Homebrew Event
A pretty cool event coming up for all you beer lovers. July 29th from 2:00 - 5:00. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/up-brewers-fest-2017-tickets-32628965113 I'm not sure on the exact location, but will find out. It's put on my the Alumni office.
I've got a Double IPA fermenting away and plan to make some sort of a summer ale this weekend. Come and drink some of my beer!

Can I bring a Coors Light to wash it down?

Someday I will try to brew a lager, but I doubt there will be any at this event.

Re: Homebrew Event
I was talking to one of the UP Alums who will be sharing his beer at this year's event that's called "UP Brewers Fest 2017"....and he told me there will be 14 beers and brewers competing for best beer.
According to the UP Alumni office, "you can celebrate Portland’s vibrant homebrewing community by tasting these unique small batch beers brewed by UP alumni and friends at the Pilot House on Saturday July 29, 2-5 PDT."
All community members and families are welcome to attend.
A $12 ticket includes entry to the fest plus a tasting glass, 8 tasting tokens, and snacks. Additional tokens are $1 each.
$6 ticket includes entry to the fest and snacks.
blacksheep gave the link to buy tickets in advance (above), but you can also just pay at the door.

Re: Homebrew Event
I just tasted my beer and I have to say it's fantastic! The summer ale is a little over carbonated, but I have a week to try to fix it. I hope a few of you will come out and let me know what you think. My beer is under the name Uncle Dave's Brewery.

Nope, I went with Sun's out, Gun's out Summer Ale
My other beer is Bad Influence DIPA (continuing on the Uncle Dave's theme).

I stand corrected, looks like someone brewed a light lager.

Re: Homebrew Event
What a great event. There was a really good turnout and lots of good beers to try. I will definitely be doing this again next year. I need to step my game up though.

I'm sorry I missed it... will you be supplying the halftime refreshments on 8/10?

I have some beer left, and would totally do that. Not sure what the OLCC Implications are. You might want to check with some of the people who were at the event to see if they would even want my beer.

Re: Homebrew Event
Still almost a year away from wearing a white wrist band, I was unable to try the 15 brews (was Bear Pit Breakfast Stout poured over vanilla ice cream a beer or a desert?), but I was "told" by one PN contributor that your "Bad Influence Double IPA" was "excellent and definitely the "hoppiest" of all the beers....and at 7.2% ABV, a good beginning to a fun afternoon."blacksheep wrote:I have some beer left, and would totally do that. That same reviewer also rated "UP Yours," "Pilot Light," Bye Howard" and your "Suns Out, Guns Out Summer Ale" in his top five, but he may have just been going by the fun names of the beer....
Turns out that to be a good home brewer you need to grow a bit of a beard....guess I'll never be a good home brewer.

Not true. One of the winners also couldn't grow a beard. Her Pale Ale brewed over coffee was actually quite good.

Re: Homebrew Event
I just got an email that this year's Brewers Fest will be July 28. Time to start bribing all my friends and family to come and vote for my beer!
I need to put some thought into what I should brew. I just brewed my first pilsner last weekend, but I won't know if it's any good in time to do a second batch for this event. I've upgrade my equipment since last year (mostly temperature controlled conical fermenters), so I'm thinking I may do the Double IPA again and see if it's reviewed better.

Re: Homebrew Event
Based upon what I've heard from last year's event, that might be what it takes to win!blacksheep wrote:I just got an email that this year's Brewers Fest will be July 28. Time to start bribing all my friends and family to come and vote for my beer!
No disrespect for the winner, or the winner's beer, but I was told there were better beers...just a matter of taste, I guess.
Last year there were 15 beers to choose from (although I'm still not convinced the Bear Pit Breakfast Stout over ice cream should count as a true beer)....that's a lot of competition.

Re: Homebrew Event
I certainly didn't deserve to win last year. There were a lot of good beers, but the fan favorite was not even close to my favorite beer.
As for the ice cream in the Stout, while it was quite gimmicky, it was still very good.

Re: Homebrew Event
My two entries for the Brewers Fest are currently fermenting away. Thought I'd bump this to the top. It's a great event and a great value at only $15, which includes food.

Re: Homebrew Event
Another bump as this event is this Saturday. If you don't want to deal with the crowds and the heat at the Brewers Fest downtown, come to the air conditioned Pilot House and enjoy some homebrew. I'm entering a double IPA and an oak aged stout. Looks like there are 8 homebrewers this year. Most people enter two beers, so I'd guess there will be somewhere around 14-16 beers to try out.

Re: Homebrew Event
I agree, the UP Brewers Fest has proven to be is one of the most fun events at UP, and it's for everyone!
Savor a refreshing drink and escape the heat in the air-conditioned Pilot House starting at 2 o'clock this coming Saturday afternoon, July 28th.
A $15 ticket includes entry to the fest plus a tasting glass, tasting tokens, and snacks.
Additional tokens are $1 each
....I'll be pretty disappointed if PilotNut doesn't take advantage this great event!
