It looks to be pretty cool, judging from the descriptions. I looked at the Daktronics sites to see which of their previous installations best matches UP's in screen size (7x9) and video resolution (10mm) and came up with this one

Re: Video Board Installation Starts Today
This is awesome news! This will be a huge improvement to Chiles, as we all know the old scoreboards were crappy and did not give very much information.
I believe I heard that the video screens were the same size as those hanging in Hec Ed @ UW. Not too shabby.
This will open all sorts of opportunities for time-out promotions (i.e. the "Kiss the Girl" routine), advertising, entertainment (highlights from games past, etc), game statistics, replays, a consistent "3-point shot" counter, etc... Not to mention awesome viewing parties in Chiles for other events.
Congrats to the Athletic Department for getting this done in these tough economic times!

Very Cool! I love the idea of instant replay and game stats. One more reason to get excited for the upcoming season.

Make it a pitcher of Pliny the Younger at County Cork and you're on...
( I asked the Publican. If they sold it by the pitcher, which they won't for our own safety, it would be $26.00 )

Does this mean I'm not going to be able to track the thousandths of a second left in a half/game anymore?
Should be a cool addition for UP. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Yay! What will the next upgrades be to the program? Were the cheerleader pom poms still silver last season? I really only saw road games last year. ...If so, I´d prefer that they switch all pom poms to our school colors...

No more "Party in the USA" or "Everybody clap your hands!" either please.PilotNut wrote:Let's not bring up the cheerleaders... I mean dance team....
At least it's not like the Blazers where the noise never stops. Telling fans when to cheer is not "atmosphere," it's an insult to their intelligence.

Funded by....cutting the Men's and Women's Golf programs. RIP UP Golf. Both teams were notified today by Larry, golf on the Bluff will no longer be after the '10 - '11 season. Truly unfortunate.

Incorrect. The video board was funded by the Kentucky, UW, and WSU games, along with future funding from corporate sponsors looking to take advantage of the new video screens. While I'm not refuting any thoughts that cutting the golf programs (unfortunate) may help pay for updated amenities, I have it at good source that the basketball updates are from basketball revenue.

Re: Video Board Installation Starts Today
The upgrades to Chiles Center this year (video boards, scoreboards, shot clocks, new lighting) were NOT funded by cutting any budgets.

So, what does a golf program cost? Some travel $'s and entry fees? No uniforms, equipment or facilities to buy. A few bucks for the driving range?purpleisfierce wrote:Funded by....cutting the Men's and Women's Golf programs. RIP UP Golf. And some scholarships, presumably. While I think it is a shame that UP is dropping the program, there are real costs. UP does report that the athletic programs are self sustaining (as they should be), times are tougher than just a couple years ago. Other programs have cut back. You will note that Lauren Hanson wasn't replaced when she went to Eugene.
The NCAA allows 4.5 for men and 6 for women in D1 for Golf.
Picking a number out of the air like 40k for a scholarship and adding the costs for a coach, travel, health care, greens fees, etc. For the 8 men and 7 women listed in the EADA database, You get somewhere between 600k and a million bucks.
The EADA lists $103,563 as the game day expenses for golf for FY 2008-2009. That doesn't include the salary of the one full time coach listed for the two programs. I'm sure there must be other expenses that don't fall into those categories also. (recruiting trips? Practice travel?).
You can't just dismiss that the program cost money.
