Baseball 2017
No one has started talking about this yet, but I am really excited for baseball season this year. Seeing as UP was at the bottom of the WCC standings last season, there is no where to go but up! Personally, I would be satisfied if they even just made the WCC's four team tournament at the end of the season.
In other WCC news, San Francisco AD Scott Sidwell has been named the chair of he NCAA Tournament Selection Committee. Hopefully, that will help some WCC programs in the future.
On a personal note, some of you know that I am at the University of South Carolina now, and my goodness their baseball stadium! I am definitely excited to catch a few games there this season.
Also, does anyone have any idea what has happened to Chris Sperry since he was let go?

Re: Baseball 2017
Last I heard, Coach Sperry was a private/semi-private baseball and life coach.SouthCarolinaPilot wrote:Also, does anyone have any idea what has happened to Chris Sperry since he was let go?
I haven't seen him since last summer, but I think he's still teaching the physical skills and the mental approach to baseball and preparing student-athletes and their parents for the grind of college recruitment/life and school selection.
EDIT: Found Sperry's website by doing a simple search....something most students probably do a dozen times per day.

Re: Baseball 2017
Attracted by the sound of the plinking of baseballs off of aluminum yesterday, I dropped by the Pilots first 2017 practice and hardly recognized anyone from last year's squad.
It turns out this year's team begins the season with only 14 returning letter winners joined by 20 new players. Twelve true freshmen, two redshirt-freshmen and six JC transfers.
The team travels to CSUN to begin the season in three weeks, and will play its first home game at 6pm on March 9th against Northwestern....a school that's really not in the Northwest at all....

Re: Baseball 2017
WCC Preseason Poll suggests that we will come in last during the conference season. There is nothing else to read from that article as we did not land any preseason all conference picks.
That being said preseason polls are not a good predictor of team finish. In fact, it has been suggested that last season finish is a better predictor of where a team will finish in the upcoming season. We did finish last in the WCC last year, so there is that too.
Guess we just have to wait and see how the season plays out.

With 20 new guys on the team, I expect things will be improved, but just like with so many other WCC sports, the rest of the schools will also have improved.SouthCarolinaPilot wrote:WCC Preseason Poll suggests that we will come in last during the conference season. It will depend upon who's got the pitching....

WAKE UP IT'S BASEBALL SEASON!
Actually, baseball season started yesterday since Vanderbilt at San Diego (San Diego beat #6/#7 Vanderbilt!), UCSB at LMU (LMU lost), and Stanford at Fullerton were rescheduled. So...
WAKE UP IT'S PILOT BASEBALL SEASON! Hopefully this will take our minds off of the basketball performance for a bit this year. Good luck today in Northridge! I hope the bats are hot and the pitching is perfect.
Edit: Love the confidence in this video!

Re: Baseball 2017
Sunny and mild here in Portland this weekend, a perfect way to start the season!
Oh, wait, the Pilots are playing in Southern California where there is a "winter storm warning" in effect:
Heavy rain with potential flash flooding across much of southwest California today through Saturday morning...
A strong storm system tapping into deep subtropical moisture will generate heavy rain across Southwest California today, with numerous showers continuing tonight into Saturday. There is a slight chance of thunderstorms through Saturday as well.
Strong southerly winds combined with ample moisture will lead to periods of heavy rain with rain rates around 1 inch per hour at times.
UP does not play in Portland until March 9th....

Re: Baseball 2017
Temper your excitement, SouthCarolina. It's amazing that the game could have been played in Portland in February but not California.
It's 72 and sunny here. At least I got my baseball fix.

Having been in Los Angeles today, it was a soggy windy mess, and I was lucky to get out of LAX. Who knew Portland's weather would be preferable in mid February?!

Re: Baseball 2017
1-2 to start out the season isn't terrible. We only won the one game because of a comeback in the 9th followed by a homerun in the 10th. Offense just wasn't enough this weekend. Since many of the guys are new this year, I imagine that it will take some time for them all to figure out each other's styles.

Re: Baseball 2017
I know Coach Loomis feels very confident about this year's middle of the lineup offensive additions to the roster, but after being shutout twice this weekend....I too believe it's really all about pitching in the final analysis.DoubleDipper wrote:It will depend upon who's got the pitching....

Re: Baseball 2017
The Pilots finished with an overall record of 17-37 last season, and in last place in the WCC with a 3-24 record....from what Coach Loomis is saying, it might be a little better this year....

Let's see if my magical predictive powers hold up for the second half of this prophecy. It's unfortunate. I have seen a lot of UP athletics (alrhough not as much as prettt much every other poster on here).
What I can gather from Twitter is that the boys at least gave 'em a run for it today.

Well, sort of....the Pilots didn't lose. Today's game in Bellevue was postponed due to "unplayable field conditions." No makeup date announced, but the Pilots now head to UC Irvine for games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.SouthCarolinaPilot wrote:Let's see if my magical predictive powers hold up for the second half of this prophecy.

Another bad weekend for the Pilots. But, they have put runs on the board in every game. I'm still hopeful!

Re: Baseball 2017
Baseball's first home series is this weekend versus an equally battered and beaten Northwestern Wildcats squad. Coming in at 2-9, their only wins have come against Santa Clara, which should be a good barometer for the Pilots. Both teams appear to suffer from a lack of good pitching, so I would expect a high scoring series. But, I am just guessing based off of box scores from the other coast. Series starts tonight at 6pm under the lights, followed by a double header Friday, and a morning start on Saturday.
One of the other PhD students in my program is a Northwestern graduate and she and I have a small bet riding on this series. Our purple is better.

Re: Baseball 2017
Pilots win game 1 of the double header 5-2. On to Game 2.
UP alumnus, Oregon State head coach, and two time national champion Pat Casey got his 800th win as a coach the other day. I believe that if the game versus UP were played Tuesday then he might have picked up that milestone win against his own alma mater.

Okay. Lost the other two, but we showed some promise and DOUBLED our win total for the season. This is still a young, inexperienced team overall.

Re: Baseball 2017
The Pilots are now 4-16 on the season after taking two from Seattle U. over the last two days.
Still looking for their first conference win when they head to St. Mary's on Friday.
