Ex Santa Clara and fellow Rush star ( and Boston Breaker ) Jordan Agnelli does the interview.

I've actually been expecting it and made a few discreet references to it last year about someone leaving the team, but the reason I had doesn't make sense now, since she has enrolled at BYU, which has the same high standards as Portland. Maybe BYU was willing to bend a little???

Charney, Eleanor, Molly, Mallory, a verbal commit, and now Cloee….
Six players transferring or quitting in two years. Leaving UP a roster of 17 players for 2012.

A pretty manufactured list as far as this years roster is concerned.
Charney has no more eligibility anywhere. You might as well have included Kim Engesser from 1997. She left for playing time. How much did she play last year?
Eleanor left for a scholarship. At the time UP was pretty flush.
Molly was hurt, couldn't get back into shape without relapses, and decided to concentrate on engineering studies ( AFAIK, she is still at Portland)
A verball commit? Bit of a stretch. Verbals change their mind all the time. We had one change two weeks before signing day two years ago to Portland. She is on the u20s concacaf qualifying roster as we speak.
That leaves Mallory, who I have no recollection of..... Possibly you mean Molloy. She is not on the roster for legitimate reasons. I'm not sure she is still at Portland.
We went to a national championship finals with 17 and went four overtimes. We won our first National championship with a team that has 18 in the group photo. On both of those teams, players left, were suspended, or were dropped from the roster.
Small rosters on UP teams is nothing new. One thing for sure- playing time won't be much of an issue.

Re: Dani drafted
...the difference is Cloee was unquestionably the best player on the team! One of the Team Captains. That's a kick in the gut for me! She was my favorite. Aside from her obvious soccer skills...she was a lunch pail type who always brought it! She's a really really really ultra-competitive player.... always brought heart and intensity to the pitch. And, without a doubt, her leadership carried the team through the tough times last season. Gosh...I enjoyed watching her play.
But, you could tell the season was frustrating her. At the end of a couple of games we lost...she broke down and cried. Something wore her down? I thought she always was a classy player. There must be some internal strife on the team that she just could not bear anymore.
Will miss you Cloee!

Re: Dani drafted
I got the impression that Cloee's frustration last season had more to do with her physical problems. Her physical issues kept her from playing her best for much of her career at UP. She spent many practices her whole career not working out with the team, but with the trainer and coaches on her specific problems. Not being able to give 100% to your team can be an extremely difficult situation to face especially for players of her caliber.
Why did she leave? We don't know and the people who do know don't seem to be sharing that information with us which is their prerogative (and pretty normal). Maybe she didn't think the training methods at UP were best for her, maybe she wanted to be closer to home, maybe she missed her high school sweetheart or maybe she didn't like winter in Portland. We can speculate here until the cows come home, which is what we tend to do. And some folks will see the sky as falling, but I for one am not quite ready just yet to write off the program. It has been consistently competitive and I believe it will continue to be one the outstanding programs in the country going forward.

Re: Dani drafted
When I initially heard this (around February 1 ), I did not see any pieces dropping from the firmament...but she was really, really good and we will miss her. The biggest loss, if the attitude was positive, is that the new defender recruits won't get to spend time in the backline with Cloee.

Re: Dani drafted
Here is an article on Dani's Rush team website with an interview.
She mentions that some players hung up their boots when the WPS folded. That happened also when the WUSA folded, and is a step backwards for women's soccer in the USA.
