. A string of wasted possessions in the waning minutes of the second half.

Ugh. 35% shooting. 2-15 from three point range. Nicholas shoots 4-15. It doesn't matter how good our defense is if we only score 50 points.

Our offense is better when Oskars plays in my opinion. He doesn't play much though.

I agree and I would like to see what he can do with more minutes, but right now he can't play. He has his foot in a boot.dholcombe wrote:Our offense is better when Oskars plays in my opinion. He doesn't play much though.

Oskars played 17 minutes tonight vs. USD... and I agree that I like when he is on the floor. Pressley, too.PurplePrideTrumpet wrote:I agree and I would like to see what he can do with more minutes, but right now he can't play. He has his foot in a boot.

Re: Pilots @ San Diego Thursday @ 8 pm on TV
He played almost half the game tonight. His foot condition is really one of those things where it's probably up to him about how it feels any given day. My mom has the same condition if what I heard is correct and it's something that really only goes away with rest. Wearing the boot around all day should help and he can take it off at game time...playing won't help, but it's a choice. Surgery for such a condition is rare.
