Yes, UP is a winner!

the Pilots could be flirting with a finish in the top half of the WCC
Well, that would be up one spot from 2021-22. Who are candidates for being passed by the Pilots? Not GU, obviously. Even if they lose all 5 starters, they have picked up some major talent and have others waiting to get their chance to play. SMC? doubtful. SCU? They lose a lot of talent. Maybe. USF? They also lose some key players, and have a new coach. Maybe. BYU? That would complete DD's bucket list.
Behind the Pilots, USD has a new coach, and LMU and PU seem to be messes. Pilots should be able to able to stay in front of them. UOP and USD will be looking to move up, like the Pilots. So beating them will be critical.
Just a little over six months before 2022-23 season gets going.

So far none of the Pilots from last year who entered the transfer portal have signed with a D1 school, based on a search of Verbal Commits.

The only committal I have heard of (unconfirmed) is Yaru going to D2 Regis, a Jesuit school in Denver, I believe.up7587 wrote:So far none of the Pilots from last year who entered the transfer portal have signed with a D1 school, based on a search of Verbal Commits.
I have not seen that posted anywhere...

Re: 2022 Offseason
Both Nik Milosevic and Matija Svetozarevic are leaning toward playing for money in their respective countries, Montenegro and Serbia, but apparently both are also considering some college ball opportunities in the US.
The only school I have heard Matija's name mentioned with is St. Francis (aren't there two in D1?), and apparently Nik was in some talks with Florida (unconfirmed).
After some early interest from a couple of Big West teams in Matheus Silviera, I have heard rumors his interest in continuing playing college basketball has waned, and he may decide to simply be a college student.

Interesting.Fox Mulder wrote:After looking at Yaru Harvey's twitter page it looks like he is headed to Northwest Nazarene University to continue his basketball career. Best of luck to him in Nampa, ID at his next stop.
As late as last Friday Yaru and D2 Regis U. were talking...I guess he found Nazarene a better fit.
I'm pretty sure the Nighthawks are also a D2 school.

Re: 2022 Offseason
Here is the link to a podcast about WCC Men's Basketball by Sam Blohn...
https://anchor.fm/sam-blohn/episodes/West-Coast-Roundup-S3-E1-e1j9g7v
He predicts the order in which each team will finish WCC play and then breaks down the strength and weaknesses of each.
Full disclosure, I have not listened to it, nor do I know anything about Sam Blohn or his credentials to talk about the WCC...so it would seem he fits right in.
The podcast indicates he does not get to Portland until the 28-minute mark.

Re: 2022 Offseason
His power ranking has UP #6. He says we could be higher, but there are no gimmes in the league among the lower level teams.
His #1 & 2 are obvious. He has USD #3, then BYU and USF. #7-10 are SCU, PU, UOP and LMU.

Re: 2022 Offseason
Mr. Blohn has detailed knowledge of all the teams, and at least with UP he got his facts correct including the latest addition in Applewhite. Unlike a couple other teams (e.g. USD), he isn't blown away by UP's recruiting, but he likes the new adds and says it provides the Pilots quality bench depth. Says St. Pierre will be a big improvement at center whether he starts or comes off the bench. Thinks 5th place is the ceiling and 6th is the floor, and projects as a CBI team. Likes the freshmen but doesn't think they'll play much this year. Says don't underestimate Legans developing players to get what he needs.

Players coming back
I know it's early but how many of last year's players are coming back? Specifically the bench players from last year. I see Yaru is not coming back.
Thanks

Re: 2022 Offseason
I am told Matheus Silveira (Big Zo) turned down a couple of D1 offers in the west to head back to the Sunshine State and the good life at D2 Rollins College in Winter Park. (Zo had been at Pensacola St. prior to UP).
I am not sure if it's true that all the players get a boat as part of a sweet NIL deal, but it's a small school (2,000+ undergrads) with a good reputation for academics.

That is the #6 ranking in the WCC. GU #1 of course. SMC/BYU/USF in the #60-85 range; SCU & UP #108 & 112. USD/LMU/PU in the #141-171 range. And UOP #232.
Of course we all remember how the rankings changed for several teams over the season last year.

Re: 2022 Offseason
The Aussies are here/back!
Jack and Tyler are eager to get back to work after being back in Melbourne for the first time since 2019, and for at least 6-11 Bol, it was a matter of checking to make sure all the door jams in Lund Family Hall were tall enough to accommodate him.
Jack Perry says he is finally at a point he can start putting some pressure on his knee, and so far, it is feeling good.
Tyler Robertson is eager/excited to get this year's deeper team together.
And the quiet freshman, Bol Dengdit, still jet-lagged a day after arriving from Australia, is getting the campus tour and says he is not a post-up 5, but prefers the 3/4, which should give him quite a size advantage.

It is not like there is a big rush by people to grab the old seats for their homes like there has been from some of the old iconic ballparks and stadiums.up7587 wrote:Good info for those who's seats are worn out.Scott Leykam @sleykam wrote:Seating project at the Chiles Center is underway. Mid-Major Madness is taking questions on twitter. In response to "Top WCC non-Gonzaga teams this coming season?"
@mid_madness wrote:BYU, Saint Mary’s, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco (no exact order).
I could see all six seriously competing for an at-large bid at some time during the regular season. Need to do well in non-conference.
