In addition to his dad being UP's coach, Franklin is having to fight for playing time on the deep roster at SMC....making a transfer even more likely, IMO.

As mentioned before, having two Porter's redshirting this coming season would seem an ideal situation as it allows them to mature under their dad's tutelage, and it gives TP's team a young nucleus around which he can recruit and build.

Yes, under WCC rules, Franklin would lose a year of eligibility in addition to sitting a year, but one would think the WCC would look with favor on a waiver request based upon Franklin playing for his dad.  (No waiver=no transfer, IMO).

Yeah, again it's just a highlight reel, but it would appear he has excellent ball handling/dribbling skills, and I like his almost two handed jumper, but it would appear he needs to work on his left hand shooting ability/confidence when driving to the hoop.....just as Alec has done.  pirat

His dad was slow to develop and mature as a player, and apparently had no D1 offers out of high school....Malcolm is reportedly better than his dad coming out of high school.....so a redshirt year with his brother is looking better and better.

I found this especially interesting:
UP powers-that-be were initially concerned about Porter’s lack of experience coaching at the college level — the administrative part, recruiting, etc. Poppycock. He’ll have aides to help with administrative duties. Recruiting?

“You’re telling me Terry Porter visiting with a kid and his parents in their living room wouldn’t be effective?” asked Erik Spoelstra, the UP grad who serves as head coach of the Miami Heat.
With all due respect Spoelstra has also never recruited a high school athlete. And as far as NBA cred and landing recruits, we need only look at Holdon to see this alone isn't a magic bullet. Porter's assistants should also have a big hand in recruiting, as I'm assuming they will come from the college ranks where they have been part of recruiting processes.

Porter is actively involved in the Boys and Girls club. He should know something about talking to kids. Having high school/college aged boys right now probably helps him too.

Susie Porter would love to "have all three of my boys at UP at the same time."

TP expressed his concerns about scholarship availability, but said it was totally up to Franklin to decide if he wants to transfer.

Two things coach: 1. Apply for a waiver to the lost year of eligibility in the off chance he does want to transfer and 2. Pay for your son's first two years at UP....the university will pay for the last two years through the employee reimbursement program. Cool

40k+ per year is a decent chunk of change even for a multimillionaire.

The tuition remission "waiting period" policy can - and has been in the past - shortened or even removed all-together, typically for key employees with a lot of leverage.

Here are links to some of today's media coverage (about 100x more coverage than the Pilots have ever received for any actual basketball game):

KGW (includes comments from Wintering and Todd)

KATU

KPTV (comments from Porter about his sons make it sound like Franklin is staying at Saint Mary's)

Nick Daschel for the Oregonian

John Canzano for the Oregonian

Portland Tribune

Portland Tribune, too (more quotes from Wintering, plus some fans and Malika Andrews from the Beacon)

Thanks. It looked like most of the players were there, but I didn't see Philipp.

Regarding comments about his older son, I wonder if tampering is an issue even for a father who's also a coach.

I have to think that he cannot openly recruit his older son, as he is under a LOI/scholarship at SMC. It will be interesting to see how this topic plays out...

Really? you think there's an NCAA rule that says a father can't talk to his kid?

There would be an awfull lot of violations that would have to be reported.

I was thinking more that he can't make public comments about his kid, while the kid/player is committed to another institution.

More to the point, I suspect Stoney is aware of the benefits available from the other angle.

From the similar situation SMC was involved in just a couple years ago - http://www.abqjournal.com/239378/sports/college/report-cullen-neal-will-be-released-from-st-marys-commitment-play-for-unm.html

At his introductory news conference, Craig Neal was asked about the prospects of his 6-foot-4 son playing for him in a Lobos uniform.

“If his mom’s good at recruiting, we’ll have a shot,” Craig Neal said.

But from the same article -

Craig Neal told the Journal on Saturday that he didn’t feel comfortable commenting on the matter because neither the Neal family nor anyone at UNM had officially received the release paperwork from Saint Mary’s. The official paperwork will likely be received by UNM on Monday.

Guessing compliance got a hold of him between the first quote and the second!

This captures what I was trying to say more clearly... when I said openly recruit, I was referring to publicly doing it.

Probably true, but if the university were to amend/bend the rules for the basketball head coach to bring in his sons, the NCAA would love to point out how special consideration is being given to a student-athlete that might not be given to another student at the university.

TP and Susie can afford to pay for their kid's education.....if TP were to sell his Porsche it would cover the first year for both of them... Razz

In this interview a week ago the interviewer starts out with a question about TP's oldest son, Franklin, and another asks about younger son Malcolm.

Interesting that TP had already met with the players collectively and singularly by the time he was introduced as UP's head coach.
