Re: 11/18: Pilots @ Michigan St
So the Michigan St student section (AKA the Izzone) got Columbia with this twice late in the game. In the first half of the game they start counting down from 6 when the shot clock says 10. In the second half they start counting down from 10 when the shot clock says 6. The result -
Here's hoping the Pilots are ready for these shenanigans. Or maybe they should just concentrate on trying to shut down Payne and Appling!

It's going to be another difficult babtism under fire for Alec Wintering as David Carr is still not cleared to play......
David's absence may not make a difference in the final outcome at MSU, but moving forward David will be counted on to steady the team, add a little scoring punch, and push Alec for starting PG position.

Just figured out yesterday that I get the Big 10 Network on my cable package (not the premium one - I don't get ESPNU). Glad to be able to watch the game. I think.

The SB*Nation WCC power ranking are out for this week…..and UP is ranked 9th out of 10.
http://www.midmajormadness.com/2013/11/18/5116796/weekly-wrap-wcc
You can read the entire article here:9. Portland Pilots (1-1)
Senior Ryan Nicholas and junior Kevin Bailey have been the focal point of this Pilots team. Unlike other teams that rely on two guys, there isn't much around them. When Nicholas went 5-15 from two and posted an offensive rating of just 78 against Oregon State, the Pilots were unable to find production to make up for his off-night. And, obviously, they lost. That was the WCC's first loss of the season. Maybe I'm just bitter about that, but I really don't see the Pilots making any strides this season. Nicholas and Bailey won't have bad games very often, but there is nothing spectacular about this team. In a league full of high octane offenses and stout defenses, unspectacular won't cut it.
Eric Reveno has built some absolutely brutal schedules over the past few years. This year's is far more manageable, save for the assured blow out defeat at the hands of Michigan State tonight.
Last Week: W 100-83 vs. UC Davis, L 73-79 at Oregon State.
This Week: 11/18 at Michigan State (3-0), 11/21 vs. Idaho (2-1), 11/22 vs. Columbia (1-2), 11/23 vs. North Texas (2-1).

Ha-ha....face it, while “Jack” the Bulldog may be the present mascot at the other GU, “Stubby” the Terrier, “Hoya” the Terrier, and “Butch” the Great Dane all take precedence in my estimation. It's just a matter of time before Georgetown changes mascots once again.
But really, what is a Hoya, anyway? And don't tell me it's a stone wall...that makes no sense!!

As a Great Dane owner myself, I now have a new respect for Georgetown. (this is also why the University at Albany is my second favorite D1 school - go Danes)DoubleDipper wrote:Ha-ha....face it, while “Jack” the Bulldog may be the present mascot at the other GU, “Stubby” the Terrier, “Hoya” the Terrier, and “Butch” the Great Dane all take precedence in my estimation.
Back to tonight's game....this is the second game in a row for the Pilots against an irritated team from a major conference (OSU after the Coppin State debacle, Mich St after the near disaster against Columbia). Would sure be nice to put up a Columbia-like scrap tonight on national TV.

Re: 11/18: Pilots @ Michigan St
Wrong phrasing. You answer the question with reverse word order. As I learned in Classics ( do people still study Greek and Latin?) ποιο ( poio, hoya , hoia in Greek transliteration to The Latin alphabet) means what.DoubleDipper wrote:

Hoya Saxa means what rocks which was a reference to the line on their football team back when they had football, in a Greek-Latin pidgin. Apparently the Georgetown students weren't very good classics scholars.(rocks in Greek is βράχια -vrahos or vrachia, from which we get breccia)
Sort of like Fordam's seven blocks of granite.
And neither pup is a terrier. Spike and Jack ( not Hoya) are virtual twins of each other- to the G on the cap.
Your turn...what's a Zag?

You would think announcers for a team with State in its name would be sensitive to the difference for a team with and without the word...

Re: 11/18: Pilots @ Michigan St
3/9 on 3's....could get better there in the 2nd half...but shooting 13/32 (41%) overall.
3 steals...1 block (Barker)....only 5 fouls....7 turnovers, but MSU has 6.
Biggest difference IMO, MSU has 11 offensive boards....the Pilots 6. Oh, and Voldy has 7 boards. (Remembers he's the only one on the team with previous experience against the Big-10)
All right, let's do this!!

82 - 67 MSU at the final. After being tied with 12 minutes to go, MSU pulled away with great long range shooting and strong rebounds. Congrats to the Pilots on a strong effort; I felt they looked a lot better than they did in Corvallis.

Also, it was nice to see Korey get back into the rotation. Great hustle as always, if not always in the right place. I chuckled when he popped one that bounced in, and the commentator said "shooter's touch".

Re: 11/18: Pilots @ Michigan St
They played well.....the stats between the team are almost even across the board. As up7587 mentioned, it was the long range shooting that made the difference.....can't do much about a team shooting 13/30 from behind the arc (the Pilots were 5/15).
Love the number of assists on the part of MSU....21 (the Pilots had 13).
To only be out rebounded by 38 to 34 means the guys were really banging and blocking out.
Now, guard against a letdown for Thursday's game against Idaho; I don't think there'll be a chance of letdown against a very talented Columbia team on Friday.
