Ken Goe follows up his video interview with RC with this good natured look at Reid Buchanan who will run in the 10,000-meter final tomorrow at the NCAA Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field.

10K was televised on ESPN2....UP's Reid Buchanan finished in the excellent time of 29:13.40
First place went to the prohibitive favorite, Edward Cheserek, with a time of 29:09.57

Looks like that was a personal best for Reid, according to the preview data.

Re: NCAA Nationals - Rob Conner Interview
Twenty-four runners started the race, but by the time the final two laps had begun, a pack of six runners had pulled away from the rest.
It was close to a forgone conclusion that the defending champion in the 10K, Cheserek, would win, but it was quite a sprint from the final turn to the finish line as the top six spread out a bit. During that final sprint, Buchanan caught and passed the Kentucky runner to grab fifth as they closed in on the finish line.
My complaint with the telecast was the announcers who described individually five of the final six runners, including the Kentucky runner who was described as an "excellent sprinter and finisher," but Buchanan's name was never mentioned, even as he passed the "sprinter" to take 5th.

Re: NCAA Nationals - Rob Conner Interview
For sure, and it was only the third 10K he's ever run....so it will be exciting to see just how much better he'll get as he continues to race. Too bad his college eligibility is used up, and he won't be running for UP.pilotram wrote:Nice work Reid! Looks like he ran smart.

Re: NCAA Nationals - Rob Conner Interview
TV coverage of track leaves much to be desired, sadly not surprising. I watched the Pre Classic a few weeks back, hoping to see both mile races. During the first one, they were doing a live interview with some meet official instead of showing the race. Occasionally in the background, I could see a runner go by the camera. Ugh.

UP Athletics wrote: Buchanan held strong through the race remaining with the lead pack from start to finish. Working the outside lanes for a majority of the race, the Manhattan, Kans. native maintained pace and completed the final mile of the race in 4:17.
That final mile time included an incredible kick on the home stretch. With a half lap to go Buchanan was 20m behind Kentucky's Jacob Thomson, but Buchanan sprinted past Thomson to take 5th place by a 0.33 margin

Re: NCAA Nationals - Rob Conner Interview
More T&F tonight when Lauren LaRocco goes in the 10K at 7:08 and Kaylie Van Loo starts throwing the javelin at 5:45.
Looking at my Comcast guide it would appear both will get some coverage on ESPN from 5-8, with a repeat later on ESPNU.

Re: NCAA Nationals - Rob Conner Interview
She made a nice move just now to get up with the lead group as separation was starting to develop.
Edit: Wow ESPN showing the majority of a 10k, and a women's even too! Amazing.

LaRocco 4th overall! Nice work! Ran a very smart race, hanging back in the pack until she needed to move up. Was in a group of about 8 going into the last few laps and clearly moved up a few spots to finish.

Re: NCAA Nationals - Rob Conner Interview
That was fun.
The winner, Dominique Scott from South Africa and U of Arkansas won in 32:35.69, but Lauren really closed the gap within the pack to pass three runners down the stretch to finish in 32:47.30.
Pretty sure her 4th place finish is the best ever in the NCAA Finals by a Pilot....beating out last year's 5th place finish by Woody Kincaid in the 5K.
She races again on Saturday in the 5K...and she's got two more years of eligibility!

Re: NCAA Nationals - Rob Conner Interview
Kaylie Van Loo threw 157-11 to finish in 18th place in the javelin, and does not qualify for the finals.....
Van Loo was the first thrower in program history to compete at Nationals for Portland and the first field event competitor from UP in ten years. She set a personal best at the regionals to qualify with a throw of 167-8.
Remember, as good as she is, Kaylie, a junior, is on a basketball scholarship at UP!!

Re: NCAA Nationals - Rob Conner Interview
Thought she might have been the top returner for next year, but it turns out the UNM girl is only a junior. She did the majority of the work leading the pack early on.

Top 2 finishers (and #7) are from overseas, they took are jerbs! Kidding, but that makes LaRocco the #2 All American.

Woody finished 9th in the 5000 tonight. The race went at a really quick pace... he ended up breaking the UP record by 8 seconds and set a PR by 16. Not too shabby!

Re: NCAA Nationals - Rob Conner Interview
It was quick, and it probably could have been even quicker considering some of he personal best times of a number of runners coming into the meet.
Edward Cheserek once again had the sprinter's finish to take first place....but Woody and all his fans have to celebrate his personnel best and school record of 13:32.49....sixteen seconds better than he previous best time!!!

I saw somewhere (Twitter I think?) that Woody actually had the fastest last 400 in the race. If true, pretty dang impressive given the competition.

Wow! Lauren LaRocco just took 6th in the 5000. She went into the race with just the 21st-best qualifying time.
