NCAA 3rd Round vs Tennessee - 11/24
Not showing any signs of a turkey coma, UP is up 2-0 early in the first half. Wooo-hoooo! Please someone tell me they are Tivo/DVRing this game?

Enyeart's second goal makes it 3-0.
After a long day of holiday travel I didn't think I'd be alert enough to listen to the game tonight, but the Pilots kept it pretty interesting all night. 28 shots!

game
Just back from the game. Wow, the seats in section I were awesome. By far the best view we've had at Merlot. We sat in row C and it felt like you were on the field! The pilots were fun to watch tonight, especially the first half when they ran circles around the Lady Vols. Thanks again for the ticket advice guys.

Hey PilotDrummer, did you take any pics of the game? And thanks for the ticket to the men's game last week--That's a good seat you have.

No, didn't bring the camera tonight (and regretted it immediately). It was chilly and probably would have been tough to operate the controls...should have. Those first two goals were right there in front of me.
It's it's great seat, indeed.

wooooooooooooooo weeeeeeeeeeee!!!!
was at the game an am now watching it again on my dvr. the girls looked an played great all the way around. i was thoroughly impressed w/the vol's keeper. if she is not on the national team watch list she should be!! w/out her, the score very easily could have been 5-7/0. she was fantastic!!
watching the game now on the dvr, the commentators mentioned that the vol's coach is angela kelly [not sure if that is her married or maiden name], but she played at unc. they said that she spent a summer in portland playing summer soccer. an she has modeled her program after portland's, because, 'clive did it right'. a former unc player modeling her program after clive an not anson? what does that say?

Angela Kelly (her maiden name) played in the adidas Summer League for a year in 1997, I think.
I just got home, but I will put the goals and some highlights on YouTube in the a.m.
It was a good night to be a Pilot.

Re: NCAA 3rd Round vs Tennessee - 11/24
This was certainly a dominating performance in the first half. The rate at which we were putting shots on goal--whew. Good to see Tennessee acquit themselves in the second half with some truly dangerous chances, more possession on the offensive side of the field.
Amid the celebration I think we had some trouble finishing . . .I thought one of our players flat out missed an open goal from point blank in the second half.
Enyeart is dangerous . . .she is as good a striker I have seen this side of Megan Rapinoe and Sinclair . . .she continues to impress.
Hats off to what I thought was the best effort yet from Elli Reed. She played a tremendous game. Created chances the entire game. It may be only my impression but she truly seemed to be present on both sides of the pitch the entire game--defending time and again and running the length of the field to do so. She and Budge may be taking the same vitamins.
Jessica Tsao is truly playing well. Tsao is shutting down her side of the field, coming forward with speedy dangerous runs and skillful passing. I think it is only a matter of time before she puts one in.
For that matter the defense was impressive. Kelli and Emily were there usual steady selves . . .
Nice in goal performace by Kelsey.
Thanks again to the seniors for their marvelous four years of soccer. Enjiyed watching you.
Go Pilots. Beat UCLA!

I was impressed with how well Wozzie played on the defensive side of the ball.
Ultimately, Portland is really playing great team defense.

Yes. Hats of to Tennessee. By the second half, I've seen many defenses wither to the immense pressures of Pilot ball movement and attacks. But, with the exception of Enyeart's early 2nd goal....the Vols adjusted and countered in the last half. I thought they were a quality team. They continued fighting through the rest of the game. I did not sense that they ever waved the white flag mentally. That's a sign of a well coached team.

Re: NCAA 3rd Round vs Tennessee - 11/24
The Vols keeper was impressive on her ability to stop shots, but before we elevate her to the national team there are a couple of things to consider. First her kicking ability was very suspect. Most of her kicks were low line drives that never made it to midfield. Second did you see the save Kelsey made on that corner kick? She showed an amazingly quick reaction. Since she's never had to save as many shots as the Tennessee keeper - and hopefully never will as a Pilot - we really have no idea how she would fare in that situation. Based on that one play though, it looks to me like she could give the Vol keep a run for her money.

I'm not so sure the Vols didn't mentally wave that white flag. At about the midway point of the second half, it really looked to me like the fight had been taken out of them. Portland also looked like they had taken their foot off the gas a bit.

Re: NCAA 3rd Round vs Tennessee - 11/24
Yes, Hats off to Tennessee. They showed more spunk than anybody I've seen at Merlo with the exception of Santa Clara. Their keeper was the best opposing keeper I've seen - always well positioned, great reflexes, made good decisions, and was fearless.
I was talking to a Tennessee supporter at half-time (possibly the Keeper's dad) and he also said that they are trying to Play UP ball. He commented how much fun it was to watch the game, even from the other side. Then he looked around and asked- "is it like this at all the games?" when I explained that this happened 4 or 5 times a year and the rest of the games were well attended, too, he looked around, smiled, and said- " This is great, even coming in here as the opponent. It should be like this everywhere".
Tennessee might get there in a few years. They have a new Stadium, the program is well funded, and their attendance has been slowly increasing. and if they are using Clive as a model, how could they go wrong?

Re: NCAA 3rd Round vs Tennessee - 11/24
Agreed all around with what people are saying. I too was really impressed with how Tennessee didn't give up and kept on attacking all the way to the end. You could tell that UP was just content to sit on the lead and ride it out until the final whistle, but Tennessee didn't have any quit in them and took control of the game for much of the second half.
But that first half was probably the most exciting half of UP soccer I have ever seen. Talk about relentless... the Pilots just did not take the foot off the gas for one second the whole time. And how about Sophie Schmidt? Terrific game by her, as well as Enyeart and Reed. I also thought Budge played great too - UP really did a great job of spreading out the field and taking advantage of their talented wing players and defensive backs coming up to attack.
Anyway... I also was impressed with Jaimel Johnson (UT's keeper) but I agree that some of her kicks were weak - both Enyeart and Schmidt nearly scored off of poor/short goal kicks. Still, she was the only reason this game wasn't 6-0 or 7-0. I think she's got a future for sure. I also heard that she had over 30 family/friends travel to Portland for the game - pretty cool!
Now it's revenge time against the Bruins!

Goals up on YouTube.
Here is the YouTube link to the goals from last night. It is about 6 minutes long (I let the clip run between the first and second goals). When I get a little time, I'll put together something a little better with shorter clips and highlights on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball (including Kelsey's brilliant save).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvlMuxiJg2s
I haven't watched the entire game, just searched and clipped the goals, but what irritated me about the broadcast, is that despite having "local" announcers doing the play-by-play (and Jimmy Clarke is certainly well known around the program), they both failed to correctly identify the 2 of 3 the goal scorers at the time of the goals: on Enyeart's first she was mistaken for Schmidt (and how about an infuriating time for a replay), and on her second she was mistaken for Budge. After the first goal, you can hear the PA announcer clearly credit the goal to Enyeart, yet they continue to go on about Sophie without correcting themselves. The announcers in Colorado knew our players better than our local announcers did, which seems kind of sad to me.

Maybe she tweaked a muscle or something. Before the game, a couple guys who watched her practice said she was booming them well past midfield.
