Prospects Fading
I have no inside knowledge of recruiting, nor do I access Twitter to learn about recent recruiting efforts. What I do know is that in past years during the spring signing period we have almost always announced players and their signing by this point, more than two weeks after signing day. Last April we announced signed palyers shortly after the signing period began.
The delay does not certainly but probably suggests that some of our efforts have been unsuccessful. No JC center recruit has suggested interest in the program that I know of.
I agree that we appear to need another big, but wonder now whether it is better to wait for a year to use the scholarship because the 2011 eligible talent available to the Pilots is not good enough to help the team.

Don't be such a gloomy Gus.
since you don't have a twitter account...
Air Europa has the Canary Islands as the first route that pops up on Google.
and I'll throw in a Facebook account (Canarias Basketball Academy)

It might be bit early to give up yet.

Great meeting with prospects parents. Very good discussion on how college is about opening doors on and off the court. And proper "fit".

Let me just say I need to lose some weight before I fly Air Europa again. Problem is I am not sure that will happen by tomorrow.

Rob Kennedy Hey I ran into Eric Reveno, the Head Coach at Portland, out at the Final 4 and he said he just came back from seeing you. He is a really good guy and a terrific coach. I have gotten to know him well over the past few years and I think the world of him.

Re: Prospects Fading
Gus here--thank you for the update. I am obviously anxious to learn what basketball souvenirs may end up in Portland with our globe trotting coach. If what you suggest is true, then Reveno is continuing the improvement of the program in ways that were hard to imagine prior to his taking over.
The bigs in the videos on the Facebook page look promising--let's see if one appears in an article on the website.
Go Pilots!

That's your trouble. Always hoping for that otherworldly recruit.
Have a sense of reality, will you? We'll never get someone like that.

Why did you just KNOW they were going to include this piece of bio.
God's Gift (20) is the third of six children born to Eunice and Donatus Achiuwa of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He has one older brother, Promise, and two younger brothers, God's Will and Precious. He also has one older sister, Grace, and one younger sister, Peace.

It was bound to happen that God's Gift would end up with Saint something or another. It could have been St Marys and then where would we be !

Re: Prospects Fading
Must a player now sign a grant in aid with the school? Has the time to sign an LOI passed? The effect of signing the grant or whatever it is, is that while it is binding on the school, the player is not bound and can change his mind, however unlikely that may be.
The delay might have something to do with clearing the young man academically, particularly if he is a foreign student, with classes on different subjects with titles in spanish, dutch, mandarin? I find it hard to imagine the actual form taking that long to execute and deliver . . .
Let's hope whomever this young man he can contribute immediately.
Go Pilots.

Re: Prospects Fading
The signing period ends May 18 for Basketball - August 1 for most other sports.
Once a player signs, both school and player have a one year obligation. In addition, a player must sit a year if he chooses to transfer unless the school grants a waiver.
http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/nli/NLI/Home/
In basketball, it is a full scholarship. They don't split the money between players like soccer.
Non athletic grants are in addition to, but not limited by, athletic money. It still can't be more than the value of an education.
The player must go through the regular admissions committees to be approved for admission, and yes, that takes a while until the committee meets. In addition, the NCAA must approve the student's academics before a freshman can step on the court.
All these are formalities, but they take time. The NCAA is particularly slow with foreign students. Even with home grown kids, sometimes a soccer player has had to sit for the first couple games while they handed down a ruling. They will announce before NCAA results, however, if they are confident on the academics.
Many European programs take a year or more longer than USA schooling, so the kid will probably be older.
If he's from Spain like we think, he will come with a Bachillerato degree, which normally two to three years beyond age 16 (so, 18 or 19) If he went to academy, he will be older yet.

Re: Prospects Fading
Let's hope that in addition to being able to write he can shoot, block shots, fight for rebounds and fend off the skepticism of some fans about his ability to contribute. Whether heroic or not, it would be nice to see an upgrade at the center position and across the front line. This will be a tough conference next year.
