Re: New Coach search?
Meet new assistant coach Steve Lowe:
http://www.portlandpilots.com/news/2014/6/4/WBB_0604145908.aspx
It is my understanding that Coach Sorenson will hire two more assistants and that current assistant Jazmine Foreman will take up new duties as Director of Basketball Operations while she pursues a graduate degree.

Re: New Coach search?
So DDip, are the Pilots likely to sign another player for next year’s team? Is coach Sorenson worried that offering too many scholarships at this point might fill out the roster for next year but may not potentially help the team in the long run?
Your comments would be appreciated.

Sorry, I have NO information whatsoever about Coach Sorenson's recruiting strategy or next season's roster beyond what has already been announced.wrv wrote:So DDip, are the Pilots likely to sign another player for next year’s team? We've talked, but none of our conversations have been about the team or potential recruits.
I know the Pilots signed 6-1 170 C Ashley Gray from Yakima back in November to partially fill the shoes of graduate Amy Pupa.

If I hear of any other news on the recruiting front I'll post it on PN.

Thanks. I will be watching for future posts. I imagine there remain needs the staff perceives as needing to be addressed through an addition or two.

Re: New Coach search?
Like me, you might have been wondering where Coach Kelly might fit in Coach Sorenson's plans. Turns out he just landed a gig of his own down the street at Concordia. I'm glad he finally gets to lead a program of his own.

Great to see Sean land on his feet. It'll be a good chance for him to make his own mark. Good success to him.

Anyone who has attended UP games, and especially practices, will know that Coach Kelly was the staff member who did the majority of teaching and coaching during the final few years of the Coach Sollars' era.

Answering the challenge from her peers across the country, Head Coach Cheryl Sorenson took an ice bath in balmy 50.2 degree water to raise money for the Kay Yow Foundation as part of the #Chillin4Charity trend that has spread across the nation.

Coach Sorenson adds two more assistants:
Brianna Chambers
Megan Osmer
Chambers and Osmer join fellow first-year assistant coach Steve Lowe and Jazmine Foreman to complete the UP staff. Foreman will take on the role of Director of Women's Basketball Operations after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach with the Pilots.

Meet Sara Zaragoza #14 from Madrid, Spain. At 6-4 or 6-5 (I've seen her listed at various heights), she should be formidable in the post at some point depending upon her development and her stamina and agility.wrv wrote:So DDip, are the Pilots likely to sign another player for next year’s team? Congratulations to the coaching staff on the commitment of their first recruit.
Highlight tapes can often mean very little, but you've gotta like her sound fundamentals and the upbeat music.

Do like that music. Highlights might not mean much, but I liked what I saw. Let’s hope she can be a presence inside. A rare site in Espana, 6’4” and blonde?

Not really. Northern Spain has people of Celtic and Nordic heritage. The Visigoths, who ruled Spain for 500 years were, after all, goths (Swedes)
Even El CID signed his name Reccared instead of Rodrigo sometimes.
( and the real Brunhilde was a Visigoth Queen from Toledo. She married a guy named Siegebert and became Queen of Burgundy and Austrasia)
And with better nutrition, the last 30 years has seen the average height of Northern Spaniards grow taller than the average American. The rest of Spain isn't far behind.
They have Universal Health care.

So 6'4" blonds are more rare on the UP campus than in Northern Spain?

For the last 10 years that would appear to be the case.

Wow, 6-5 Carly, what a wonderful young lady she was at UP…..and guess what, she does have a Spanish connection.Geezaldinho wrote:Carley Koebel is the only one I can think of.
Carly was a double major in global business and Spanish at UP, was a member of the Spanish National Honor Society, and was for a while an English language assistant at the Collegi Sant Pere in Spain.
Carly was well-liked by everyone UP and she won UP Women’s Basketball Most Inspirational award in her sophomore and senior years at UP.

Re: New Coach search?
Most of us were aware of Thomas van der Mars getting his MBA last Saturday, but there was another MBA recipient that should be recognized....Women's Director of Basketball Operations, Jazmine Foreman!
Originally from Hudson's Bay High School in Vancouver and a graduate of BYU, Jazmine was an assistant coach at UP until taking over the DBO position this year so as to have more time to get her graduate degree.
It's not easy working and going to school too.....Congratulations to Jazmine!
Oh, and what was Jazmine doing just a week before graduation? She was on the road recruiting. Yes, DBOs are not normally allowed to recruit, but the NCAA does allow them to fill-in when one of the coaches is "incapacitated." I wouldn't ever call Coach Cheryl incapacitated, but as she is due to deliver her first child TODAY, she thought it best not to be flying/traveling on recruiting trips.

Coach Cheryl did give birth to her son yesterday, Soren James Lee (recruiting Class of 2033).DoubleDipper wrote:I wouldn't ever call Coach Cheryl incapacitated, but as she is due to deliver her first child TODAY, she thought it best not to be flying/traveling on recruiting trips.
So when Coach Sorenson finally gets around to matching her public surname to that on her wedding certificate, Lee, she'll still have young Soren to carry on the original and old family name; before the son of Soren may have arrived in the US.

Re: New Coach search?
Sharon Rissmiller, one of the all time favorites of UP Women's Basketball fans, is leaving Pacific University after 8 years as the head coach there and has taken the Director of Basketball Operations position at Oregon State.
Ris, as she was known by most everyone, played four years at UP before graduating in 2001. At the conclusion of her senior year Ris was named to the All-WCC First Team and was voted the Pilots' Most Valuable Player.
I would imagine the draw of big time Pac-12 basketball, the extra money, and the chance to join a Top-25 team was too much to resist even though she won't be able to actually coach, for now.

Pacific just named Jennifer Mountain, assistant at PSU last year, as the new Basketball coach

Good to see Jennifer will have another chance as a head coach after being sacked by SCU a season ago. Her record at SCU was poor, but she is a very good coach.Geezaldinho wrote:Pacific just named Jennifer Mountain, assistant at PSU last year, as the new Basketball coach

I honestly thought she might end up on Kelly Grave's staff at UO, but Ris got that job and Jennifer got the Pacific job....its a pretty tight fraternity (sorority?).

Rissmiller is at OSU, not UO. She works for Scott Rueck.
(at least that's what google tells me)

Oops, I guess I should have read my earlier post saying Ris was going to OSU.up7587 wrote:Rissmiller is at OSU, not UO. She works for Scott Rueck.
Well, two things in my defense:
1. It's often difficult to tell one state school from another.
2. And what are doing reading about women's basketball? I thought this was where Geez and I, and occasionally PPT and Nut, just posted in anonymity.
