Pilots @ LMU 2/12 3pm PST
Time to move on to the next one, which should be another tough road match... Don't let the Lion's 1-9 WCC record and swirling rumors surrounding the coach confuse you, this is still a very talented team (picked at the top half of the WCC at the beginning of the year) and a team playing for pride is just flat out dangerous. (Especially with the likes of Viney and Teel on the roster) If the multi-OT game in Portland was any indication, this game is completely up for grabs. I think our best chance at winning is encouraging as many 3pt shots from Teel as humanly possible (he's 6.9% on the season...)

I don't want to rehash the past...but....MESA TOLD YOU SO.....I believe that may have been the most interesting coaching job I've seen the coach preform in his short head coaching career, plus a little bad luck, and the Waves incredible home bounces....
I really enjoyed the cinematography that the crew in Malibu gave us in Arizona....I believe one of Spielberg's kids was probably in charge of the fine production.
Onto the future, the good aspect is we all now get to attend another "live" BB game in Vegas...the bad aspect is the players will be good and tired should they win and have to face Mickey's Team or the Zygotes should they be fortunate enough to win in earlier rounds...

Pilots up 36-24 at the half, thanks to great defense. Nem is playing VERY well... LMU is in some foul trouble for the 2nd half.
But I have to admit, the highlight so far is Curt Ranta as Bill Johnson's halftime guest!
Let's continue to play well in the 2nd half, and get the W!

Re: Pilots @ LMU 2/12 3pm PST
Great win to split the weekend.
Not too much strutting, though. The Lions are 1-10 in conference.
If we don't want to play the first night, we still need some help getting SCU into the loss column.

But the way things have been going lately, I'll take the win! I don't know if the importance of the next 2 games can be stressed enough... (Although really, if we want that bye, there aren't any unimportant games...)

Re: Pilots @ LMU 2/12 3pm PST
Pilots Run Away From LMU, 71-48
LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- The Portland Pilots put forth a dominating effort in a 71-48 road win against the Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday afternoon in West Coast Conference action at Gersten Pavilion. Senior forward Luke Sikma picked up his league-leading 12th double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while junior guard Nemanja Mitrovic added 16 points and seven rebounds.
Portland (18-8, 5-5 WCC) earned the season sweep over the Lions (9-17, 1-10) and picked up the largest margin of victory this season. LMU was held to 31 percent shooting from the field for the game and the 48 points allowed was the second lowest total allowed by the Pilots this season. A total of 11 Pilots scored in the ball game.
Sikma, who became Portland’s all-time leader in rebounds on Thursday at Pepperdine, is now three points shy of 1,000 for his career.
LMU led by a 2-0 margin out of the gates, but it was short-lived as Portland quickly took the lead back and never relinquished the lead thereafter. Sikma and Mitrovic scored 11 each in the first half as the Pilots led by as much as 18 points late in the period before Larry Davis made consecutive threes to pull LMU within 36-24 at the half.
The Pilots opened the second half with a 9-1 run to push the margin to 20. The lead would grow to as much as 28 points late in regulation as Portland was able to cycle in lots of players in the closing minutes.
Portland finished the game by shooting 47 percent from the field, although struggled to 4-of-16 shooting from the three-point line. The Pilots gained a 43-34 rebounding advantage and a 32-16 margin in points in the paint.
Portland will return to the Chiles Center for its final two regular season home games next week, including Senior Night on Saturday. The Pilots will host second place San Francisco on Thursday at 6 p.m. in a nationally televised game on ESPNU. Santa Clara will visit on Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff live on CSN Northwest. Ten minutes prior to Saturday’s game will be a Senior Night ceremony recognizing Portland’s four seniors. Tickets are still available for both games through all Ticketmaster outlets or at the door 90 minutes prior to tipoff.

For the week, Douglas and Stohl were 0 for 14 from 3P area, and 4 of 30 overall! Their shooting has got to improve for the Pilots to have any chance of getting victories this week.

Re: Pilots @ LMU 2/12 3pm PST
I have total faith in Rev...Just curious though, I wonder when he was plotting out his season strategy (probably on his smartphone, while texting a recruit) if he envisioned the LMU away game being a blow out and using a 12 man rotation this late in the season...Wow, what a wacky season. Lose to a weak Pepperdine without arguably the best WCC player in their lineup. two days later. blow out one of the teams(without their most versatile player) that in preseason was considered the main challenger to the Zygotes juggernaut grip of conference dominance.Who would have thought at this point in the season the Pilots would be a miserable .500 and USF and Santa Clara would have been anything but conference patsies headed for coaching changes....in retrospect i think St Marys and Mickey are preforming at the expectations in the fall....
That's why I love college basketball, and conference "play in" tourneys..because like some other sport,,,cough,cough...it is extremely exciting when you throw in the variable of 18-22 yr old kids(unless your Gonzaga, or BYU,lol)

It's great to see Sikma (21 points, 13 rebounds) and Mitrovic (16 points, 7 rebounds) have good all-around games. Sikma keeps adding to his UP rebounding record...

Both Stohl and Douglas in severe shooting slump, and as you say we wont last long in the Tournament.
Douglas has improved his assit play with 11 in the two games down south a nd cut down on TOs which was needed

Re: Pilots @ LMU 2/12 3pm PST
I don't see any reasons for pessimism about the WCC tournament. Our guys continue to step up at different times, and Sikma and Mitrovic just finished off very nice road performances. In addition, we only had 12 turnovers in the game against LMU. Gonzaga is still the only team that has beat us twice, and we'll be playing on a neutral court. As long as we don't get a bad draw (like USF or another tough team) in the first round, I like our chances...
There are teams that I'd rather not play in the tourney, but, other teams probably don't want to play us either.

Re: Pilots @ LMU 2/12 3pm PST
Well at this point we would get USD or LMU if we play in the first round, that's pretty much a guarantee. We need to win a few (and have others lose) So we don't have to play that extra game. LMU with Viney scares me, they were rated at the top of the conference at the beginning of the year for a reason (And damn near beat us at home this year)

Re: Pilots @ LMU 2/12 3pm PST
Yeah, but WITH him they nearly beat us. And we haven't exactly shown consistency outside of the friendly confines of the CC.
Then again I think a literal mutiny could happen any time against Max Goode ( I've been reading too many Jack Aubrey books...)
Why oh why couldn't we have split that Bay Area trip? Tied for 3rd sounds way better than stuck in 5th....

Well, the season isn't over yet, and I like our chances of finishing 3-1. I don't think we'll lose anymore home games this season. If we finish at 8-6 in the WCC instead of at .500, that might change things a little bit. We've just got to suck it up, and face the fact that we'll probably face tough competition in the first round. But, there's nothing to be scared of. We should just enjoy this season for as long as it lasts and know that we have some great athleticism (in K. Bailey and others) coming to campus in the future years. And we're going to need it when Viney is a senior (and likely healthier) and BYU comes into the league...

Oh I didn't say it was over, I was just saying that facing USF in the first round won't happen based on current records and likely outcomes. And also that LMU scares me more than USD.
I think our team has a shot at making a little run, but we will need SOME production from the back court. Nem and Luke can't beat the better teams by themselves.

Re: Pilots @ LMU 2/12 3pm PST
There is still a lot of hoops to be played... but if we finish 3-1 with the loss @SMC (so our WCC record would be 8-6), we should be looking good for a 4th seed... SCU, currently in 4th, is 6-4, and if we beat them and GU beats them, even if they win @LMU & @Pepp, they also finish 8-6.
Based upon the WCC seeding tiebreaker scenarios, we would get the higher seed based upon our win over SMC... I think we can still get #4 seed if we go 2-2 (as long as we beat SCU), and SCU goes 1-3.
Heck, if we go 4-0, we still have a shot at #3 seed, if USF goes 1-3.
Both USF and SCU have to come to the NW and also have home games vs. Pepp & LMU. Pepperdine is proving to be no slouch...
Now that I look at it, the #2 seed is still mathematically possible...
