Re: Baseball 2017
Watched the Pilots beat Santa Clara on Friday night and Sunday morning, but I understand they lost to SCU while the rest of us were watching the Final Four games on Saturday.StudentPilot wrote:Pilots still winless in WCC play after losing three at St. Mary's....but the forecast is sunny for their game against Oregon on Tuesday at Etzel Field....
Now 2-7 (last place) in WCC play, the Pilots take on #1 ranked Oregon State on Tuesday at 6pm on the UP campus before hosting Pepperdine for three games beginning Friday.
Do you suppose Ty Cockfield likes watching baseball?

Re: Baseball 2017
I don't know, I really think of baseball as an individual sport of hitting, fielding, and pitching, and then it's up to the manager/coach to strategically position and move the players like chess pieces on the board/diamond.SouthCarolinaPilot wrote:Maybe this team just needs time to jell? Tomorrow evening's game against #1 OSU is "officially sold out."

Re: Baseball 2017
Within a week's time UP lost to UO 1-0, and tonight they bowed to the #1 Beavers 4-3.
Unlike the announced crowd at a basketball game, tonight it seemed every seat was full....something like 1,200 to 1,300 fans. Whatever the attendance, it was HUGE!

That's so agonizingly close. Can I interpret that as a sign that we are willing to "get up and play?"

Re: Baseball 2017
I only saw parts of last night's game against OSU, but 18 Pilots struck out, and OSU played nearly everyone on their roster, so it was pretty tough to judge if UP is becoming competitive, but yeah, I'd say they definitely willing to "get up and play"......whatever that means.SouthCarolinaPilot wrote:That's so agonizingly close. Watched sophomore nursing student Kevin Baker pitch 10 scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts and 0 walks today before he left the game for the dugout, and I left for home to watch it on the TV....it was cold and windy.
Pepperdine scored the first run of the game in the top of the 16th, but UP came back in the bottom of the 16th with 2 runs (both on bases loaded walks) to win the game 2-1.
Pilots head to Eugene for a 6pm first pitch on Tuesday....it's on the Pac-12 network.

Re: Baseball 2017
I did catch the ending of this game. Have to love the response from the Pilots after giving up the 1st run in the 16th inning! There were many composed at bats at the end. I doubt that was the intent when that rundown happened between 3rd base and home plate, but that gave our other two runners time to get to 2nd and 3rd for the the run to tie and the winning run to get into scoring position. Then, an intentional walk loaded the bases for UP. Have to feel for that Pepperdine pitcher, two walked batters at the end to lose to game.

Re: Baseball 2017
The victory over Oregon is a small bright spot on an otherwise forgettable season. Also, I noticed the Oregonian didn't even repost a press release about it. Weird. I wanted to see the carnage that can be the OregonLive comments section.
Side note: we are lucky to have Oregon and Oregon State play us at Joe Etzel Field. It probably has to do with the fact that it is attractive to them to play games in Portland. These SEC schools rarely travel for their midweek games.

Re: Baseball 2017
It was a beautiful night for a game. There were plenty of angry Duck fans there, if it makes you feel better.
FYI, they serve beer at every home game on the first baseline berm...

Re: Baseball 2017
Holy smokes! We just lost a game to BYU and this was the final score line (link):
..................R....H....E
Portland......19...21...2
BYU............23...22...4
Every Pilot managed to get at least one hit. BYU pitched with a DH at one point (who struck out some batters he faced). Ryan Hoogerwerf got 2 home runs in his first two at bats for the Pilots. 42 combined runs is believed to be a school record.
