Nice win tonight, 3-0 over the Sun Devils.
It was especially fun to see her teammates mob her on the pitch when Selma Licina scored her first goal as a Pilot after 4 years on The Bluff.
Next up: #1 Alabama nextThursday Friday in Tuscaloosa at 5pm Pacific.

Well deserved. I thought she was the best player out there by a lot. Worked very hard in the midfield trenches and looked threatening every time she went forward. An assist and a goal to put the match away. She had been pretty anonymous much of the season until tonight. I admit I even had to reach for my (non-existent!) program to verify who #7 was. But she caught my eye early and continued to play a big part at both ends.

Re: Ranked
I have been watching Selma for all four years she has been on the Bluff and enjoyed seeing her play, as she always has seemed to have very good field vision and ability to send the ball to the right spot. This year, even more so, but last night it seemed like someone turned a switch and she played uninhibited, unselfconscious, all out soccer, all of her work over the years coming together. It is great she got rewarded with a brilliant pass from Nedya to get her in on goal and was able to put it in.
Fact tidbit: In 2017, the year before Michelle French and crew arrived, the Pilots were ranked #215 by the RPI.

Couldn't agree with you more about Selma, it was great to see her really cut loose.
Another player who I thought had a break out game was Keeley Dockter. She's shown flashes of her talent all season, but she really put it together in this game.

Right before I closed the stream after the final whistle, they had a shot of Dockter crying in someone's arms. What a tough way to end the season.
Nothing to be ashamed about though, it was a very well fought match given the odds.

Agreed. Congratulations to them.
And this is a very young team. This experience will have done them a world of good and if they can add a couple of really talented recruits they could take it a step farther next year.

That was Shea Adams, still on crutches. I went to practice Monday and She told me she was going for an MRI Monday afternoon for a suspected ACL. I haven’t heard about results of the scan, but she has hopes of returning next year.
Tough end to her season, too.

Shea, set to graduate in May and seek a professional career, recently decided to take a smaller class load and "not abandon" her teammates but instead return for another year before injuring her knee during the ASU game.Geezaldinho wrote:That was Shea Adams, still on crutches. Now, with little chance at being a professional in the near term due to her injury, all she and we can hope for is her return to practice in nine months and one more season anchoring the backline for the Pilots.

Re: Ranked
While disappointed, the players should be proud of how they did this year and hold their heads high. They have brought an attractive brand of soccer back to the Bluff and the future looks brighter than it has in a very long time. Congratulations to them all for putting the Portland Pilots back into the NCAA D1 women’s conversation. We already are looking forward to Spring soccer and regular season start-up in August.

Agree with all the sentiments about the fine, competitive season. The staff did an excellent job of coaching and managing the team this year. Looking forward to the future.

RPI obviously works better on the women's side than on the men's. Any suggestions why that might be? Perhaps just more schools having women's programs? Or the prevalence of domestic players vs. imports?

Re: Ranked
UNC's Avery Patterson scores off two very well-placed headers in the second half and then UCLA countered with a rebound goal with 10 minutes remaining and then the equalizer with a header off a corner kick with just 16 seconds on the clock to send the game to OT and then a second OT.
Finally, with just 3:20 to go in the second OT, UCLA scores the winner from a very difficult angle from onrushing Maricarmen Reyes off another rebound in her last game as a Bruin.
A fun second half that was befitting of a national championship...UCLA's second, the first coming in 2013, and this time under a first-year coach Margureitte Aosaza, becoming the first NCAA women's soccer rookie coach to win it all.
If there is a next time for UNC, this is the 3rd year they've lost a College Cup final after winning 11-year ago, they'll probably wait until the final whistle before unwrapping and rolling out the National Championship t-shirts.
For UCLA, it will be interesting to see how they fare playing and traveling in the Big-10 next season.

Re: Ranked
I do not think the number of schools with men's soccer should make a difference, in fact if anything it should make a rating system work better as it should produce better linkage among conferences and regions with fewer teams to link together via non-conference games.SoreKnees wrote:DoubleDipper wrote:On Friday:

Perhaps the better likelihood is that on the women's side, there may be a greater concentration of top talent among a limited number of conferences and schools at the top of the rankings. At the top of the rankings, for the women, results are pretty consistent with rankings; and they are less consistent farther own in the rankings (though once again consistent near the bottom of the rankings). For the men, if the talent is more dispersed, one would expect less consistency of results and rankings.

If UCLA actually moves to the Big 10, it won't be until the fall of 2024. This whole move is not popular among the non-football sports at UCLA or USC. Feel sorry for the student/athletes who will be saddled with all that travel.

Re: Ranked
For those interested, here are the RPI, Massey, and my Balanced RPI ranks of WCC teams as of the end of the season. They are not quite apples to apples since the Massey ranks include the NCAA Tournament games and the RPI and Balanced RPI do not. The Balanced RPI is an RPI variation I designed to correct some RPI problems and improves on the RPI for all rating system evaluation metrics I can think of.
BYU: RPI 20, Massey 17, Balanced RPI 16
Santa Clara: RPI 29, Massey 19, Balanced RPI 20
Portland: RPI 41, Massey 28, Balanced RPI 27
Pepperdine: RPI 54, Massey 31, Balanced RPI 26
Gonzaga: RPI 59, Massey 27, Balanced RPI 32
San Francisco: RPI 74, Massey 56, Balanced RPI 44
Pacific: RPI 117, Massey 66, Balanced RPI 60
St Marys: RPI 127, Massey 74, Balanced RPI 70
San Diego: RPI 200, Massey 170, Balanced RPI 149
Loyola Marymount: RPI 212, Massey 99, Balanced RPI 131
From an NCAA Tournament at large selection perspective, no team ranked #58 or poorer has gotten an at large position from 2007 to the present, so for practical purposes the candidate pool is #57 or better. Thus the RPI defects kept Gonzaga and San Francisco from getting the at large consideration the other rankings say they deserved.
