Re: Illinois Friday Nov 22nd
I guess I'll take hope from my memories of a game that looked like that in Redmond a few years ago. Only 8 players on my daughter's team made it across the pass, and, playing against 11 plus subs, they eked out a 1-0 W. Hardships seemed to bring out the heroics.

Re: Illinois Friday Nov 22nd
It reminds me of a game I played at MIT many years ago, except that the picture looks like a dry snow and at MIT it was a wet snow. We had those old, heavy balls. Great fun!

Was switching radio channels at work and Garrett Smith was on The Lars Larson Show today.
Here is the link, just let it play from the start.

According to Lars all we have to do is beat Illinois, then the winner of the Nebraska/Boston College match, and we will win our 3rd national championship...

I hope Lars is right. It would certainly save lots of needless time and effort.

Looks like I'll get to attend the UCLA vs. Stanford/South Carolina game on Sunday.
Gosh, I hope it's South Carolina... I'm so sick of Stanford.

True. I'll give you that one!
But for variety's sake, I'd choose South Carolina just because I haven't seen them before. Stanford will need to upset them, though.

As you probably know, Merlo Field puts UCLA's track stadium/practice field to shame. I probably won't enjoy being there. It's pretty much impossible to see anything without binoculars, even on the near side.

As one of the 12 people in Portland who actually get the Pac-12 Network, I'm surprised at some of the fields in one of the top conferences in the country.uclabobby wrote:As you probably know, Merlo Field puts UCLA's track stadium/practice field to shame. Yeah. I get the Pac-12 channel too (online, through my parents' Time Warner feed), but I certainly agree with you. USC's is worse than UCLA's. It looks like it's in a city park.

Re: Illinois Friday Nov 22nd
I'm not sure South Carolina should be favored against Stanford. South Carolina has a higher ARPI, It 5 URPI, and Massey rating, although not by a lot in any case and without taking game location into consideration. Stanford has a higher Bennett rating, and Bennett's prediction calls the game a toss up. Adding to that is the question of home field advantage. I know the game is at UCLA, but I think field familiarity helps, so I think Stanford has some home field edge although not as much as if the game were in Palo Alto. If I adjusted the It 5 URPI as though Stanford has half the usual home field advantage, the game is very close to a toss up.uclabobby wrote:True. I'll give you that one!

Re: Illinois Friday Nov 22nd
Hello all,
I cover the Illini for WDWS-AM in Champaign, IL. Thought I'd stop by and introduce myself. If any of you hang out in the forums at Big Soccer, you've probably seen my posts in the women's college section over there. Thought I'd share a few interviews I did this week with head coach Janet Rayfield, midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo, and goalkeeper Claire Wheatley. Hope you enjoy them, and let me know if you have any questions about the Illini.
EDIT: Well, I was going to link them, but can't do so for seven days. You can find them at IlliniHQ.com under podcasts.
Cheers!

It's cold (26-28 degrees), very windy, and overcast in Lincoln this afternoon. Snow flurries predicted overnight, ending around 2:00 am. Hopefully, no accumulation.

In most things Portland does women's soccer better than most places. But local media covering UP is not one of them.
