Figure we need an offseason thread to encompass random happenings around Pilot hoops.

Check this out - Article - some love for Rev and the Pilots in an early WCC projection.

Gonzaga will be the team to beat for the foreseeable future, but other schools in the WCC are making strides, according ESPN:

Yeah, I'm not thinking Rex has a stable model for long-term success. We'll see. Unless someone makes him a better offer, of course.

One man's opinion from CBSSports:
It can't all be on Gonzaga. The Bulldogs will almost definitely lord over the league again, but the time must be now for the middle of the league to upgrade. BYU helps a little, sure, but the rest of the conference -- tough as it might be -- is going to need to land, and win, some quality out-of-league games. The WCC is wobbling on the fence of being included with the A-10, Mountain West, Big East and AAC. It seems a notch below those four leagues, which are a notch below the big five, but we think the West Coast can be a perennial multi-bid league.

2013-14 conference RPI - WCC .5330 (9th), MWC .5266 (10th)
2013-14 conference kenpom - WCC .6234 (9th), MWC .6006 (10th)
2013-14 NCAA bids - WCC 2, MWC 2

Not sure if the WCC should be considered "a notch below" the MWC. The two seem pretty equal to me, even considering Air Force and SJSU bringing down the MWC's ratings. I think both conferences are perennial contenders to be a three-bid league.[/quote]

Indeed.  News flash: the WCC has been a multi-bid league for close to a decade now.

These guys have UP ranked at #89 in their countdown that, for whatever reason, started at #144. Ranked #4 in the WCC too.

I have no issues with the write-up, actually pretty solid for a writer that's based in the East. Grain of salt time, these guys had SMC ranked at #130 and #6 in the WCC...I think the Gaels will be much better than that with Bright, Simmons, and Coleman coming in. But who cares, it's August.

Thanks for posting the link, Deaner.  I think the piece was a very good assessment of this year's Pilots.....and written by someone from the East Coast...wow. Shocked

The North Pole Hoops guys do a pretty solid job of following the Canadian basketball players that are around, especially when they do something like this....blew up my Twitter feed last night.

Something tells me that our Jasonn Hannibal won't be invited back to McMaster University any time soon...

Some may recall that two years ago Rhino and Tanner headed to Belgium and Germany for a five game tour against international competition.....this year Bryce is part of the 12 man squad on the tour....and I heard that Alec might also be on the tour.

Nice, last summer in Spain, this year just a little farther north.   Cool

Speaking of Rhino....he's now with his professional team in Germany.

From a Q&A with the guru Ken Pomeroy -

Sportando: Have you already identified some big sleepers for next season?

Ken: I'm just now gathering the data necessary to run the preseason rankings, but the formula for finding sleepers is pretty simple: find a team that lost a lot of close games, didn't perform well in the postseason, and returns most of its roster. The problem is that even people not into analytics have cracked that code in recent seasons. So I'd say Utah and Arkansas are good candidates this season, but I'm not the first person to suggest those teams. Among more obscure teams, Georgia State is worth watching with Ryan Harrow and R.J. Hunter back from a team that went 25-9 but lost in its conference tournament.

So Pomeroy's formula for finding sleepers -

• teams that lost a lot of close games
• teams that performed poorly in the postseason
• teams that return most of their roster

I can think of a team that fits into all three.
