Andy Poling transfering from GU, considering UP???
No shocker that Poling is transfering from Gonzaga (no playing time and while he was a top-rated player as a sophomore he really slipped his junior and senior years of HS), but I was very surprised to see him mention UP has a possible landing spot in a recent Oregonian article:
http://www.oregonlive.com/vikings/index.ssf/2010/01/andy_poling_ready_to_transfer.html
Given the WCC's two-year transfer rule, I can't imagine that this would happen. Yes, I realize what went down with Rob Jones and SMC, but even that has caused a ton of bad blood between USD and SMC.
My gut tells me that UP and Nevada aren't interested and that it's PSU all the way. He just can't really say that until they actually do offer him a spot.
Redshirt freshman forward Andy Poling, the former standout from Westview High School who was granted his release from Gonzaga on Tuesday, is considering transferring to Portland State, Portland or Nevada, and said Wednesday afternoon that he hopes to make a decision by the end of this weekend.
“I’m still in the process of taking everything in,” Poling said after watching the first half of Portland State’s practice Wednesday afternoon at the Stott Center. “I'm getting calls from other places, but Portland State, Nevada and the University of Portland are the three main places I'm looking at.”

If he were not a fellow WCC transfer I would think Rev would take a long hard look at him. But, like you guys are all saying with our excellent group of freshman big's coming in, our current red-shirt frosh, and 3 senior big's returning.......I believe Rev is scouring the country for the next TJ Campbell, yyes, yes , if anybody can have him on campus by summer it will be REVENO.
TJ Campbell...program changer
Who will be UP's next "surprise' JUCO-MAN!!!

Here is a graph from the end of Kerry Eggers' column in the Trib about the Pilots:
Sounds the same as we are all saying.
Trib Link
Reveno will have seven scholarship players coming to The Bluff next season. He needs a point guard, size and athleticism. He already has four signed to letters of intent and is intent on landing at least one or two additional recruits from the JC ranks. There also players at Division I schools who are considering a transfer to the Pilots.
Sounds the same as we are all saying.

Re: Andy Poling transfering from GU, considering UP???
THANKS UP7587, My only hope is a pt guard, finally Eric got some minutes last night. But, it's almost a lost year for him with Ito not being the giant risk he was on the court last year so it looks like a very good JUCO POINT GUARD IS NEEDED. At least it won't be the tough sell Rev had to make to TJ "would you like to join a 9 win team?". Plus the national exposure at the Anaheim classic, and hopefully a better postseason tourney will help open some JUCO STUD'S eyes to the UP program.
It would be nice to bring a PHYSICALLY GIANT player, all the recruits in frontcourt have better skill level this year though. But , would you not like to see what Rev could do with some Lumberjack (huge) kid hidden somewhere west of the Mississippi who could come to UP with weight in proportion to height.
I think with Luke,Kramer,Jarred,Jasonn(Senior's) and the rest of the guys a super-talented JUCO would blend fairly well. If not I could see Rev benching any Prima Donna. He's never been slow on the hook with Nik our star player, and Nik is no prima donna just so, so, competetive that he sometimes throws up an "early" or ill advised shot. Which I like personally, it's great to see your creator not afraid to shoot, within reason.
I'll sure miss the chemistry of this team

Mesa, you made an astute observation of the situation. Remember though, you have to feed us info on the new Mesa recruit.

Re: Andy Poling transfering from GU, considering UP???
Bailey played on the game of the week show broadcast pretty much Valley wide but I missed it,oops.... I'm trying for one game this month at least. I know you guys imagine Mesa being this little town with me being able to ride my horse from one end to the other(avoiding tumbleweeds and dustdevils) but it actually is the 2nd largest city in the Valley here with 500,000+
I expect reports on our Gonz Prep recruit(Ryan Nikolas) from PilotNut I do believe that is Pilotnut's HS alma mater??? I may be wrong though?
I'm interested in learning and following our two other recruits too. These guys are all pretty skilled and I like hearing how their senior years are coming along.

Our signed recruits, and possible JUCO RECRUITS this spring?
Thanks up7587 imagine me in my Big Game Dave mask and 10 gallon hat. My goal this HS season is to borrow a video camera or kid's I-phone and get a short clip for you guys of John Bailey in action. Just keep thinking Kramer with a 15 foot shoot, not quite as good defensively, nor quite the moxy to muscle in the lane. Maybe someday soon Mesa will actually have a visual for you!!! (But it sounds like Ryan Nikolas is ready right now to step in the middle with his 240 lbs and start right alongside Kramer and Luke next year). Hmm... too bad it's past break I could have gotten you know who or little miss San Diego to do it. Plus they could help with my tech. difficulties in uploading it. Watch out Mesa's has a idea.
My 76yr old Dad is pretty puter and uploading savy,I may ask him for help for the 9 millionth time in my life, lol. Someday you younger guys will understand that, but I know us middle ager's appreciate all they've done and the old turkeys like to know they've done something that is acknowledged.
The problem is the alternating boys and womens schedule at Dobson with one playing at home and the other on the road the same night.I try to get some Phoenix or Mesa sports article scanned in for you guys to see how Bailey is doing. If I did'nt have a messed up Vista Laptop or XP PC I could probably do it the easy way and just link it. Just tell Pilotnut,Sci-Fi, and Rob's Jacket to turn down the force field settings against Mesa and I may be able to link something, lol.

Last week Poling said he would have his choice made up. He seems to be very quiet since then. Perhaps not the hot commidity he once was

recruits
After a bit of research I found some current stats for the three recruits, Tanner Riley, Ryan Nicholas and John Bailey. The internet is a wonderful tool and a couple sites found are MaxPreps.com, and Spokesman.com
Tanner Riley- 17.2 ppg shooting 51% from the field
Ryan Nicholas- 22.3 ppg 12 rbs According to the AP poll released Gonzaga Prep is ranked third in the state of Washington in 4A.
John Bailey- 15.9 ppg 8.1 rbs
Sounds like all three are having great seasons and they should be able to compliment the existing players that UP has.

Re: Andy Poling transfering from GU, considering UP???
One more thing here are the team records for each team.
Riley @ Mt Si- 8-4
Bailey@ Dobson- 12-5
Nicholas @ Gonzaga Prep- 11-1
I am guessing that they are all leaders on their teams and those great records show me that they know how to win which will serve them well in college. Great job guys.

I just read that Andy Poling has committed to Seattle Pacific University. Division II so he will be able to play immediately, hope it is a good fit for him.

Re Andy Poling transferring to SPU. I can't believe that Portland State let a transfer get away. And he had narrowed his choices to PSU, Nevada and UP.

Re: Andy Poling transfering from GU, considering UP???
Well, I think going to UP was never a realistic possibility because of the in conference factory. And perhaps PSU's scholarship issues due to probation had something to do with that situation... But that is pure speculation...

Update, from an article in the Oregonian:
Poling figured to end up at another Division I school. He checked out Portland State, Fresno State, Idaho, and Nevada. He liked the University of Portland, but Gonzaga wouldn’t release him to play for another West Coast Conference school.

Re: Andy Poling transfering from GU, considering UP???
I'm sure it will expire soon, but what I liked better than the Poling story was the drop down ad and the picture of Derrick advertising the UP vs. SCU game and the "open" button that invites the reader to "watch" the $10,000 half court shot.
Hmm, I hope they let Derrick take the shot....he did it against LMU last year, and he could probably use the cash upon graduation in a little over two months.
