Pilots (7-10, 0-2) @ Loyola Marymount (8-8, 1-2) Saturday @ 7

Obviously, LMU is an overwhelming favorite to win this game….they are the better team and the Pilots are on the road, but there’s always that glimmer of hope; UP HAS won at LMU before.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say, “Stop Anthony Ireland, and you stop the Lions,” but it would sure go a long way towards evening the playing floor if Korey can put the clamps on him.

Really a surprising win for LMU last night against Santa Clara, as SCU has had some real success this year with the return of their two stars. It would appear the Lions came through against Santa Clara because the Broncos, who have been living by the three-point shot, died by the three.

LMU held Foster to 11 points on 4-for-18 shooting…and he’s the same guy who scored 29 against Duke and Gonzaga. It always helps LMU when Anthony Ireland is able to do what he can do best….put the ball in the hoop. The junior guard scored 29 points after scoring 27 total points in his first two conference games. So, as Ireland goes so does LMU.

The Pilots have the third best field goal defense stats the league, behind Pepperdine and Gonzaga, and the third best three-point defense. This could be UP’s saving grace and if they can slow down Ireland they COULD pull this out on the road.

• The Lions are 8-8 on the season after their 84-80 come-from-behind win over Santa Clara on Thursday. The Lions improved to 5-2 at home, winning three straight after closing non-conference with wins over CSU Bakersfield and Morgan State.

• Anthony Ireland led the Lions with 29 points and eight assists on Saturday, pushing his average to 20.7 points per game on the season, which is ranked 17th (as of Jan. 6) in D-1 and second in the WCC. In the last three games at home, Ireland has averaged 27.7 points, five assists, five rebounds while shooting 50.9 percent from the field (26-for-51), 52.3 percent from three (9-for-16) and 91.7 percent (22-for-24) from the line.

• Senior Ashley Hamilton is having his best season as a Lion, scoring 17 points with seven rebounds, two blocks, a steal and an assist off the bench in the win over Santa Clara. He is averaging 15.0 ppg and 7.1 rpg. He is ninth in the WCC in scoring and sixth in rebounds. He is also fifth in the WCC in offensive rebounds and 12th in defensive rebounds. He has 524 rebounds in his career, the 25th Lion to crack 500 rebounds for a career. He is ranked 21st all-time at LMU.

• Redshirt junior Alex Osborne has started the last seven games at center in the place of Godwin Okonji, who had emergency Laparoscopic Appendectomy on the evening Dec. 12. Osborne has responded in a big way. He had nine points and a career-best 10 rebounds against Ole Miss in his first start and then followed that with 11 points and five rebounds at Saint Louis. Against Saint Mary's he led the Lions with eight rebounds while scoring 10 points with two blocks and two steals. He added eight points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists against Santa Clara. He is 20th in the league in rebounding at 4.8 rpg, 12th in offensive rebounds with 30, and 13th with 1.31 steals per contest.

• Junior Ayodeji Egbeyemi is also having his best season, sitting third on the team with 10.9 points per game and 6.3 rebounds per game, ranking 20th and ninth in the WCC, respectively. He had his second career double-double on Nov. 29 with 16 points and 11 rebounds against LBSU.

• The Lions closed non-conference with their fourth game hitting 50 percent or better from the three-point line, hitting an efficient 6-for-12 from long range in the win over CSUB. And in their return home to open WCC play against Santa Clara, they did it for the fifth time. LMU finished the game hitting 9-for-16 (56.3 percent) from long range in the win over the Broncos, hitting 6-for-8 in the second half. Ireland went 3-for-6 while freshman Nick Stover came off the bench to hit both of his attempts to finish with six points in 13 minutes..

Another good opening to the game followed by a run by LMU. Hopefully we can answer this one unlike our other away games lately.

Ahern got a solid 6 minutes and provided 1 assist... So, that answers that dilemma.

Rebounding and defense. One bad stretch for us, which included TOs and missed bunnies. Defense and rebounding got us back in and won us the game. A good game.

I took the DoubleDipper approach. I am currently watching the 2nd half on Campus Insiders. Much less stressful this way.

Great to hang around and get the come-from-behind road win!

Pilots Pull Out Thrilling Win at LMU, 68-64

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots erupted for 47 second half points to pull out a 68-64 come-from-behind victory over the Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday night in West Coast Conference men’s basketball action at Gersten Pavilion. Junior forward Ryan Nicholas finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds, including the clinching layup with nine seconds left in regulation.

Senior point guard Derrick Rodgers finished with 10 points, nine assists and three rebounds in 34 minutes, continually making clutch plays at both ends of the court. Sophomore guard Kevin Bailey returned to the lineup after missing the previous two games with a broken nose and scored all 14 of his points in the decisive second half. Sophomore center Thomas van der Mars also just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Pilots (8-10, 1-2 WCC) dominated the rebounding margin by a 43-19 count and had a 36-16 edge in points in the paint.

Junior guard Anthony Ireland paced the Lions (8-9, 1-3) with 22 points and senior forward Ashley Hamilton finished with 17 points.

Portland jumped to an early 21-12 lead on a pair of Rodgers’ jumpers, but the Pilots went scoreless over the final 6:07 of the half as LMU raced to a 31-21 halftime lead.

The momentum changed in Portland’s favor with a 12-5 run to open the second period as Bailey scored his first five points of the game during the spurt. The Pilots were able to continually get transition baskets and second chance opportunities to re-take the lead. Freshman guard Oskars Reinfelds made a fast break layup with 12:56 to give Portland its first second half lead at 41-40.

Hamilton’s free throw gave LMU a 49-48 lead with 9:09 remaining, but Bailey answered with a three-point play on the following possession and a Rodgers fast break lay-in made it 55-50 Pilots. LMU pulled within one on an Ireland three-pointer with 5:53 left, but Nicholas beat the shot clock buzzer with a three of his own one play later. Bailey also drilled a three to give UP a 63-58 lead following a media timeout.

The Lions made two free throws to get within 66-64 and 39 seconds remaining, but chose not to foul Portland on the ensuing possession. Rodgers broke down the defense and threw a bullet pass to Nicholas unguarded at the rim for the decisive layup and the Pilots celebrated after Ireland missed an off-balance jumper at the buzzer.

Portland will now return to the Chiles Center for four straight WCC home games beginning with No. 8 Gonzaga on Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on ROOT Sports. The Pilots will return two days later to host defending WCC Champion Saint Mary’s at 7 p.m. on Saturday, also televised on ROOT Sports.

Our starting backcourt of Rodgers and Thieleke was pretty serviceable too.

Rodgers had 9 assists and 2 turnovers and was 5-8
Korey had 5 and 2 and went 4-6 from the field.

The first 6 guys shot .500 or better. When was the last time we did that?

Ha ha, tonight I watched the entire game after I knew the score….not because I feared for the Pilots, but because the 49ers game was on the TV.

Yawn, a WCC road win…no big deal, we won one last year too; at SCU.

The game plan was to “push it,” and push it they did….very impressed by Derrick’s play tonight. Without looking at the stats, he was the catalyst, and we saw he CAN race it down the court.

One of the key plays of the game came at the 8 minute mark when Derrick took it to the hoop with his left hand to make it a 4 point game….and another key play at the 2:30 mark when Derrick found VDM under the hoop as the shot clock wound down. And the final play, that allowed us all to relax a bit, came when Derrick found Ryan under the hoop for a layup inside the 1 minute mark.

It was good to see Kevin shake off the rust from his time away and have a big second half. Korey had the unenviable task of guarding Anthony Ireland, but he couldn’t guard him the entire game, as Ireland played all 40 minutes and scored 22 points, but was only 6-18 overall.

David Ahern, “NCAA D-1 point guard,” sounds pretty good….

Ha ha, I just saw the stats and the official attendance: 1,612. Do you suppose everyone had two tickets? In addition to the "dancing" Catholic girls the camera kept showing, there might have been 1,000 more fans....

A +24 rebounding edge for the Pilots is sick! And Derrick with 9 assists (the entire LMU team had only 11) and 10 points on 5-8 shooting...he's my player of the game; sorry Ryan. Shocked

Anyone else not mind Rodgers taking that WIDE OPEN three late in the game, too? Yeah I know he missed it, but damn it was good to see him have the gumption to take it (only his 5th three attempt of the season).

A great win tonight as the Pilots head into the homestand.

There is enough love to go around after tonight. Everyone contributed and low and behold look what happens when you have four players in double digits, you win! Great team effort.
Derrick certainly had a terrific game, setting his mates up for good looks with his 9 assists. Kevin coming back and shaking off the rust was good to see and the team shooting 54 percent for the game is huge on the road.
Warrior award can go to Nicholas who played a great second half even after spraining his ankle early on after the break.
I would have liked to see a bit more Tanner tonight. He only logged four minutes and Rev was talking him up on the pre game show. The team is going to need some outside help the next two weeks and it would be nice to see him get some looks. With that said, Oskars is playing nicely so the minutes are being battled for.

When Ryan went down then threw the ball away for an LMU bucket, Reveno (or as the game announcer called him, "Revenoo") really went after the refs.....repeatedly yelling, "You had 3 chances to blow your whistles."

I just don't know what to think about Tanner. He started out very hot his freshman year by winning the MVP award in the 4 team tourney at UP, and we thought he was the next coming of Nik Raivio. He started out well last year too, and had an excellent five games in Europe this past summer. I was thinking that he was having to work so hard in the classroom it was affecting his game, but he's not improved at all during his month off from classes.

Luke Sikma once told me Tanner just had a confidence problem, but he'd soon get over once he started making his shots....unfortunately he still hasn't made his shots. Evil or Very Mad
