Question:DoubleDipper wrote:The last Terry Porter show of the season is tonight (Monday), maybe this would be a good time to ask him if he saw any players during the tournament who might be potential UP recruits. He can’t give you names, but he can infer….
A. Would you like to listen to Terry Porter on the radio tonight,
or
B. Would you like to know he's on road looking for recruits to make the team better in the future?
Yeah, I also answered B!
There will be no more Terry Porter Shows this season, but we can expect a recap of the season and a look to the future on video next week.
I've already asked a number of general/non-specific questions about recruiting that we might see answered on the video; take the time to write Coach Porter if there is something about the MBB program you too would like to know more about.

Re: 2017 Recruiting
Coming from "the conference of champions" Bill Walton is less than generous in his characterization of the WCC:
nick daschel @nickdaschel Mar 11
Bill Walton says the WCC is a "truck stop conference." I was at UPortland today, and didn't see a truck stop for miles.

Daschel dispelled Walton's characterization with a personal inspection of the campus.
Unclear whether recruiting has been affected. Please, we are river boat Pilots.
And Daschel had this tweet partly concerning Geno West:
nick daschel @nickdaschel Mar 11
#opreps Have a feeling not only is 6A title decided in final 236, but also player of the year between [Portland State bound 5’9” Elijah] Gonzales and [Geno] West.

Re: 2017 Recruiting
This article in Tuesday's Tribune about Jefferson's run to the 6A Championship would seem to indicate that statement is true (Idaho is apparently looking at him).DoubleDipper wrote:(Geno) West has no known D1 offers, and it would appear UP is not recruiting him.
http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/349742-228724-preps-clutch-plays-clinch-title-
UP obviously has a number of recruits they are looking at, and based upon his recent performance, I believe West is now one of them. But I also believe other recruits will have to come off UP's recruiting board before West is invited to matriculate at UP using one of the presumed 3 scholarships that are available.

One more open scholarship for next year. Yikes, Pilots fans.

Wow, that's one I didn't expect. Though I have to admit, his body language was not good at the end of the season. I just assumed he was worn down.

Re: 2017 Recruiting
Jazz could potentially be the first UP player in my memory to transfer "up" to a higher-tier program. It will be interesting to see where he goes. Of course he'll have to sit out a year.
So as of now, we have five returning players:
Taylor
Tyson
Hartwich
Jackson
Smoyer

Plus redshirts Malcolm and Franklin Porter.
Better give X a scholarship.
National Letter of Intent Signing Date is April 12th. More surprises to come?

As many of you may know, Jazz' dad has a pretty controlling interest in Jazz' basketball life...and Jazz leaving UP would seem to be a product of his dad's influence.NoPoNeighbor wrote:@malika_andrews wrote:I'm told Jazz Johnson will not be returning to the University of Portland to play for Terry Porter and the Pilots next year.
Jazz just informed Coach Porter this morning....

I guess that could still happen, but Xavier has a couple of D2 offers in Southern California that he's pretty excited about.up7587 wrote:Better give X a scholarship.

Good for him. I was only semi-serious, but having every ball handling guard leaving the program is a little scary.

You are too young to remember Tim Frost?
Or going back a little further to your favorite former Pilot, Greg Anthony.

Mmmmm. Oh, he set foot here...
Jan. 6, 1957, at the University of Portland: In the second of back-to-back games against the Pilots, Baylor had 41 points and 23 rebounds. In the first, had 33 points and 21 rebounds for a two-day total of 74 points and 44 rebounds.
Jan. 12, 1958, at Portland: Baylor had 28 points (of his 48 total, plus 17 rebounds) by halftime, prompting Portland coach Al Negratti to state, “It’s the best I’ve ever seen Baylor play. He’ll be a great pro player. He’s strong as an ox, too.”
Al was wrong, three weeks later Elgin dropped 51 against the Pilots with 19 rebounds in Seattle.

Since my dad has been a Pilots fan for 70 some years, I had always heard about Baylor leaving the College of Idaho, and supposedly coming to Portland until Seattle swooped in and stole him. No idea about the real truth.

Here's Elgin on his way to 51.

The real truth as heard it 'from those who should know' is the Bishop wouldn't let him come here because of grades.
Seattle had him sit a year to get eligible, while finding him AAU teams to play for. And he was enticed to Seattle by Seattle car dealer Ralph Malone.
Not sure that's kosher now....not sure it was kosher then.
( I understand Jesuits don't keep kosher)
I also didn't know his father named him after his favorite watch.
Another income bracket and he could have been Rolex Baylor,
Or Patek Philippe Baylor.
At least he wasn't named after a steak.

While this is disappointing, I feel that this was somewhat predictable given his high school journey.

That's not an unfair statement. As mentioned, his dad has a lot to do with Jazz' basketball decisions.SouthCarolinaPilot wrote:While this is disappointing, I feel that this was somewhat predictable given his high school journey.
Much earlier in this thread it was stated that Jazz thought he should be the starting point guard next year....Coach Porter (once an all-star pg) simply didn't share that opinion.

Re: 2017 Recruiting
Well, I've been mulling a post about our returning players, and what areas of improvement they each need. For Jazz, I was thinking calm ball handing in pressure situations (e.g. first LMU game ending) was an area of improvement.
He's terrific creating his shot, but he was better when Alec was setting him up.
Good luck to him in his next opportunity.
