Re: 2017-2018 Schedule
Well, that was disappointing....
I bring five PSU friends to the game, the Pilots end up losing, and I end up having to buy everyone pizza after the game.
Both the men's and women's basketball teams lose to PSU this season....does that usually happen?

Re: 2017-2018 Schedule
The St. Francis (PA) Red Flash are in town for a 1 o'clock game today.....and it's FREE ADMISSION for ALL!!!
It would be great to see a nice crowd on hand to help the Pilots this afternoon.
St. Francis is playing a pretty ambitious 4 days of basketball. At GU on Monday, at UP today, and at BSU tomorrow.
I don't think the rest of us are required to participate, but I understand there will be an ugly Christmas sweater contest between the staffs of both teams.

We were up by 29 (!) at one point in the 3rd, but Saint Francis has fought back and forced overtime.

Double overtime... I didn't understand the referee's call at the end of the 1st overtime: was it a double flagrant or a double technical?

Final score: Pilots drop the game 106-101. That is disappointing.

Re: 2017-2018 Schedule
That was ROUGH. We couldn't quite understand the double flagrant/technical call (would've helped if the booth turned down the jukebox when Buzz announced it) over in the band, either. Thought the officiating was so-so--why did they have so many reviews?--but, at the end of the day, officiating didn't lose that game. Bad play in the 2nd half did. That was a 29-point lead. Re: 2017-2018 Schedule
Starting with the 2014-15 season through now (pre-USD game tonight), Coach Sorenson's program is a combined 7-53 (0.1167) in WCC play, not counting 3 consecutive first round losses in the WCC Tournament (the Pilots were the #10 seed all 3 years).
Are there any compelling arguments that the program is getting better? The current state of this once-proud program is very disappointing...

Re: 2017-2018 Schedule
I have to agree. Absolutely no disrespect to the girls on the team giving it their all right now, but I think it might be time to consider Mrs./Mr. outside hire. But, I think we are going to have an extremely difficult time luring anyone decent to coach our program. But, then again, the volleyball team was in the doldrums and they managed to turn that around.

As you suggest, the ladies are playing their hearts out and are actually improving each game, but their development is just not keeping up with the rest of the WCC. If, as expected, a couple of recruits from "Down Under" arrive this summer, it should help next year's squad, but that does little to help the leadership get better.
Coach Sorenson is in her 4th year of a 5 year contract, and I do not see Scott making a change until her contract is done, but when he does make the (inevitable?) change, I don't think there will be any trouble attracting some very good candidates to interview for the head coaching position.
There are so many excellent assistants, and even former head coaches, out there who would be attracted to the UP culture, the PNW, the facilities, and the opportunity to completely turn the program around without the pressure of winning immediately or following in the foot steps of a legend.
Recruiting has definitely gotten better over the last couple of years.....in-game coaching has not!

I’m very happy for them today! Those women have had several close heartbreakers this season. One thing is for certain: they never stop fighting!

Re: 2017-2018 Schedule
Another W! This time over Pacific: 89-67.
The 6 total wins thus far ties Sorenson's record for wins thus far. So, she and the team have a chance to beat that this year. I know I have heard that this team is young, but the majority of the minutes played thus far have come from juniors and seniors.

Re: 2017-2018 Schedule
Stopped by the Chiles Center at halftime today for some popcorn and hot dog, and a very average Pilots team was suddenly transformed....
The Pilots led at the half, 38-37, but it didn't stay that close for long as the Pilots outscored the Tigers 51- 30 in the second half by shooting 53% (18/34) to UOP's 28% (10/36).
UP's ball hawking defense had the Tigers in disarray and UP seemingly couldn't miss after the break, including from the foul line where they hit 13 of 16 in the second half.
UOP trounced the Pilots in Stockton, 91-55, less than a month ago, and there's a good chance the two teams will meet in Las Vegas on March 1 to determine who will move on to play on March 2nd against the likely regular season champs, Gonzaga. The Tigers are currently in 6th place at 6-8, and the Pilots are in 10th at 2-12.

Re: 2017-2018 Schedule
UP women stepped up on Senior Day, and trounced PU 82-58. Dominated entire game.
