2012 Olympic Games
Thought I'd start an Olympic Games thread here so we could comment over the next few weeks without being sport specific. (There’s already a women’s soccer Olympics thread).
I’ll start out by asking those who may have an opinion……..the 1992 men’s basketball team was the “Dream Team,” is the 2012 team just dreaming?

Did their shorts not come in time for the team picture?
And does Mike Krzyzewski age?

Speaking of which, I've never been a big fan of the super long shorts the kids are wearing today, but thank god we don't still have the short shorts!

The "coach K as Dorian Grey" issue is a little creepy....
Are there no centers in the NBA anymore?

Tyson Chandler is the only true center on this team. But, they are all big guys nowadays.

Big Roy Hibbert fan, eh? Haha it seems the problem is all the decent centers are either injured, not US nationals, or are free agents not wanting to risk injury...

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
Hey let's start an Olympic thread and talk about the one sport no one seems to care about.
I'll skip the basketball and watch swimming, gymnastics, track and field, cycling, shooting, curling (or is it lawn bowling in the summer), et. al.

There is no curling or lawn bowling, but field hockey is an Olympic sport.
You first.

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
Can't wait to see how not-awesome they make Olympic prime time coverage this time around. I'm ready for a steady dose of swimming, gymnastics, Bob Costas being bland, Cris Collinsworth pissing me off, and that one manly woman scaring me.
Thankfully I've got DVR.

Speaking of which, I don't play NBC's game. I look up the results and talk about them in real time.
This is to say, this thread will almost definitely contain spoilers.

Yea, I don't see how Wilt was able to have sex with 200 women, let alone the reported 20,000 after wearing these snug shorts.blacksheep wrote:DaTruRochin wrote:Did their shorts not come in time for the team picture?

Lochte vs. Phelps, who ya got? I think they are head to head in just 2 events. Lochte in the 400im and Phelps in the 200im. Or is it Phelps in the 4 and Lochte in the 2? Either way, we all win as Americans! Can't wait.

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
I feel like the theme of this Olympics has been bashing NBC's coverage... So why not add more fuel to the fire?
http://deadspin.com/5931689/nbc-sportss-broadcast-of-olympic-soccer-cuts-to-commercial-right-before-a-critical-goal
Maybe the NCAA is on to something with those commercial breaks during championship matches?
But seriously, check out some of the Deadspin breakdowns of NBCs follies... Not including moving pieces, manufacturing drama by not including full competitions, only showing US squads and puff pieces.... Now missing big goals in soccer matches for commercials? Whats next? Telling me the modern pentathalon guns are now effectively more precise Nintendo Zappers for duck hunt? Oh wait...

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
I think Her Majesty QE II would say, "Much ado about nothing" regarding the break from the Japan/Brazil match. Someone has to pay the expense of the webcast/broadcast, and face it; a Supersix-5 on sale for $1,799 IS a great deal!
I think Deadspin needs to take a deep breath, and consider how poor coverage of the Olympics once was compared today's version. I've only watched coverage of swimming and US and Canada soccer, but so far I've seen plenty of action w/o commercial break-ins on action, and I've also seen a lot of "foreigners" performing........not just US athletes. I’m as jingoistic as anyone, so maybe I have missed a few athletes from other countries and just haven’t cared.
Suck it up…….you are seeing much better coverage than the rest of the world!

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
Well, that is unless you live in Canada or the UK... CBC and the BBCs coverage is both far superior and less filtered than NBC.
Plus they don't have to watch awful interviews by Ryan Seacrest. (Who let him out of his job talking to reality stars and wannabe record company stooges?)

Gabby, Gabby!
Um, I gotta say, I don't normally watch gymnastics, but I just saw some of the competition in the "all-around" on my DVR...
WOW........GABBY DOUGLAS.......WOW!
I predict her influence on little girls in America today will pay off in a big way tomorrow.

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
This isn't even the first time they've done that. I'm so glad the online streams and replays have either no announcers at all (the silence is refreshing), or balanced thoughtful commentary that doesn't sensationalize or hype up whatever storyline NBC is pushing. This is, of course, because NBC has nothing to do with actually producing the feeds. They just cut them up and add in their announcers.
To DTR's point, CBC's coverage of Vancouver 2010 was far better according to people I know who were able to watch it (and their website was easier to understand).

All whining aside, having an african american snag the women's gold and a son of cuban immigrants the bronze on the men's side is encouraging in so many ways.

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
Yea, that could be; I have no idea who Ryan Seacrest is, nor have I seen him on any broadcasts. It could be all that money I pay Comcast for two DVRs is actually worth it........I just see the competition.DaTruRochin wrote:Well, that is unless you live in Canada or the UK... Lived in Canada for a year, and in the UK for eight.....glad to hear they are broadcasting more than darts and curling now, but I have to admit, I was hooked on those two sports, and cricket too!

I hope what Kayla Harrison did in judo that same day might inspire young women as well. Amazing athlete.

Re: 2012 Olympic Games
OK, point taken, but I think I'll still just let my DVR do all MY filtering. If I see something other than competition happening.......I just keep fast forwarding.PurplePrideTrumpet wrote:This isn't even the first time they've done that. Oh, and I've found the mute button very effective on more than one occasion....and not just during the Olympics!

I would be remiss if I didn't mention Carmelita Jeter posted the fastest time of the round in 100 qualifying today. The semifinals and final are tomorrow.
